The whole point of elite specs is to change the way you play a profession. That includes the weapons.

Not to mention, most of the weapons and their skills are affected by their associated traits. They’re connected. It’s how it is.

It’d be nice to have the new weapons added to baseline.

I post from a phone so please excuse any references to ducks or any other auto corrections.

I agree with this, though as a business, the weapon being available should be tied to the expansion the related elite spec is tied to.
So require owning HoT to have access to that elite and weapon, but the weapon doesn’t require the elite spec to use said weapon.

Ya the weapons really are not as tied to the elite spec as people claim as a defense for keeping them the way they are.

I made a post suggesting unlinking and that’s the level of debate I got back lol.

“But but but the -20% weapon trait is in the elite spec traitline!”
Yes and the core weapons’ -20% cdr does not forcibly dictate which traitlines people choose now, so…

After the Elite utility skill, there should be another 25-point unlock that gives you the ability to use the weapon even when not using that elite spec.

Or just make the specialization weapon unlock for the character as soon as the character fully unlocks that elite spec.

Yes, in many cases, without traits those weapons won’t be as effective. This is hardly a problem – as someone mentioned already, using core weapons without having their corresponding traits is not that rare occurence.

Actions, not words.

No, keep weapons tied to their respective specs. You have to make hard choices, that’s the point.

nothing should be locked behind the trait.
neither skills, weapons or mechanics… it forces very limited build choices and handicaps the class balancing overall

As AstralPoring, and others, have pointed out using incompatible weapons/traitlines would make for ineffective play – isn’t that a hard choice a player should be free to make?
Restricting this only makes for easier choices, not harder.

I’ve raised that point a while ago and people made an interesting remark about this.
Each specialization is tied to a new weapon for the profession. But there will be a time when professions will have access to every weapon types available. At this point Anet won’t be able to assign a new weapon to the next generation elit spec if those weapons become baseline [without developping entire new types of weapons which would amount to a kittenload of work].

By tying weapons to elite specs, they’ll be able to add new specialization which will use existing weaponsets in an entirely different manner. For example, there could be a new Thief elite specialization which would use range/magic staff, or with different dagger attacks, etc.

Hmm.. true. But wouldn’t that cause a kitten load of confusion? I don’t mean for players playing the spec and remembering which daggers variation they’re playing – that’ll come with practice. But for others seening a dagger theif.. they wouldn’t be able to tell which dagger specialisation he’s using. And does that even matter? (:o

Time and time again Anet has proven they care about viewership above all else even after the fall of esports. They still defend trench coats for medium because of a rodlike and that profile is so people watching can identify. It’s also why they limit the amount of skills. To double dip is to confuse the pvp watcher. Also it’s unlikely this game will last for that many expac said in the first place.
