Just a FYI or PSA.

I received an email today from someone claiming to be a GM saying my account will be shut down in the next 72 hours because of dependencies. I reported it as scamming, not sure what else to do. I took a screenie just in case. I knew it was bogus because of the gold text at the bottom saying it was sent from a player and not a member of the gw2 team. Here is a copy of the email I received below:

Account Will Be Shut Down

We are sorry to inform you that your login account (my name) will be shut down or partially limited within 72 hours due to currency transactions or abnormal login. If you want to remove restrictions, please click the following link to validate: http:account.guildwars2.com.and some rather long text string. Please keep in mind that Guild Wars 2 is a global game with hundreds of thousands of players. This means that standards of behavior must be upheld

Dunno if stuff like this has been around, but at first I panicked then I realized it wasn’t sent by the team. Thank you Anet for including that blip of the bottom of emails. and hopefully if any players receive this email they won’t ignore the gold text and follow the link.

didn’t post link, I didn’t include the long text string after it. I took out some of the syntax to make sure it didn’t show as link, but like I said there was a rather long text string with symbols and letters after it, so what I did include should be fine.

Always check for the Arenanet logo on the mail, if it says on the very bottom “sent by another player and not an Arenanet staff member” then it’s fake obviously.

Not to mention anyone in Anet wouldn’t need any links to ban/shutdown or suspend anyone involved in illegal activities. Everyones accounts are linked to the servers.

Anet Never mail you to say you’re account is going to be shut down, and they certainly wouldn’t ask you to do something as simple as click a link (or more likely follow the link and then put in your account name and password) to “validate” it.

Firstly, Anet already know your account name and they don’t need your password. Secondly if your account had been compromised by a gold seller they would be just as capable of doing that.

If your account is suspected of gold selling or other suspicious activity the first you’ll know about it is when you try and log in and get a message to say you’ve already been banned. After that you can contact Support through the website to discuss getting it back.

Same thing just happened to me and a friend. Just logged in and got the same message. _

Presuming the “report” mail actually works? Since I just reported the one I got.
