In that interview they quote Johnason as saying, “Some of our players believe that because we are doing this Living World seasons, and these features or these big feature-builds, that it means that the features you would traditionally get in an expansion, or the content you would traditionally get in an expansion, is not something that will get added to Guild Wars 2. And that is not true at all.”

Oh dear … features and content you would traditionally get in an expansion? Let me see, what am I used to seeing in mmo expansions? Hmmm … well there is usually a new dungeon or 2, and there is usually a new zone or 2, sometimes a new profession, and almost always new skills for each class …

Let’s see, anything else I’m traditionally used to used to seeing in an mmo expansion? Oh yeah, I almost forgot … traditionally, mmo expansions usually include 5 to 10 new levels to grind, and traditionally they also include a new higher-stat tier of gear to grind …

Of course it’s all just speculation, and we really don’t know. But later on Johanson gives us a small hint, when he says, “… but we absolutely are going to do sweeping new features that you would traditionally only get in expansions – large regions, content and progression additions to your characters in the form of growth and professions and races. Those are all things that you will see in the lifespan of Guild Wars 2.”

I understand what progression additions in the form of professions and races is, but the progression additions in the form of “growth” … now that one is a bit ambiguous to me?

Oh well, I’m sure it will all turn out very well, and the changes will be consistent with the tradition of the GW franchise.

by level 80 should have the best statistical loot in the game.

I can’t believe that they compared living story with Game of Thrones…lol…

Game of Thrones utterly awesome 9.99/10 better than Lord of the Rings, Tolkien.

GW2 Living Story, ‘a bit of a mess’ and I am being very, very kind there…60-70% of GW2 players are not even aware of any story and the rest hate it! GW2 living story 3/10.

Also, if the next 4 updates are focused on Living Story, does this mean no updates for WvW or PvP until March 2014?

Wait… did they just casually announced new professions and new PvP game modes in a random interview, just like that ? o_o
Their stance about that used to be something along the lines of “no way” until just now (and on new professions I agreed that it would be a huge balancing mess).

They have never ever said that they wouldn’t do any of this things, they only said that for the time being (when asked) those won’t be coming, that’s why they pretty much had the possibility because you don’t know what will happen in the future.

No they have been using that same line, word for word since before launch. I can quote it without even looking at it by now.

“We can deliver updates and features traditionally associated with an expansion through the living story method or through a traditional boxed expansion. We have not yet decided which path to take in delivering this content, but some day it will happen”

Of course they have been saying that for 18+ months now and we have yet to get a single expansion feature… so i’d take it with the unending ocean’s worth of salt.

No. No it is not.

Both are made by authors who spent a considerable amount of time crafting their worlds and nailing down details nobody will ever probably know so they can work in a full world. With its own myths, legends, secrets, rules . . .

The only difference is George R.R. Martin went with a more historical interpretation and something less idealized and instead darker and less happy. Tolkein went with forming it as a mythological construct, not unlike how people view Ancient Greece through the myths which are told about it.

I don’t find one better than the other just because one has hobbits and the other has Arya Stark. One had Tom Bombadil and the other had a few really bad weddings/marriages.

I’d say Guild Wars as a whole has felt a lot more like something closer to The Forgotten Realms novel lines from TSR. Really good writing, some really cliched writing (not, mind you, mutually exclusive) and awareness it’s all in a game universe.

I have the feeling we won’t be getting WvW account bound xp until March :-( same with the flamekissed armor redesign. Kinda disappointing really.

Guild Wars seems to take quite a few inspirations from the Elder Scrolls in terms of the structure its lore and the mechanics of its world. The style of writing has always been pastiche, either taking inspirations from other works or directly referencing them. Then again all fantasy is derivative (read: laden with tropes) so that’s not really saying much.

Tolkein vs. Martin is really High Fantasy vs. Dark, Low Fantasy. The latter is more refreshing because of how overdone and derivative the former has become in the recent years. They’re both fairly well-written from a literary standpoint, but they seem great because fantasy is a genre generally written for appeal and not literary quality.

I think the quote was directly referencing the writing of the LS, which in my experience, isn’t anything like the old Guild Wars lore and feels more like a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon in terms of quality. That said the comparison felt like ANet are blatantly coat-tailing the popularity Martin’s work, that is unless they’re referencing the writing of the awful Game of Thrones GAMES :P

Since Launch, huh? Except for the fact that this is completely 100% untrue.

The living story didn’t appear since launch, it didn’t appear until more than six months after launch, so there was no reason to use this language. And then, no one knew what the living story was. It was only coming out once a month and no one was really yet complaining, except about a slow start.

This language didn’t appear until people started complaining that there were no new zones and that the living story seemed to be repeating itself. So they’ve been using “this language” far less than half the time the game has been out.

They’ve said all along they’re working on bigger projects in the background. What exactly do you want them to say?

I think the quote would have been “I guessed who shot JR” if it was fifteen to twenty years ago. Or “I figured out what the Island was” five to ten years ago.

They’re using the presence of a pop culture, hot topic people can actually relate to outside of small reference pools so they can let it be known “there’s a twist people guessed at already, and others saying it’s just crazy”.

It’s not at all representative of what’s in game though, and by using the comparison they’re setting potential players up for disappointment.

Well I suppose they could have aimed lower and say it would have been as surprising as the fate of Deckard Cain. Or aim even lower and say it was like Bella becoming a vampire.

But the risk of every advertisement or attempt to make your product look in any way decent is going to potentially set people up for disappointment.

Well, tradition in this sense doesn’t refer to the prequel but rather to traditional MMO concepts. Moving goalpost stat grind, to be precise.

Or to include more . . .

Expansions indicate there is more content with a certain scope in mind. Gone are the days when Meridian 59’s “Vale of Sorrow” (one region, one node, nothing else) or Baldur’s Gate Tales from the Sword Coast were a viable option to sell. It’s more akin to how Ultima Online or Everquest continuously added big bundles of open area . . . and if it didn’t, people were lackluster about them. So if they say “expansion” and we’re not given something on par with Cantha or Elona but instead overhauls and additions which sum up to roughly the same amount of data size? People will riot.

Then there’s the concept of Expansions for MMOs including increases to level caps or other mechanics, somewhat regularly. Considering this is a nervous fear held by a lot of the people playing GW2 (increasing the level cap, new gear tier) . . . “Expansion” is by nature going to include assumptions it’s coming instead of nebulously “not being ruled out”.

Comparing THIS worthless story to Game of Thrones has me laughing harder than the time I saw a cat fall off a wall, into a bin and have the bin’s lid close over.

Actually, it’s a close second, now that I think about it. Both born of stupidity, one was actually endearing.

Well . . . maybe?

The Red Wedding was not endearing, it was vicious and incredibly over the top. Similarly what happens to Jon Snow later, which drove me to avoid books four and five. At this point my hope is book six is titled “Arya Stark Kills Everyone”.

But that made us emotionally invested. It made us angry, horrified and want to know how such an abomination would be repaid.

GW2’s story just makes me angry that the Elder Dragon Zhaitan still doesn’t fight back, still gets gunned down by mashing 1 on a cannon and some plant is making alliances that don’t even make sense because “It will all make sense one day!” and it will be something like Scarlet caused the Thaumanova Reactor explosion and also was the real reason Abaddon was locked up.

Look for reaction videos, and while I can’t argue it definitely emotionally affected us? Some people got invested, others just said “why am I continuing”?

Not everything invokes the same absolute reaction. No, not even Scarlet. Not even chibi Gwen.

Well GW1’s story was “Abaddon masterminded everything to get free of his prison”. So it’s not like this should surprise anyone . . .
