The pet/bear/ugly-dog-thing named the “Murrelow”, is that pronounced like “Merlot”, like the wine?
Mer-Low? or Mer-Uh-Low?

I say, mer – REL – lo.

I don’t remember any videos, off-hand, where the Devs have spoken about Murrelows. Even so, just like with Wyverns, there may be different pronunciations within the Studio.

Hmm, then I shall continue with my new character named “Murrelow Blanc”.. like the white wine, “Merlot Blanc” lol

I pronounce it as mer-REL-lo as well. If it is pronounced Merlot I’m going to have to have a rethink about my guild’s name!

Is it better for worse than “jo-tun”?

I know it’s spelled that way but it should be pronounced Yotun, like in the Thor movies.

I just call it a marshmellow.

I usually pronounce it as MER-REL-LO.

Perhaps if people spell it right (murellow instead of murrelow), the problem of the “merlot” pronunciation will be solved.

slight thread revival

Both the wyvern and Jotun pronunciations pain me – although as I understand it, “wivvern” is an acceptable way to say it. Never heard it said like that before myself, though, which is probably why it sounds all wrong. Jotun with a hard “J”, however, is very wrong in real world pronunciations. Many people here in sunny Norway could be very upset hearing that hard J!

Add in other culprits such as Knut, Niamh, Diarmid (technically a male name, that one). Has me chewing wool, no word of a lie and those are just off the top of my head. Does anyone else have real world pronunciation clashes with Tyrian names?

In-game wyvern is pronounced “weh-vern”, I believe. The technically “correct” pronunciation would be closer to “why-vern”. But I’m sure both are accepted.

As for Jotun, in-game it’s pronounced “joe-ton”. And yup, drives me insane.

I’m an American, and no, no one I’ve met pronounces it “wih-vern”. Everyone says “why-vern.”

Another one in game that drives me nuts is how they pronounce “golem” as “gah-lem” instead of “goh-lem”.

Back before the game launched, Anet released some of the ambient conversation snippets around Divinity’s Reach where the NPCs pronounced “seraph” as “sir-RAPH.” The backlash over that pronunciation on GW2Guru was so big, the admins were mass deleting posts that complained about it. Anet’s response to it was basically your third sentence, but it seems that they did go back and redo some/most of the voice work so they pronounce it correctly.

Try reading Lovecraft. I’ve heard so many different pronunciations of his entities’ names. You can hear the difficulty people have when they try to pronounce it. And most just butcher the names.
