I am confused and maybe I was misinformed, but with excess hero points weren’t we able to spend them on things? I have 200 extra hero points after fully unlocking everything on my Mesmer, but what do I do with the excess? Have I missed something here? Or do they just sit there as a number that I can’t do anything with?

Wait for GW2:HoT.

They said we will have things spend them on in the expansion.

We will almost assuredly need them to buy into Chronomancer, and the other elite specializations, once HoT arrives. With 200 to spare after buying everything, I’d say you’re probably in good shape.

I think there’s some kind of quest-line too, to get an elite spec, but I’m not certain.

You’ll be using the extra hero points to unlock your Elite Specializations in HoT and in any other future expansions.

How was the hero points and shards calculated?
Is it just the shards we can spend?
My warrior had over 1.1k skill but now only 384 hero points?
My guard had 7 and now has 215 hero ponits?

Every lvl 80 character got 398 hero points by default just for leveling up. Then any more than that come from the skill point challenges in the world. Any skill points earned any other way were converted to shards

All of your unused skill points got converted to spirit shards. (At least on a level 80 with everything unlocked. I haven’t yet checked otherwise.) Spirit shards can be used to purchase items that skill points used to be able to.

You get hero points automatically based on your level. At level 80, you have enough to unlock all skills. Hero points are used to unlock skills, and later in HoT elite specializations. You can also gain more hero points by doing skill challenges in the open world. There are 189 in the standard map, another 5 in Dry Top, 6 in Silverwastes, and more in the WvW maps.

Guess that is the excess.

i have checked all 8 (lvl 80) characters in my account – 1 of each class, and sitll got 3.7k spirit shards left over in wallet GG.
