Allow base professions to have access to the elite spec heal, utilities, elite and weapon. New profession mechanics (reaper’s shroud/primal burst etc.) would still be locked behind the elite spec.

Each profession would still need to unlock each skill via the current method and players would still need HoT to do so.

This would encourage build diversity while still allowing Elite specs to have an edge.
Any thoughts?

I’m not really for this, because new set of skill (including weapon), is supposed to belong to the elite flavour, so it sounds more like an awkward suggestion.

Anyway, on that matter, I also have a suggestion : make vanilla an elite spec. In the very beginning, each trait was linked to a stat. Each trait but one ! One that was “stat specific profession”. For example, mesmer had illusions, ele had arcana, guardian had virtues etc.

So my suggestion is to revamp those trait lines, buff them and flavor them more, and make them work as an elite spec : only third line, so impossible to have them with current elite specs.

In the same way as weapons and utilities are linked to certain traitlines (necro dagger/wells to blood magic) yet you do not need to run said traitline whilst using them.

Your idea for making said lines into elite specs would only restrict current builds even further (I know every wvw thief would be livid over having to pick Trickery or Daredevil). My idea allows for more builds.

It probably does theoretically. Now, if I think deeper about your thieves friends turning livid because they’d have to chose, I’d rather see things that way : having to choose would strongly refrain the power creep. As choices would have te be made, there wouldn’t be an obvious good choice with synergies which would eventually turn into the build every thief (for your example) runs. Instead, it may allow other builds to rise and shine. Anyway, we’re getting to far from original topic.

I understand better your idea now. I’ve got mixed feeling about it, yet I still can’t really understand why.

For the weapon I agree that there should be no lock on the elite spec, because the weapon that elite specs have generally little relevance with the theme of the class. It’s going to be silly in a few expansions where warriors get scepter and it’s actually better than the elementalist scepter because it comes as part of an elite spec, and then elementalist has a better greatsword or shield than warrior for the same reason.

I want to eventually get scepter or pistol on my warrior. (I mean why not?) But I don’t want those to ever be the focus of any warrior elite specs because those will always be out of theme on the warrior class.

Other parts of an elite specs, like the skills and mechanics. No, those are part of the flavour of the elite spec so keep them locked to the elite.

Agree with this one. Basically make taking the current specialization a trade-off. Do you want Daredevil OR trickery ? with some slight buffs to the relevant “core-spez” they could be made to be on par with (or at least closer to) the hot-spez.

For Guardian for example, Either Dragonhunter OR Virtues (our strongest support line), though a good point could be made for replacing that with Valor instead, since it might be our strongest trait all over. Make them have to sacrifice something, instead of getting everything at the same time, that is how you create build diversity.

I must admit though, I really miss being able to level new toons with the new weapons. I tend to learn new builds by making a new character and trying things out (example made a new thief to try critical arts + acrobatics, and wanted to use staff to learn it at the same time, but can’t).

But I guess I can see why they designed it as they did, doesn’t mean I have to like it

PFF!! HAHAHAHA! Funny!
Engies would be almost the same as Scrappers, only without the gimmicky Function Gyro. En PvE there would be exactly 0 difference between them.

Really, too funny.
