Eliminate Transfer Fee, Allow Guesting NA/EU
I agree that guesting is pretty useless now, but free world transfers would create chaos for WvW. The short-term free transfers they did pre-season 2 to certain servers were bad enough.

No they shouldn’t. People bandwagon easily enough as it is.
UH, so how about people all stack to T1 and leave all other servers empty?

It’s not going to create any more chaos than there was at the beginning of the game. I’m suggesting that they eliminate the transfer fees AFTER the spring tournament is over or setup some new WvW system.
UH, so how about people all stack to T1 and leave all other servers empty?
We know the reason why people don’t do that… because of “queues” and because servers are listed as “Full”. But with Megaservers, how exactly is one server more full than another?

Remember, gem fees for world transfers only started when guesting was rolled out. Now that guesting is useless because of Megaservers, why do we need to pay gem fees for world transfers exactly?

With the mega-server system, the only reason you desperately want to transfer would be of WvW reasons. I actually like how it is now. It’s been made hard to abandon your server and bandwagon. The 2-week lockout also helps prevents servers buying guilds and what not. For PvE players, I don’t think server transfers matter that much

Actually, the problem of “servers buying guilds” started because of paid transfers (along with guesting). Why would anyone see the need to “buy a guild” if all transfers were free as they were during the initial rollout of the game.

Now servers can’t buy effectively any more because of the 2-week lockout. I wish this stays even after the tournament. They can make transfers free, but there should be another sort of penalty for leaving your server, and the lockout does it quite fine.

Great idea, free transfers along with 2-week lockout. Sounds reasonable.
They can’t guest between NA and EU servers for technical reasons. The account information is stored in one of 2 places, the EU server side or the NA server side. Because the 2 sets of servers are separate, there can’t be guesting between them.
The guesting is still being used, even though there are no servers. I know this isn’t intuitive but some people have tested it. Guesting to different servers places you on different maps. The server that’s your home server (or the server you’re guesting to) is part of the formula that determines where the game places you.

But they can easily do account transfer from NA to EU and vice versa because we saw this at the start of the game.

And this can take up to 30 minutes. I’m not sure how many people would be willing to wait half an hour to guest to another server. Besides being, most likely, cost-ineffective.

30 min? No, whenever I did a server transfer it was near-instantaneous. The client closes and you log back in and you’re on the other server.
For some, it may be relatively quick (5 minutes or so), for others, not so much.
‘To transfer to a different world, go to the character selection screen (using F12 or when you first logon) and select the desired world; you will be logged out while the game makes these changes, which might take 5-30 minutes. You can transfer once every seven days at a cost determined by the destination server population.’

You sound a person that’s never actually done a server transfer yourself. So please, unless you have first-hand experience that a server transfer actually took 30 minutes, do not copy and paste the company’s caution messages which don’t actually reflect reality.
The server transfer is done in the blink of an eye and it certainly does not take 30 minutes or even 5 minutes. Click transfer, log off, log back on, done. That is what I and hundreds of other players have experienced.
Well, first, it isn’t ‘company caution message’. Obviously, you know nothing about the wiki. Second, if you spent a goodly amount of time on the forums in some of the pertinent sub-forums, you would have read all the disparate times it can take.
But, it is gratifying to know you have hundreds of friends in-game. Thanks for the information. =)

Have you ever expected an email to arrive, only to have to wait several minutes or hours? Transferring cross region has the same problem. Your account data is locked, queued and then transferred to the other region’s data center. This transfer could be instant, but if enough people do it at the same time or the network is busy for other reasons, it won’t be.

Uh, actually, for some people 30 minutes would be fast.
My boyfriend had to go through support to get his account fully transferred when we both transferred a few months ago. He couldn’t access it while the transfer was going on, and it took an hour or two to get it sorted, which had to be done manually.
There’s “personal experience” for you. I know it’s happened to other people as well.

I could transfer my account from EU to NA and back right now by paying for it, so it not being possible is simply untrue, they’d just need to make it free.

I know it’s not obvious just from playing the game, but guesting and transferring are two different processes.
When you guest to a server it’s like you’re playing on a LAN or accessing a file on a networked PC. All your account information is still saved on your home server, but it’s made accessible to the server you’re guesting on. That’s possible because the two are in the same location and physically connected.
But the different server clusters are in different locations, different continents even. (If I remember correctly the EU ones are in Germany and the NA ones are in Washington State.) So transferring an account means copying and moving your account data from one server cluster to another. Like emailing a file to someone else so they can use it.
It might be possible to enable guesting between the two but it would be prone to a lot of lag because they’d have to connect via the internet and if more than a few people did it then it would place a lot of strain on the servers, on top of everything they’re doing now.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
No and No.Server Fee is needed or we will have the same WvW problem as at the start.

O please I use the wiki and oftentimes it has inaccuracies for example the one you copy and pasted. And no I’d rather not spend a whole lot of time reading about one-off server transfer glitches on the forum. In the vast majority of cases 99%+, the transfers are done immediately.
And back to the main topic now, the transfers should be free.
in fact, transfer fees are more justified now than they ever were.
The only problem I have with the way things are right now has to do with the fact that Guild upgrades are server-specific. This seems rather pointless given the shift to megaservers, honestly, but that’s just my opinion.

That’s splendid! Then, you knew for a fact is was not a ‘company caution message’. I guess that was just something for your argument. I am pleased we are in agreement. =)

No, you were stretching it making it seem as if server transfers were more of a hassle than they actually are. We know this is not the case because in the early days you could transfer multiple times per hour to do things like WvW map completion.
I don’t know how many people transferred multiple times across regions in an hour. Perhaps, in the ‘early’ days, there were different circumstances. I really don’t have those metrics. I’m not sure how I was ‘stretching’ anything by quoting the wiki, or relaying what people have sought help for on the forums. I certainly didn’t claim everyone or 99% of the playerbase didn’t have a less-than-two-minute transfer experience.
Regardless, not everyone has a lightning fast transfer; I am pleased that you do. Since you have such a compelling argument for guesting and free transfers trans-region, I am certain ArenaNet will consider your suggestion with all the gravity and weight it deserves. Again, good luck. =)

If anything, server transfers are too easy as it is. I think they should have a one-month lock-out except for allowing you to go back to your original server (one time) in case you made a mistake and don’t like the new server.
As for NA/EU Guesting/Transfers, I recall reading that they were unifying the datacenters for the China release, but it was a work in progress.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.
/i’m a lesbiab… lesbiam… less bien… GIRLS/
I’m hoping to get back to EU servers since the megaservers really ruined the purpose of me staying in TC. But I’m not paying 2400 gems just to go back to my old server just for a 50% chance I’ll enjoy it more. Transfer costs should not exceed well over £20, it’s ridiculous.
It seems clear that ArenaNet WILL adjust their pricing scheme for world transfers because it would be utter nonsense to go back to their old pricing scheme of “Very High, High, Medium, and Low” population servers when now everyone is a part of the megaserver(s) (minus the NA/EU split).
Currently the pricing scheme is based on WvW rank positions in gold, silver, and bronze leagues and they are charging a massive amount of gems to servers that were higher ranked in their leagues at the start of the tournament.
We know after the tournament, they will need to come up with a new pricing scheme or possibly revert to the old scheme (even though it makes little sense with megaserver structure) or they could be nice and eliminate transfer fees entirely.
It might be wishful thinking for them to do so but hey they eliminated armor repair and trait reset fees (with the tradeoff of reduced silver income in events bleh, increase guild startup costs, super pricy trait unlocking costs, etc.).
So something is going to change with world transfer costs or the world transfer system, and they already have something in the works before I made this suggestion. This is why in their blog post about megaserver they had that tidbit about the effect on WvW.
I think for the next/last 5 weeks of the spring tournament things will stay the same. and then we may see some big changes with world transfers afterwards.
one final thing to consider is the mistforged hero weapons and how they planned to have several WvW tournaments so that players could earn enough tickets to forge one over the course of 2 or more tournaments. This suggests that server identities may remain intact at least for WvW.
And please make the guild chapters unified asap.
If you really want to transfer to one of the winning WvW servers, just pay the Gem costs like the rest of the players.
I really wouldn’t mind being able to guest to NA/EU for content it be fun to meet new people. also the PVP meta is different there so if I could guest and do pvp I feel I learn some new things about the game. Since EU tends to be more tanky and NA is sort of random in terms of builds.
If megaservers made paying for a transfer obsolete, then I argue that it made transferring obsolete as well.
Eliminate transfers. In fact revert transfers for the last, oh, 6 months, and get rid of the bandwagon problem.
Say NO to transfers!

But if you do that, how will JQ be able to compete with an ever expanding BG?

I’m already on a winning server thank you. This suggestion is for transfers done after the tournament not during the tournament.
