Exclusive items should stay exclusive.
I agree OP, 2000%. they brought back the mystic forge conduit that they said “they would never bring back” and I’m thinking about re-downloading League because of it…
I like the halloween way of doing things. They kept the weapons prestigious, but still introduced them back enough to keep a supply.
…. I really want a Scythe Staff….
The thing though is, there are no exclusive items.
Never has Anet stated “this is limited edition and it will never be available again”
Oh gosh it will be fun when they have a “Retired Black lion weapons sale” reintroducing all old current 500-1000 Gold black lion weapons at 1-2 tickets.
If something is exclusive or limited edition it should stay that way, but here your only assuming something is exclusive based on your own assumptions.
aftermarket prices shouldn’t be forced to inflate in any virtual econ !!
people should have a chance dude
Well when you develop an alternative reward and progression system that feels sufficiently rewarding to veteran and elite class players without relying on exclusivity, rarity and prestige let us know….
The people complaining about the concept are not offering alternatives.
11x level 80’s 80+ Titles 2600+ skins , still a long way to go.
Rarity yes, exclusivity no. Seasonal items should always come back at least once a year.
There are more than enough cosmetic items in game that even if everything was readily available, we’d still have dozens of ways to create unique and interesting looking characters. And that’s what really matters, imo.
Sums up what I think about this topic, really.
I think every item in game should be available to new players, unless of course, you want the game to die eventually. You are putting an expiration date on the game by withholding content.
Not having items available to new players is telling new players" no point in playing this game now since you lost out on multiple years worth of content you will never have access to." This makes games not new player friendly, and eventually people will just start skipping the game all together since that ship has already sailed. This is why many players will not play older games, or games they missed release on causing the population to decline over time. They do not want to invest time and money into games that they will never be able to access most of the content on.

Birthday items do exactly that. Every player gets to have birthday items on their birthday, and veteran players get more birthday items since they have played longer.
Exclusive items/ expiring items just put an expiration date on the game since it deters new players from playing the game at all thus contributing to population decline.

I personally think it’s very selfish and unfair that some players want to deny new players a special item that they may really want. I believe everyone should have a chance at getting any item in the game they want at some point. Items that are completely exclusive are a cheap, distasteful and they are possibly enabling video game addiction. Some people need to learn the value being kind and sharing, This is after all supposed to be a family friendly casual game.

A birthday gift only covers one of the three pillars of rewards , Time , Skill and luck.
That doesn’t sound like a fun game to play, plus you’ll have skilled players going. “Hang on I can play 10 times better than this guy and he’s getting the same stuff as me? ,This isn’t respecting my abilities or time.”
I have literally never heard of player not playing an MMO because there was an exclusive item they missed. To anyone who’s been playing MMO’s for a while it’s an expectation. Prior to GW2’s forums I’d not seen anyone seriously think that access to someone elses exclusive was a fair or good idea. They’d normally be shouted into oblivion for the level of cheek and attempt at devaluing someone elses reward. (Not saying it was right to shout them out but it’s what was done).
On a separate note to the people complaining about people wanting to be “special snowflakes” or to show off. That’s been a pretty big aspect of MMO’s as well, I know you mean it as some scoffing insult to those who dare have a differing opinion or get enjoyment from it, but really it has been part of MMO culture forever. (I remember when forum tags would contain fancy graphics listing as many bragging rights as a person had).
I respect that you have wildly different views to me and that you can express them but do try to be civil as well (not directed at anyone in particular but I have seen several insults in relation to self esteem/real-world situations against people for exclusivity in this thread).

I think it depends on what you call ‘exclusive’. Items that you worked for in game that were only available for a time and as account bound items should be. Items like the Chinese new year fireworks and Ram backpacks should be, at least until the next time we have a year of the Ram or other animal. In these cases you really should have to be there.
Gem store items aren’t really exclusive, anyone and everyone on at the time can buy them. Eventually they should be cycled back. These items will still be rare, most won’t buy them at all. This includes weapon skins bought with claim tickets.
A few items like those from the Wintersay draw are only available in tiny quantities and as such some like the Greatsaw greatsword are very expensive on the TP. These should remain as they are.

What makes a game fun to play is challenge. People vary greatly though on what they consider challenging, and the game should offer many ways one can challenge oneself. Some people considering fighting other players challenging, others like to stockpile shinies and collections, others like jumping around like mario on crack. This is what makes a game fun, not just " having something that only players that were here at this exact time received". There really is no skill or purpose involved with that. You already deal with luck in the game with the drops as it is, some get precursors the first week they play, while others play years and never receive one.
Making something take time and dedication to achieve =\= “I have something you can never obtain in game since you were not playing it when I did”. Instead having items that it takes time and effort to achieve = you can have this too, if you put forth the same effort I did so to achieve it. You are still a special snowflake, no worries, since most do not want to put forth the time and effort to achieve difficult things.
I do understand how people vary greatly in what they are challenged with in a game, and think the game should take all of those into consideration before putting an expiration date on their items and influx of new players. I have no interest playing a game that does that if I didn’t start out playing it, no point in paying for something when I cannot access content, and I know many others come in to games and leave for the same reason, day late and a dolla short. ( Luckily with GW2 I played GW1, filled out the surveys used to create GW2 and have had it since the beginning). However, if friends that I wish to have come play with me cannot enjoy the same content I have, I would rather move on to a game I can play with them and they have as much fun as I do. Being able to play with friends that haven’t played as long as I have > than playing a game that excludes them. Then we just go find a game we can play together with equal enjoyment instead.

Been here from the start, let everyone have a fair chance at everything. As long as it’s not made drastically easier to get it the second time around, then it’s fine with me.
I don’t like items because they’re super rare and unavailable any more. I like them because I like them. If they made Foostivoo the Merry available during the next Wintersday, I wouldn’t be upset at all (so long as he isn’t a 400 gem mini, or from a vendor for 10 snowflakes) – I like the little fella because he’s cute.
I like having some exclusive items in the game. I like it that some are earned like Liadri, and I like it that some are, “I was there when…” like the celebration cap or the Mad Memories. I think of those things sort of like concert T-Shirts — you get them at the concert, and you don’t get them anywhere else. When I see one out in the world I think, “Oh cool! I was at that concert too, and it rocked!” Or, “Man I would have loved seeing that…”
I was a little bummed when they put the season 1 rewards on the laurel vendor, not because I want to have things that no one else can have, but because it’s like having concert t-shirts at the mall shop. But I was far more bummed that season 2 didn’t have those types of memory rewards.
I never resent the person who has what I do not, or something that I can’t get any longer; nor do I believe that other people pay so much attention to what I have that they are wrapped in envy when they see something that I have that they can’t get. I think it’s odd when posts imply that people do feel either of those things.

I disagree with OP because:
1) RNG
2) RL > GW2
3) Collections
Just keeping it short and succinct. Also:
Rarity yes, exclusivity no. Seasonal items should always come back at least once a year.
I don’t want to be the coolest looking kid on the block, I want us all to look awesome. Did they now? In any meaningful fashion or should I assume it’s still super rare enough it won’t do anything for the going price?
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
I never understood why some people can enjoy something only when others can’t have it.
Because it makes them feel superior and they like that feeling?
The only thing that should stay exclusive is the PvP tribal/wolf ranked skin- it was only available before the wardrobe changes if you pvp’d & were able to get wolf rank. Ranks were harder to get then, so it was a sense of accomplishment when you got a rank related skin. Nowadays, any sort of casual can waltz in & get rank 80 so I’m hoping the tribal armor stays exclusive to the people who earned it.
When it comes to the “rabbit ears” or “wizard hat” maybe have a cycle of them every once in a blue moon. But the wizard hat was offered freely before the wardrobe changes on the 1st wintersday. It looked awful & there wasn’t anyway to store your skins so you either wore it or allowed it to take up space for so long. I wish I had never deleted my wizard hat. But that’s my fault.

That isn’t reason enough to restrict content from new players though and reduce the influx of new players for years to come. The benefits of having exclusive items in game do not outweigh the negative impact it has on the games longevity. Telling new players " you cannot access multiple years worth of content" isn’t exactly welcoming them to the game. Why play the game where you do not have access to content when you can just go play a new game and have access to everything? It will cause the game population to decline over time as new players choose games where they have more access to content than choosing games where they do not.
Games are in competition with one another for new players, and expiring items is not a good way to make them very competitive.
