Endless Axe/Sickle
Consortium sickle, watchwork pick, there is no best endless axe I don’t think.
Apart from the Watchwork pick none of the infinite tools give extra materials.
The only one that’s supposed to gather faster is the Consortium sickle. The part of the animation that involves your character is shorter because you just swing it instead of bending down, but I’m not convinced it actually gathers faster. I don’t notice any difference when I go from that to a normal sickle and I think if there is a difference it’s a second at most.
(But then I’m equally sure some people will argue that 1 second per gather over a year adds up to X minutes saved and makes a huge difference to their efficiency.)
All the other tools are identical, the only difference is the animation.

Definitely not the flutes, i can tell you that from experience.

Focused Solar Logging Tool does 4 gathers per click instead of 3, which is nice for when the WvW bonus grants extra swings.
Likewise the Glitter Bomb Harvesting Tool does 3 gathers per click instead of 1. Again, nice for wvw bonus gathers, and perfect for guild hall harvesting.
Nothing compares to the Watchwork Mining Pick though.
Hopefully they will bring back the gathering tools this wintersday. They are not endless (although we can hope!!!) but they give snowflakes and if you do not open the box they are in they are stackable.

The Consortium sickle is definitely faster. This is easily seen if you gather the patch of artichokes in Mount Maelstrom. With a regular sickle you will get hit by the troll while you gather but with the Consortium sickle you can gather and move fast enough to avoid all the attacks. The Consortium sickle gathers as fast as the golem if you interrupt the golem. The fused sickle should be the same speed as the consortium sickle but I don’t have that one so I can’t check myself.
Some of the other tools are apparently a bit smarter. If you end up getting an extra swing at an ore node they gather all 4 without you having to press F again.

does it always channel longer or only if it will give an extra strike?
Fused Molten Sickle is just as fast as the Consortium Sickle.
The true answer is buy whatever gathering tool is on sale in the gemstore though (or buy for aesthetics). Remember that the flute sound can get annoying and the solar tools can partially block screen view though (not good if gathering around close wandering mobs).
I highly doubt the Wintersday tools will ever come back – that’s the sole reason why I put off buying unlimited tools for well over a year when those were added…Anet knows that too.

No reason not to bring them back unless they are concerned about the price of snowflakes that aren’t good for much.
Except for the snowflakes they have all the disadvantages of the tools you can buy from vendors.
I got over 250 of those Wintersday tool boxes and I’m still working my way through them now! They’re certainly a cheap way to get Ori tools on all of my characters without having to swap, but I get a bit frustrated with them because I seem to end up with more sickles than anything else so I always have a bunch of those sitting in my bank.

I had somewhere around 20 stacks of the green frostbitten toolboxes (the random ones) back in the day and it lasted me for over a year. This was before shared inventory slots and a single slot per character usage for backup tools was best use of storage. I through away thousands of tools that I didn’t need for picks.
I had ~10 toons parked at hot gathering spots (10x, sometimes multiple times per day) and pounded the ore or elder wood logs for over a year.
It would be a huge mistake for Anet to reintroduce if they intended their customers to buy unlimited gemstore tools. It’s Wintersday but even I don’t think ANet could be that generous.
There is a reason why there is millions upon millions of tiny snowflakes on the trading post and I know I wasn’t the only one to add to that.

The bank space is probably worth more than the few silvers you are saving per tool.
Anyway we could make our tools that gather unbound magic permanent – like buying them of the Black Lion Store? That, or buying an upgrade off the Black Lion Store that would change them to permanent/endless.
How about a standard game-wide upgrade to all permanent/endless tools that would make them gather unbound magic – would this be unreasonable?
They are better than all the other permanent tools i have spent money on. I now have the permanent tools i bought (Tens of thousands of Gems worth) sitting in the bank and have just unloaded a heap of karma to get the ones that gather unbound magic.

Are there any axes that do extra gathers?
It also says here https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/462knr/best_gem_store_gathering_tools/
that apparently the Thresh 5000 is the fastest of all, can someone please confirm?

Wait am I understanding this correctly…
If Im in front of a gather node, like the guild hall for example. I press “gather” and my char picks 3 items from a single gather?
So would that mean you only need to gather 2 times to get all 4 mats from the guildhall harvest nodes?
And same for the logging axe, you would only need 3 gathers (4+4+2) to get everything instead of 4????
edit: Is the speed of those 2 tools the same as others?
If yes, those tools are definitely worth since they will save a lot of time gathering 1 node multiple times.
I would really love to know if that’s the case. Ill definitely be on a lookout for those tools if all this is so much faster..
Look at how effective someone is in a full Dire set.
Nice balance.
