Q:

So I have a question. I logged into my account after few weeks to try the new skill system. I checked my existing skills and the ones that are trained. Why are there skills available even if I didn’t trained them? Moreover why should I spend 9 HP for a skill (Conjure Fiery Greatsword f.e.) that I already have? So confused. Tanks.

Ah, you mean you have Conjure FGS equipped on your skill bar even though you don’t have it unlocked? In that case it is a bug and should be reported.

If you are at below level 80, then most likely you had that skill on your bar before, but lacked the HP to autounlock it. If you are at level 80 (or still have unused HPs left), then it’s a glitch in Anet’s unlocking script.

That confuses me a bit too.

Some of my utilities have been untrained even though I picked them up a long time ago. It’s not a problem since I’m level 80 on all my characters, but it could be a problem if I wasn’t.

I dont get it. If they made a revamp they should reset all, refund the HP and leave them there to spend as you want. Now they automatically assign hero points, leave some skills available and it is a total mess without an option to HP refund.

Even a cursory search of the first few pages, if not the first page of this forum would have given you the answer to this.

They reset all skills. Blanked out your character. Then based on the traits and skills you had selected before the change their system tried to recreate your build, buying back skills and trait lines it thought you needed.

I’m not going to get into the whys of this, because it’s extensively covered anywhere else.

I think he answered it pretty accurately. Seems you’re the one with reading problems Alex.

If you want a more in-depth answer then, like Kal said, scan the first few pages of the forum.

Your questions aren’t that clear tbh. Anyway…

Racial skills are now gifted; they’re all free and available from the get-go.

The patch process went like this:

- ANet untrained all your old skills and traits.
- Skill points from this were temporarily refunded to your character.
- the number of SPs accrued from levelling + skill challenges was reserved; the balance was converted to Soul Shards and put in your wallet.
- The reserved pool of accrued SPs was then converted to Hero Points.
- Then (in their wisdom) ANet took the liberty of spending from each character’s Hero Points in order to try and emulate as close as possible the build you had created before the patch, and the skills you had unlocked.
- all this happened as you logged in on each character post-patch.

To be clear:
- ANet decided to spend (some or all) of your (non-refundable) Hero Points for you. They did this with the best of intentions (described in a thread elsewhere on the forums). Nevertheless, it was a bad error of judgement and a poor decision. Although the fallout from this decision has only really impacted <80 chars, it’s really the principle of the thing that has annoyed a lot of people.

If you’re level 80 you have more than enough Hero Points accrued simply from levelling to unlock everything anyway.

Any spare HPs you have after unlocking all traits and skills are saved per character; allegedly, these can be used in future content (eg HoT) to unlock new things.

If you still don’t understand what I asked I will try to give another shot.

My elementalist has a conjuring wheel filled till Conjured Frost Bow. It wants me to fill it with 9 HP for an elite skill called Conjured Fiery Greatsword. But… I already have that skill in my kit ! I dont know if it is a bug or design choice. I am only asking why is this so. Why i have skills that i didnt trained?

As to your first response it does pretty much answer it unless you’re having trouble wording your questions correctly, Alex. (see, I can be a condescending kitten too!)

Unless you’re in PvP, if you have a skill on your bar that you are able to use that you have not unlocked by way of Hero Points just yet, then I would submit it as a bug.

Thank you for a normal response. Why is so hard to respond in a simple manner before sending people to “read other pages on forum”.

I can’t answer your specific question I’m afraid; maybe someone else can.

I can only say again, in more general terms, that a) racial skills are ‘free’ and unlocked by default, b) ANet will have unlocked certain of your skills and traits for you (by spending your HPs without your permission) to try and emulate what you had before.

Also, just as a pointer: might I suggest taking a less snarky and impatient attitude towards people trying to help you. Your original questions were a bit confusing to me, and perhaps to others. You sound confused and frustrated yourself, perhaps understandably. But maybe try not to take that out on people trying to help. Just a thought.

I can take your criticism and agree with you to a point. Maybe my question wasn’t clear enough and that is my fault. But certainly I am not the one being condescending and impatient. If people doesn’t understand the question they shouldn’t respond with a definitive answer especially not with “read other threads.”

But as I said you are right and I will try to formulate my questions more thoroughly.

Because, as is clearly the case by everyone that responded not understanding what you were asking, you did a very poor job of explaining your situation.

This is definitely a bug. If you haven’t unlocked a skill in the wheel, but you have access to that skill in your bar, then that’s a bug. I mean, that should honestly be very clearly a bug and shouldn’t need clarification, but whatever. It’s clarified, you’re describing a bug.
