I think it’s rather gracious that they even give players a choice. They didn’t have to give away a free copy of the game, but they did anyway. Had they not done so the majority of the complaints would not exist. I’ve never seen people upset and getting something for free in my life…. that wasn’t a STD.

They don’t give away a “free copy” out of graciousness, they bundle the core game with the expansion for new customers because they think that way they will sell more copies. It’s business not charity.
Jesus folks, stop acting as though ANet – as a company (there is a difference between the dev you happen to like and respect and the corporate entity) – is our benign friend. They are a corporation that tries to get as much money with their business model from us as they can. Our interest as consumers is to get the best bang for the buck.
That means we are on opposing sides. Should they cater to our every whim? No. Should we blindly buy everything they offer. No. Our interests are a legitimate as are theirs. Hopefully a compromise will be found, if not, they’ll better hope that the influx of new players is bigger than the loss of old players. Because nobody wants to play on empty maps…

BTW: You get a new copy only if you open a new account.

So much left that I wanted to see…

Double Wrong. If the old GW2 is worthless then Anet should just give it away for free to everyone. No charge.

The point is new players get both HOT and the old GW2 Including 4 character slots.

Looks like Anet cares more for the new blood than the people that got them where they are. The proof is in the outrage in this forum and no replay by Anet.

They’re not going to give away free versions of the base game because it will be abused by gold farmers and people who want to farm login/daily rewards- it’s also pretty much worthless as an expansion to your existing account unless you really like being poor, underleveled, and having literally none of the QoL stuff that accrues as you play the game. In order to prevent a massive amount of disposable new accounts, they have gated them behind purchases of HoT and removed all non-HoT accounts from the equation.

@nexxe: the base game is completely free. No charge at all for it once you purchase HoT.

No, it’s still $50 or more. It’s just part of a bundled package. It’s not free at all. Just because it’s bundled, doesn’t make it truly free.

Stop the white knight.
Two people go into same shop to buy a bundle made out of 2 items, lets call the item BOB, Person 1 already have a BOB and person two dont.
Bundle contains BOB and a expansion for BOB.

The Problem is when you leave the store, a store clerk come running after you and say to the one: Sorry Sir, but i see that you already have BOB at home and takes your BOB away.

Both payed the same amount, How do you think person 1 feels now ?

This is the main reason people are getting so angry. We hate when other steal from us

Only in the mind of MMO players is someone else getting something equal to you having something stolen from you.

Better:
Nearly every day Customer A goes to a cafe that has great coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Some days he gets coffee and a sandwich, some days just coffee. Yesterday he went in and bought a coffee and sandwich. Today customer A goes in and just buys a coffee. At the same time, Customer B walks in and orders the same coffee too. The cafe owner notices that Customer B has never been there before and asks, “Is this your first time here? Our specialty is the bacon and egg sandwich.” Sensing an opportunity to create a repeat customer, the cafe owner offers Customer B a sandwich for free with his coffee purchase.

Normal world thinking: The cafe owner is using a promotion to try to create a new “regular” customer.

MMO forum thinking: Customer A had the sandwich that he ate yesterday stolen from him.

If its a promotion then every person entering that cafe that day should get the same deal not just new ones.

Why? Some deluded idea of what is “fair” or constitutes a “slap in the face”? There are promotions limited to new accounts/new customers EVERYWHERE – bank accounts, cable, phone. Is a business not allowed to promote itself as it sees fit?

Fact is, the loudest complainers here are obviously strongly tied to the game and are probably amongst the most likely to purchase the expansion. There is little need to promote to try to modify their behavior.

All I see are people complainig about not getting gems or chracter slits for buying the expansion. You already do not have to pay a subscription fee. I have never seen a community of players whine about not getting free stuff added to a game so much. Maybe it is the non subscription that has created this mentality but arenanet does not owe you guys anything but a game that you have bought to play. Thats it period.

Couldn’t agree more. People are acting so annoying. If you don’t want to buy it just don’t buy it your problems solved just like that! While us players know $50 for several hundred hours of enjoyment is nothing.

I bet these qq people at the movie theater expect every bit of food free because they paid 10 bucks for 2 hours of entertainment

HoT doesn’t have enough content on its own to constitute $50. I saw in another discussion someone comparing HoT to the average PC game just being released and saying it’s a fair deal (because it’s what other games are costing nowadays). But it’s not.

HoT is like DLC for any other game, and I would not pay $50 for one piece of DLC. Not even with the new class, items, and maps. It doesn’t justify paying so much money for so little (at least from what we’ve seen).

When the expansion costs just as much as the core game did several years ago, there’s a problem with the “business model”.

Why do people think that 50 dollar is a one time deal with nothing coming in the following years? It is like an access code to newer updates. This is not a single player game which you buy the game and the amount of content is fixed.

Well, I always complain loudly to new account promotions. That’s why my cable, bank and phone fees are probably much lower than yours.
