Hello there!

I believe current exotic and ascended armors are quite lame by look. They look very simple, casual and ordinary. Why not put some awesomeness onto them?

For example: add fire, smoke, lightning and rest magical items to these amours so people can be proud of their time spent on game. Current amours doesn’t look rewarding, but opposite: gives feeling of random poor drop.

As attached picture, its me wearing end game armour. Where are effects at them?

For example: at my left shoulder, there should be some kind of fire getting out of that circle. Knifes should have some glow as well.

Come on, I know designers at ANET can do better than this! Show some creativity! Give players awesome feeling after obtaining some piece of gear!

That is a very cool outfit. Sparkles would make it look worse.

So, let me get this straight – you think covering up details on beautifully designed armor with particle effects is creative, and that such armor would be something to feel proud about?

No thanks. I’d rather not be a walking matchstick.

WoW must have ruined my tastes about awesome amours. GW2 amours looks very simple and unattractive if u ask me.

Ascended armour… plain… casual… ordinary… – have you seen how much jewellery and ornate designs are thrown onto those armour sets? Personally, I agree that they look lame (largely due to this, not my cup of tea), but more special effects won’t help. I can’t stand seeing players in CoF armour, spinal blades/wing and certain legendaries all thrown together with black and red dye as it is… we don’t need to make things worse.

Oh, this is so extremely subjective. GW2’s beautiful texturing and attention to detail ruined my tastes for WoW’s low-rez big blocky giant-shouldered crudeness in armor, big time.

Some effects on some armor can be nifty, but not for the mere goal of making it sparkle. Me, I like stuff that looks wearable and useful while still beautiful and elegant. I’m so happy the base Carapace doesn’t have the washing-out blue glow, though I’m working to unlock Luminescent anyway. But dyes will work so much better on the Carapace!

I’m actually working on getting the ascended coat for my (human female) ranger primarily because I like the skin and I think it does look quite ornate. It’s not flashy, but I wouldn’t mistake it for starter armor. I like quite a few of the dungeon armors too.

If you want ones with particle effects there are some options. CoF armor is the obvious choice, or the hellfire/radiant sets (although the full set is not a realistic goal right now). But I absolutely don’t agree that all exotics/ascended armor should be like that.

(Also if you dye the full set black you are going to lose a lot of the detail that makes the armor look interesting. Experimenting with different colours can do a lot. Even using a few different dark dyes (like combining Midnight Ice, Midnight Fire, Abyss and Iron) can make the different parts look more distinct.)

I’ve been playing around with dyes and luminescent armor in the preview window (trying to decide which pieces I’ll want) and I’ve found that contrasting colours can actually create some nice effects. Blues and purples don’t really show, they make a subtle change but not much. But you can get some interesting effect with reds and greens.

Not all armor can be flashy. Just search out what you like, then work for it.

OP has a point in a lot of the default skins looking bland or, frankly, lame. But really, that’s all highly subjective as everyone is bound to have different opinions on that.

One thing I would love is more real-world looking armor skins, as opposed to three not-so-great looking verions of chainmail or scale armor. But then, I’ve got no interest in armor with flames, sparkles, glitter, skulls, kittens, or bats hanging on it.

It’s odd that GW1 had better armor skins than GW2.

I would agree that medium ascended armor looks very average.

I’m not going to grind for the stats but I would grind for the look if I wanted it.

Lucky for me I don’t…

I think that what you are saying is nothing more than a matter of taste. I really like alot of the armors precisely because they aren’t ridiculously shiny or oversized etc. There are currently quite a few flashy weapons in the game, though I must admit there aren’t that many flashy armors but that does not bother me personally. I think there are already alot of players out there that use ridiculous combinations of armor that make my eyes hurt :P I’m glad that the over-the-top glowy armors such as Radiant aren’t rampant in the game. There are many really amazing armor and weapon combinations that can be used to create a cool look in this game and if there is one type of armor that’s lacking it has to be medium. Medium armors have the least variation in armor design. I know you are using a thief in the example, but even then it doesn’t need shiny ornaments. They just need to get armors that aren’t based on long leather coats.

creativity for me starts with the player. Don`t get me wrong if you want to wear full armor sets as they come sure, why not. But its so easy to sit on my kitten and scream and yell for more content items I probably wouldn`t even need if I used my own fantasy just a little bit.

But Anet has a lot (and more coming) of armor set pieces to choose from.

Normally when I pimp my toons, their armors have 4-6 different set pieces on them, after that you will catch me coloring the stuff for hours until I`m really happy with it (tons of colors to choose from).

Atm, I made myself a council guard Asura. Took about 1.5 hrs but the end result is worth more than some sparkles popping out of her ears making her a “Vegas” toon. And, the good thing is my character looks like it came from the game designers as is, hence, makes me feel more like I fit in the games lore. I’m sure I`m not the only guy that does this, you might want to try it out.

Boxie Togg (main)… probably Tyrias only Asuran Mesmer that ultimately fails at jumping puzzles
Stinky McLane… the only Necro known to have a toothpaste fetish
Lefty (give me a second) Fiddlesticks… one Engineer, two clumbsy hands…

While it is nice to have some armor and weapons with particle effects, I really don’t think we need lots of it all the time. They would could lag for lots of people, while overall detracting from the ‘specialness’ that having a particle effect should have.

Many GW2 armors have a lot of detail to them, if you bother to look (and don’t just pour black dye all over it). Playing with an assortment of colors can pop contrasts that sometimes you don’t catch right away. Adding particle effects would simple obscure a lot of this detail further, as well as make many of these sets just outright gaudy. No thanks. This isn’t WoW….

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

So you complain about lack of sparkle and shine but then you die your whole armour as black as can be? The devs may not be the only ones lacking creativity.

I may only like 30 % (wild guess) of the armours in game and think there should be more but you could already do more with the tools you have.

Apart from that weapons with effects exist, bright shiney colours/dies do, too and as far as I understand the patch, glowing armour is on its way.

I’m afraid I have to disagree with you as well, SW. Adding particle effect just makes the armours ugly. It detracts from the artwork (and for all it’s other shortcomings, GW2 is most certainly visually a work of art.) and honestly it devalues the original artist’s abilities.

Rather like bringing home a DaVinci original, but insisting it MUST be viewed only under a blacklight/strobe combination.

There are few enough beautiful things in the world – there’s no need to make those that still exist gaudy because some aren’t equipped to appreciate them.

armors are poorly done? you clearly don’t play at max res :P

I’d like to point out that Gw2 is stylistically different from WoW, you can’t really compare the two. Gw2 goes for a more “realistic” style, whereas wow goes for the cartoony/fantasy style. Personally I prefer the first over the second, but I can see people wanting the sparkles… and that’s why we have zodiac armor… and the dreamer

Beauty is on the eye of the beholder, IMHO… and I personally think that an overabundance of particle and glowing effects can take away from the quality of the armor.

That said, there are plenty of options if you want armor with some glow on it. Going for the medium armor which is what your character seems to be using, CoF armor has plenty of fire effects on it, SE armor has a little bit as well. If you don’t mind getting gem store armor, there are the zodiac and flamewalker sets. There are also the radiant and hellfire sets you can get from achievements, and the fused gloves that you can get with laurels if you didn’t get it with the achievements when it was available. Also some pieces of the sylvari cultural armor glow at night using the same color you picked at character creation, but I think none of the medium ones do.

There are also the back pieces that you can use to complement your look, many of which glow. Some of the previous living story backpieces can still be gotten from the trading post (though they’re usually not cheap) like the holographic back wings, sun, lightning and wind catcher skins. Others can be crafted (but it’s not cheap to do so), the chaos of lissa, light of dwayna and shadow of grenth, and there’s also the fired of balthazar that you can get from PvP

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.

There should be more open slots for color on higher level armors. Give me 4 slots on my chest gear instead of 2. Let me add some gold to where buttons should be – let me add a nice brown leather color where straps are located. Let me have good use for all those dyes I collected!

There should be more open slots for color period. 3 should be an absolute minimum on any piece of armor.

We already have 2-4 colour options on each piece of armor, except rare occasions… and that’s already not common in games (at least to my knowledge). Do we really need more?Personally I think we have enough.

Are you listening ANet? The vast majority here are against particle effects and Las Vegas lights.

Now can we talk about toggles to turn off footsteps and clouds and swooshes and that sort of thing from our Legendary Weapons? (As well as one to toggle off our view of OTHER people’s effects). I’m sure more people would work on making them if we had this option.

I definitely would like more color options for armor. I finally made my ascended armor for my warrior and I felt it was worth it. The looks do depend on what you use your colors so beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. I like mine and don’t really care what others think.
