Why are people constantly saying that elitism is a problem. Yes there are kitten and there are elitists. Sometimes people are both. But what is wrong with trying to do things in a fast timely manner? Nothing.

I was recently in an Arah run where I was minding my own business and not trying to call people out. One of the people in the party started telling about how he recently soloed Lupicys and asked me why i had not, telling me that i was a good player and i could. Now for me there is no reason to try soloing Lupicus anymore as it has been done by so many people there is no prestige in doing it. I explained this to him and said that I’m happy with my guilds record speed kill of Lupicus. I then proceeded to talk about his video because i had watched it and made a couple comments and gave him a pointer about his gear. He welcomed this advice but strangely enough another person in the party did not. They started talking about how full zerker gear is bad and telling me i’m wrong, started insulting me cause i died once in the run, telling me that my guild is kitten ect… Now this obviously didn’t make me happy and I was arguing with this person. And, yes when I argue with someone I will usually leave you kitten ed off. So you can say I’m an kitten if you want for defending myself and my guild, but i do not believe I did anything wrong. So this person was calling me a douchy elitist. This is where i fail to see whats wrong with being an elitist. I came into your group. Ran your way. Didn’t start talking until I was asked a question, then get called a kitten elitist. Nothing That happened in this run was elitist at all. Nor does defending my self and my guild constitute me as a kitten / kitten hole. Where the arguments came from is this self righteous person thinking they know everything and insulting me for no reason because i try to use to best gear and set up I can to quickly clear content. This is what should be frowned upon, not elitism. Elitism is simply trying to do things the best way possible, being an elitist does not make you an kitten. Being an kitten does.

Well, You could just have discontinued the argument and be the better man. They have their ways, you have yours. You think zerker is the way to go – they don’t think it is. Agree to disagree.

I personally would not mind what the other player is using (yes, I don’t mind if he has MF gear) as long as he’s not a burden to the run.

And by burden I don’t mean he has the lowest damage – I mean he dies tons and if new to the run, doesn’t listen.

You were probably a placeholder for some other negative experience this player had. I’d just brush it off. There’s nothing wrong with having skill and opinions about what constitutes the most efficient method for beating in-game content. In those cases, I just stop the argument and ignore the person. It takes someone rather insecure or petty to act the way he/she did, and no argument is going to end well when they perceive you as representative of some serious flaw in the game or negative personal experience.

Being an elitist has very little to do with the actual skill involved. It has more to do with the attitude of a person, even tho it’s someone who plays the game pretty well.

This was obviously just some little kitty-cat trying ta get under your skin because he was all P’ed off. Doesn’t sound like anything here was a problem on your part.

The problem people have with elitists is when they come in and start telling other people how to play their characters, and what they should be wearing and how they should be just like the l33t-o in everything; or when they won’t play with someone ‘cause they’re not l337 enough.

Doesn’t sound like that was the problem here; sounds like this guy wanted to be U6639 L337 (I’m must making up numbers for letters here ‘cause I wanna be leet, too) and you were stepping on the ground he’d peed on. Elite’s just an easy insult to use against people because it almost always gets sand in their pants; he could of used something else, but figured that would get you the most.

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

the problem are the people who like to cry about how others like to play the game. Yes we do have player who “talk to much” but to be able to play a certain way doesnt entitle the label elitism. its just something created by those who dont agree on the play style.

Elitism isn’t about skill yes. Its about the want to do things the best way possible. It just happens that usually these players are skilled.

IRL, people are reluctant to jump into a conversation between two strangers and be critical because you never know what the consequences might be. The consequences of such behavior on the internet are not sufficient to cause such second thoughts.

People use stereotypes like “elitist” in an attempt to give their arguments validity. They believe that others will agree with them that their target is wrong/bad/stupid/etc. because there is some societal agreement about the stereotype. Arguing with people who react this way is a losing proposition. They are trying to push your buttons and get their fulfillment when you react to their words. I find it better to just ignore them.

It’s just another strange aspect of the human psyche, and how when multiple viable options exist, people will be horrified to hear how anyone could find the other options preferable when clearly their path is the “right” path.

I had a similar discussion to this in a fractal run – except he was saying I should run in magic find gear… yes, seriously – magic find gear

His logic went something along the lines of this:

  • Knights gear trades damage for survivability, but a player in knights gear would never be called a slacker or leech
  • MF gear trades off the same attribute for extra loot
  • If a player can survive in zerker gear, they can survive in MF gear
  • It’s kind’ve cute that I run full zerker, but I’m actually pulling more than my share of the weight
  • QED: I should trade up for MF gear, as I could survive in it and still pull my weight in the party.

When I suggested that actually, people who could run zerkers should run zerkers, and running gear that trade off DPS for survival basiclly amounts to training wheels for players who havn’t yet mastered PvE survival, and anyone who could run zerkers but trades off pulling their potential weight for their own personal gain is very much a leech, he then started accusing me of elitism.

What “really” seemed to be going on was the application of two benchmarks. His benchmark was based on knights gear, and says “Why work harder than you have to”, where my benchmark says “Just because you succeeded, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try succeed even more spectacularly next time”

People just parrot things they hear. Some kitten-head hears the word ‘elitist’ thrown around a lot, gets upset with you for whatever reason, and throws the elitist insult at you.

Some people are idiots, move on.
