Has anyone else found that enemies will always agro on you, regardless of whether there are another 2 or 4 NPCs in the fight helping you?

I’m currently trying to do part 3 of the new living world content, and at the point where you take the golem to find equipment.

I simply cannot kill the weed dog creature in the screen shot, because he kills me within seconds because he simply will not leave me a lone as a hunter.

I send my pet in first and don’t even attack the boss.

The first person he runs towards… me!

I have my pet attacking him, my elite golem attacking him and the AI golem attacking him and still he chases me.

I’ve noticed this trend from day one of release.

Enemies will pin point you out and go for you and NO one else, even if you don’t attack when in some story-mode or single quest.

It can be very frustrating and in this instance, makes this quest pretty much impossible as this creature is very powerful and I’m a hunter. My pet should taking agro for me.

This was a tough fight. You can’t let it hit you from the side or back or you are instantly downed (or at least I was).

If you select it, as you can see in the picture, it says “deadly while flanking”.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

I didn’t find it impossible and I did LS2 ep3 with my Mesmer and she almost always gets agro’d (stupid illusions). I’m sure that she has less armor and health than your Ranger. I pretty much expect that the vet mobs will go after you first and anything else second. In open world the mobs are not very bright but the LS content is supposed to be a challenge.

As I recall in the PS content the mobs would always chase you no matter what, even when you had allies/pets attacking them. So the mechanics are pretty similar it seems. Best to learn how to strafe and dodge I guess.

Peace.

Reminds me of the gauntlet. As a Mesmer, it really made me mad that the bosses only went for my clones when I was in stealth. Otherwise, they somehow “knew” to go for me every time.

toughness, while it reduces incoming damage, is also a threat mechanic. the more toughness you have, the more aggro you naturally generate. IE, whoever has the most toughness is most likely to be the mobs target. (it’s more complicated than that, obvously, when you include damage dealt, but since you as the PC will do more damage than any friendly NPC, toughness by itself is enough to aggro)

This doesn’t really affect you getting agro, but it might help you advance the story. The fight against the dog is optional, as are all fights in that story instance. By using Scruffy’s Detection Mode and taking the time to safely decode the various traps about the objects you need to gather, you can make it through without a single battle.

From what we, in the dungeon community, can figure, mob aggro is entirely wrong from what ppl think (wiki needs updated to reflect this).

Mob aggro appears to go something like this in order of descending ‘initiation/resolve’:

First to enter mob aggro range (this is the weakest aggro but put here for clarity)
*First to strike mob w/ an attack (this is strong aggro but only lasts a short bit depending on the next two factors)
*Ally with the lowest health (this will quickly become the mob’s ‘fave’ especially if they started the initial aggro; very hard to break away from)
*Ally doing the most damage (this appears to be the strongest form of aggro and will quickly override the others depending on how early into the battle you launch your heavy assault; Berserker Eles are VERY FAMILIAR with this which adds a bit more skill ceiling to playing them; a glass Ele that initiates a battle with a heavy bit of damage will, most likely, maintain high aggro until either the Ele or the enemy is dead unless they lose damage output from kiting and/or another ally’s HP has dropped significantly; also being stealthed seems to reset aggro.
*the next few aggro mechanics seem very random and harder to track the priorities of but they are something like this
:
*ally with highest toughness
*closest target-able ally
*stationary ally inside aggro range (this might actually be higher up on the list)
*any others might include least boons, amount of conditions, etc but would be indistinguishable from the others listed most likely

So that is my aggro breakdown. It is BY NO MEANS official. It is only the ‘common’ interpretation of the game’s aggro mechanics that dungeon runners (possibly just me and my friends) have discussed as we’ve noticed these certain trends.

I hope this breakdown helps you as well as others. As for your particular situation in this fight, I’d say you quickly put out more damage than any of the other NPCs and, depending on your gear, you probably have less health than your pet or the golems. Also, as was stated earlier, LS2 seems to have some new mechanics at work as well.

I did this instance on my Ranger, and I noticed he always targeted me, no matter what. I just kept moving and hitting him when I could. Although it took a bit more time than some enemies, and Scruffy wasn’t all that much help, I did finish it without even being downed. Try to keep moving and dodging would be my advice.

the AI is funny. when you’re trying to keep someone alive, the enemies will aggro the VIP. when you just have help from NPCs, the enemy will aggro you.
you can use this! use crowd control to pull enemies off your VIP, then watch as they walk back to them, all while you’re hitting them. If they are going after you, you can just kite in a circle while your allies pummel them.
I do wish the AI was smarter, and would disengage a target if that target couldn’t be reached. this happens everywhere

I think that some attacks generate more hate than others as well. I use a Krytan Hound and most of the time the KD attack will pull a mob that is incoming on me back onto the pet.

Also I’ve noticed that if the hound uses the KD as a first hit I rarely take aggro at all.
KD, in my experience, seems to generate a large amount of hate.

This is with LB maintaining max traited range as much as possible. I do send the hound in prior to attacking as well.

In Dry Top, definitely. Other places, I think that’s because you do more damage than a mob of NPCs so tag, you’re it, as in the biggest threat.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Aggro page on GW2 wiki
Contains the basics of aggro, good to read.

About the Mordrem Hound, you can always avoid it, by using Scruffy’s detenction radar.

I can tell you the problem now… Rabid Gear = 3k Armor as a Trapper Ranger = High Toughness/Armor = Aggro magnet. You’re welcome. If you are not running Rabid gear and running PVT, you are missing out on soooo much Condition damage. I suggest a 06620 build for traps, with Poison Master if Conditions are not a problem… Best of Luck!

This is as old as the game; Hostile mobs totally ignoring the friendly NPCs who’re with your char and swarming all over you. Like the friendly NPCs are any help, they die if they get glared at and do squat for damage.

I’ve also seen, in the world zones where hostile mobs who’re in a fight with friendly NPCs break off their fight to attack you when you pass by.

And those Weed Dogs do insane damage too.

For what it’s worth, I suspect the aggro mechanic that gets people in PS and LS instances is the “lowest health” one. NPCs (even ranger pets) have very large health pools.

When it aggros you, just kill it. If you want to use bow keep in crippled and range it down. If you’re dying quickly though, make sure it doesn’t have retaliation on it. You’ll kill youself quick if it does.

There are also some enemies which seem programmed to target you above all else. Risen, for example, have a nasty habit of ignoring your minions/pets/illusions and going straight for you. This isn’t the case with many other enemy types.

You are not a hunter. Pets are not supposed to hold aggro. And this is not World of Warcraft.

OMG that dog AI is so broken. I was in the water and it was on the cliff, it couldn’t reach me with its normal attack but it would do its lunge attack and hit me then it would get reposition back to the cliff where I can’t hit it.

He was simple. Just dodge + block his attacks and burn him down in between them. I don’t think I even dropped below 80% hp.
