I wanted to “give back” a little to my fellow players. I have used other peoples’ Mesmer portals to complete a Daily Jumping Puzzle in the past, so when we had a JP that I was pretty good at, I decided to use my Mesmer to make Portals for others.

The first time someone said “Thank you!”, I responded “You’re welcome!”

10 minutes later, I had the opportunity again, and scrolled back in my text log to send “You’re welcome!”

Two minutes later, I did it again.

Two minutes after that, I tried and was suppressed for excessive messaging. 4 times in 16 minutes doesn’t seem excessive to me, but I don’t make the rules.

Does anyone know what the rule of thumb is on messaging?

MODERATORS: I’m not complaining about the rules! Don’t take down my post! I am merely trying to find out what the rules are, so that I can play within them.

No one knows the exact ‘rules’, I’d guess. Else, someone would have updated the Wiki.

Perhaps it was the fact that you used the exact same words each time that triggered the message suppression?
I’m guessing that the system is set up in such a way that if… say… a Gold Seller tries to spam his copy/pasted message out repeatedly, it triggers it. Or a Troll that tries to spam the same words out just to be disruptive…
Not really sure if that’s what happened or if that’s how the Message Suppression system works… Just making more of an educated guess, really.

I think trolls should have their computers smashed. ’Its all part of the game. U mad bro?’

Hamfast: I’d wager the game flagged you for repeating the exact same message multiple times over.

And they will never tell you the rules for the filter. Otherwise people could easily code their spambots to circumvent it.

Yep, if you keep saying the same thing it offends the gods of creative conversation and you will be cut off. Try being less polite and possibly tossing a few witty insults, those people NEVER get their chat privs taken away /s

I don’t think there is a time limit to this so much as it just checks that you aren’t saying the exact same thing too many times in a row.

I agree that the excessive messaging warning is often excessive. It would be very helpful if they could make it a bit more lenient.

I think from personal experience you’re more likely to get hit with it if you use the exact same wording each time, and especially if you copy and paste or scroll up and repeat it.

But I also think it depends on how many other people are talking in chat. If you’re the only one saying anything it’s going to hit you much faster than if chat is busy. Sometimes when I’ve been the only one saying anything I’ve been stopped on my 3rd message in 10 minutes. Other times I can repeat the same message 4 or 5 times without a problem, and the only difference is lots of other people are talking too.

But since you have no control over the 2nd part I think the easiest way to avoid it is to vary what you say each time.
