Greetings,
While a full fledge alliance system would be awesome, I’d like to see a way of grouping guild so that the following things can be accomplished.
Guild Pane > Alliance (Important for maintaining healthy Communities)
A mere skeleton would open the door to more advancement of this system but Communication is key in an MMO and having the ability to join like minded guilds together in the form of a shared chat channel would be wonderful. From there you build a bigger system but we need a foundation. We needed this foundation 2 years ago.

The whole lack of alliance systems was pretty rough at launch, to be honest. Massive alliances from GW1 could no longer stick together and had to unify guilds come GW2. And that just led to some unnecessary conflict and differences for some.
Alliance system would be amazing, Anet.
can i ask the point of something like this if…
-there’s no player to player trading
-there’s no open world pvp
-there’s no real way to get any benefit out of guild alliances save for social benefits

Sure you can, how about:
- Smaller guilds can remain small while having more players to play content with
- Guild Missions, maybe fire off Alliance Missions instead of for 1 guild?
- Social benefits

first two are accomplished by having a friends list and alternate guilds.
ii hope they do this, is awesome
This would be great,
Specially because of n.1 for content and wvw havok teams lotso times we end having havok groups with other guilds but have no way to coordinate/comunicate fully, but in say chat :P
Friend lists work to certain degree but its not optimum when rallying big groups, and alternate guilds are limited,
I dunno why “social benefits” wouldnt be considered since one of the best things in GW2 is community lol
I would also addres a concern of a minority, im colorblind :o so yes i confuse colors a lot, especially on diferent context of backgrounds,
You would not imagine how hard it is to see guild members that are not in party with me from the other ppl in wvw, would be great to be able to see guild members or alliances in mini map just an idea so dont forget about colorblinds
Love to all

Lighsbane, the same can be said for Why Not. Fact is we play MMO’s to be social. If we didn’t want to be social we would play single player games. Social tools in MMO’s are critical to the overall success.
In the early days of MMORPG’s Alliances were a big deal. Many of us traveled across games as an Alliance. Hell the Guinevere Alliance from DAOC is still alive and well today and I see their posts on Facebook daily. It allows a diverse population of communities to join together to aid and assist one another and enables them to communicate.
I don’t care what anyone says, you can only go so far being social if you close your family off in a room with a single phone line out. Thats not socialization. We want a blood pub to gather with friends, family, and kindred spirits. A place where we can communicate and talk as friends without being forced to represent the same guild. Sure you can message random people but how does 100 people talk to another 100 people? Thats a whole lot of tells. It’s not effective. A single chat channel to share between multiple guilds would enable closer relationships between players and allow small guilds to thrive as small guilds.
My question is “Why Not?” What is so wrong about alliance systems that games today are foregoing them? Perhaps if they focused on enabling communities rather than restricting them a beautiful community would be born within their games.
“Communication is first and foremost the most essential feature of any MMO”
This idea opens opportunities for many features. I like it!

Alliances are great and would have all kinds of possibilities here. There’s PVP of course, some newer and grander version of Alliance Battles. That should be obvious enough to speak for itself.
PVE could also make a lot of use of it in a variety of ways I can imagine. They could go as far has having alliances be semi-political factions, where they can actually affect things in the world, or control things that would benefit the member guilds. Maybe let an alliance earn the right to claim territory and have there be certain decisions they can make on its behalf (and special benefits for member guilds).
Perhaps a formal alliance would even be needed to kill Mordremoth, like certain locations / tools / npcs that have to first be claimed by guilds for the events, and the guilds have to be allied. Not a job for a single guild or randoms, multi-guild planning and coordination is needed. Basically they’d be serving as a new Pact (what with the old one getting wiped and leaving a power vacuum).
Really, it’s not hard to come up with excuses for guilds to have joint operations while retaining their own autonomy. As a “faction”, it’s more effective for an alliance to pull weight in the world than a single guild. Even big guilds can often have trouble getting enough people to show up for things. An alliance can really help widen that pool and build more social interaction in a community.
Also, you can check out each other’s guild halls. : )
Without server pride anymore being as how the mega server has been installed everywhere with the exception of WvW we can no longer in an effective way support one another. While I have no issues in PvE working with anyone from anywhere, I find an alliance system could be very helpful in the WvW world, and the social part anywhere else in the game. There are a couple changes I would like to make to the suggestion of such a system from what was recommended by Fog in the first post.
“Alliance Leader is the creator of the Alliance”
I don’t see a point in an official Alliance Leader role. I understand the real life implications of a Leader(s) of such roles, but not here. While Fog and I are on the same server and personally I can trust him with everything and making decisions on my behalf, I am not sure guilds on other servers would be willing to submit to another leader elsewhere. Unless this role of an Alliance Leader is only an image thing or restricted to same server alliances, I would rather see the guild Leaders of each guild be an official leader/ambassador to the alliance. Keep the control and power within each of the guilds.
I think if cross server alliances are allowed you would have even more planning across servers that could alienate people outside of that alliance in the WvW population. But at the same time PvE could be aided by cross server alliances so I am not sure how to balance that.
I would like to see a server chat option added. We have to do something to allow server pride as the mega servers have destroyed much of it. Something where WvW guilds could reach more members on there own servers, a way that a general message could be relayed to come help defend or save something. Just a way those on the server can communicate. Of course this could still be turned off by players not wanting more text scrolling on the screen.
Mistress,
If they don’t have a leader set in the code, it means that they have to build a voting script for add/remove. By having a leader it allows that person to add and remove as needed without having to write extra scripts that require a whole other layer built on them for the voting process. It’s a ease of implementation line item.
All of the new features have been announced. So this should most likely go under the Suggestion topic. In which case yes the is very much needed at some point in the future.

Social benefits are everything in an MMO. I’d love to see the return of alliances.

I doubt all of the new features have been announced. No game developer shows all their cards at first release. What would they feed the PR machine until release? Marketing today is all about feeding the public bite sized tidbits that make them hungry for more. Teasers. What we’ve seen so far is likely just the setup for more.
While the Alliance system was good in GW1 there WAS a reason for it….Factions (Kurzicks & Luxons)
I think to this would be some what hard to achieve, only way I could see this, if we had something like Guild Wars Factions which was different.
Now maybe WvW but, I am not so sure about that, if you wanted to merge 2 big Zerg teams.
Before they can implement alliance system, they need to have a purpose for the alliance and not just mere social benefits or guild missions.
They also need to consider the effect towards WvW.
Fog you have a point on the leadership of such alliances and I will agree with that…
I think what I am trying to steer to is more of a way to build a better community and better server pride. Now I know guilds are now a mix with people from all servers, but I think the server pride issue is probably a much more needed issue to address then two friendly guilds working together.
Not saying alliances are not needed, but what we will see happen if there is a system like GW1 had are large guilds allying up with one another and small guilds allying up with other small guilds and now you are almost no better off then before, especially if you add in alliance type events, or things of that nature. If we did not have a mega server setup everywhere in the world I think alliances would add to the community in a large way and beyond the social aspect. I think to introduce them now just aids in the social aspect and not a lot of other things. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to log in and say “Hey Smitty!” and get a response via alliance chat, but does it solve anything?
I like the idea of Alliances, and want to see them, but I agree with the post above from SkyShroud, “they need to have a purpose for the alliance and not just mere social benefits or guild missions. They also need to consider the effect towards WvW.”
