There is a waiting period for new players before they can exchange gems for gold. I’m not sure how long it is though.

You can’t. You are still a new player so they have disabled that feature for you because it might be too confusing.

Exchanging gems for gold would be too confusing for new players so you have to level up a bit before you have that option.
It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

It’s to prevent fraud. Stolen credit cards are used to buy accounts which are used to buy gems, bot and spam. Bought gems are converted to gold which is transferred to others which may not be easily traceable. The stolen credit card is then charged back and the account is banned, but what it did to the game is permanent.
Unfortunately, the reality behind their message was too confusing for some people.

Somewhere between 3 and 30 days. They have variable time restrictions in place for different features in the game.

if this is true its better to quit the game, cuz I bought the gems to get gold, and if I have to wait 30 days, without informing me before I buy the gems, its a scam.
seriously disappointed.
What would you possibly need to buy with gems at lvl 22? Armor skins that you need to reapply every 20 min as you lvl up? And gold? You really need that legendary precursor on lvl 22. That’s essential especially on lvl 22.

Dude. Don’t do that on your first character.
Leveling your first time through PvE is one of the greatest parts of this game. Don’t miss out on it like that.
You have no use of maxing professions on lvl 22. You would be creating items you can’t use or sell really low on tp.
And explore, gather materials and craft along the way, you get tons of materials as you lvl trust me, there is no need to buy it from tp.
Hopefully this works out for you sooner rather than later OP. It is an abysmal business practice and speaks ill of the company using it.
For those asking why the OP needs the gems, he doesn’t. None of us need gems at any character level. We buy them, giving Anet our money, because we want them.

He wouldn’t miss out on any of that if he power levels to 80. You can still do the level 10 personal story, events/hearts in low level zones and anything else you can do while leveling.
Getting to max level asap would actually allow him the option for more content in the game at the same time.

I’m sure there are some people that would prefer to have a more linear approach to everything.
It just feels like the levels in the game are pointless and probably shouldn’t have been implemented in the first place.
24 hours from account creation.
There is a handful of things that deal with the in-game economy that a new account has to wait minimum 24 hours before they can do it.
We all had to wait the 24 hours when we started our accounts and so can you.
Even those of us that had the 3 day head start had to wait 24 hours.

The restriction on converting Gems to Gold with new accounts has nothing to do with the NPE. It is something that has been in the game since launch.
It may be ‘cool’ to blame everything on the NPE, but unfortunately, it is not always the case.
OP, welcome to Tyria, and happy adventuring! There is no rush to do anything in this game. You will more often regret rushing, than not.
