Here we go again.
Im playing wvw so I need to be useful there but I love the fun in pve too.
Im thinking about engineer or ele since I like the complexity of these classes.
Also I noticed that these classes are abit behind the rest when it comes to dungeons and stuff (the main third are warr/guard/mesmer, maybe thief), is it really a big issue?
So which one and why should I pick?

I’m not sure what you mean by “behind” in dungeons. But ele was very easy to level in PvE. I never had a problem when running the dungeons(levelled my elementalist to frac lvl 28 and also ran Arah enough times for a full set).It all depends on you’r skill level.

As for engineer, I’m not so experienced. I have had him at level 80 for a long time. I am currently rediscovering him(mostly in Wvw). I remember running Sorrow Furnace and Fractals with him frequently, with no problems. Again, it all depends on you skill level.
Elementalist can dish out reasonable damage, but imo his main use in Dungeons is healing and cond. clearing. As for engineer i found that his cookiecutter grenade build was best for PvE. In wvw it’s a different story.

All inn all, both are very fun to play and you shouldn’t have any problems in dungeons.

both are useful, don´t let max/min people discourage you. As a main engineer player, I´d say they are a lot of fun if you accept the fact you will always feel like not “being there finally” and experiment a bit before every new challenge.

Lol… Ele’s are the strongest DPS class and some dungeon guilds are integrating it in their team builds.

Engineer is also pretty good if you know what you’re doing. Amazing Vulnerability, Might, decent DPS, good utility etc.

Both classes are top tier for dungeons (in fact it’s better to stack eles rather than warriors), but eles are far more useful in WvW due to being able to drop the most commonly used combo fields by commanders (lightning, water and fire).

…unless engineers can too in which case take back what I said, they’re both good.

Engineers can have reliable access to every combo field but ethereal, lightning and dark.

@OP: From what I gather, the biggest difference between elementalists and engineers is that elementalist skills frequently follow a “rotation” of sorts, while engineer skills are used on a more spur-of-the-moment basis. I do not play an elementalist myself, but I play an engineer. I am never unhappy with my class, and whenever I create a new character for any purpose, I find some aspect of engineers that I miss.

I play both and eng is far more fun… presuming you can handle the higher skill required for it. Ele is far more rotation oriented for sure.

If it’s PvP/WvW I would go eng any day of the week. Staff eles are desired by zergs, but seriously, who gives a kitten about them.

PvE it doesn’t matter since you can beat the vast majority of PvE without any traits what so ever anyways. Both eng and ele can be very useful to a PvE team.
