You can always deposit all of your gold on your bank, then delete all your characters and do a transfer. What you could also do is simply paying the gems for it…

Nah, you can keep all your characters if you pay gems to transfer.
There are 2 ways to transfer:
1) Pay a fee in gems (which means you can pay with either real money or in-game gold). If you transfer this way everything on your account stays exactly the same.
2) Delete all your characters and transfer. If you do this you obviously lose the characters and anything they’re carrying, but you can keep anything that’s in your bank and any account bound currencies (so gems, laurels, etc. not karma).
Obviously the second option won’t appeal to anyone who’s been playing for a while but I think that’s the idea, it gives new players a way to transfer for free if they don’t like the server they picked (since unless they have real life friends to tell them or do a lot of research on the forum and fan sites they have to pick at random with absolutely no idea what they’re getting) whilst still restricting the constant jumping around that caused so many problems, especially for WvW, when transfers were free.
