Expanse in Gem store?
Can’t remember where I saw it, but I know I read somewhere that the expansion won’t be in the gem store on release.

Summed up: No, you cannot buy the expansion with Gems from the in-game store.
Im pretty sure you can find someone that will let you trade gift cards of gems of equal value to the price of box later mate.
However I dont think you should trust anyone to give you a key for it and if you buy the gem cards anyway may aswell buy the box.
Well I just had an odd idea/question…Would the new expansion be added to the Gem store on release? Technically Arenanet will still be getting paid, since someone has to buy said Gems in the first place to be traded for gold, so it’s not like it would really reduce sales…at best it would increase them.
Given I’m sure it’s still a good bit away from an actual release, heck we don’t even have pricing info yet, but it’s something I was curious about. E:3
Anet don’t make money on people converting gold to gems. You will not be able to buy the expansion with gems.
At most you’ll see a Digital Deluxe upgrade to the expansion, but not the expansion itself.
What a lot of people fail to understand is gems don’t have any value and developers don’t sustain themselves on verbal abuse and unicorn farts alone. When you (or someone else) buys gems, you aren’t putting x amount of dollars into gems, you’re paying to keep GW2 running; the money’s gone, it’s been consumed by salaries, bills, investments, taxes, dividends, and the like. The gems we’re getting back for paying this volunteer subscription are basically tokens of appreciation that we can trade in for free items (nothing in the gem store can’t be acquired through grinding gold).
You can’t pay for an expansion with valueless tokens any more than you can expect to get expansion for free in a subscription-based MMO just because others have been paying the subscription fee.

Indirectly they do.
Someone must have paid for those gems and put them into the system.
Gems are not created out of thin air in the conversion.

Well, if you buy gems with gold you earned in the game, you’re not really “paying” for the gems. Not like if you bought them with a credit card, for instance.

Hmmm
The wiki does not make this clear. “The supplies are contained entirely within the exchange.”
But from what I can tell some of the gems and/or Gold are made from thin air.
Can Engi please have more than one viable skill set in PVE? Turrets maybe?

You don’t pay with cash, but the gems are paid with cash – by someone else who bought them and exchanged them for gold.
Still, those gems might have been bought months ago, and it wouldn’t be easy for Anet to calculate the income from box sales using such method. Which is likely one of the reasons why expansion won’t be obtainable using gems.

True, those from achievements, but it adds up an insignificant amount of gems only, compared to those created using direct cash purchases.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

Speaking of wouldn’t the number of gems bought directly far outweigh the amount bought with gold? Has Anet ever released any numbers on this?

I’d rather not see the hyper inflation of the gold→gems prices myself, it’s already been going up with the lack of new gold sinks in game.
