I’m just curious, but why would a 1 year old character receive a scroll that is only beneficial until you hit level 20? I would consider myself a casual player, yet in a year, I have 5 level 80’s, a level 60 and 2 characters between levels 30 and 40. Personally, I feel like the scroll is the equivalent to receiving a new ball mouse for my gaming pc.

Wouldn’t a Tome of Knowledge work out better? It gives you 1 level worth of XP unless you’re a level 80 already. At that point, it rewards a skill point.

Throwing it out there hoping a change can be made. If not, I guess I’ll be waiting for 8 new playable races or professions before I can use these. /shrug

edit: In hindsight, I wouldn’t mind if the experience scrolls gave 20 levels to an obvious cap at 80.

What a wonderful question, I think the rest of the community is a little confused too. Oh well I trust Anet to listen to their players and do something about it though!

In all honesty, I think the experience scrolls as-is are a bit confusing. In those first 20 levels, you get comfortable with your weapon sets, skills and traits as well as how mobility plays a big factor in survival. Why skip the first 20 levels? By the time you hit level 20, you get a little courageous, attempt to solo a level 25 veteran and his 5 lackeys, learn a valuable lesson on being outnumbered, repair your armor and develop a little modesty. Without that lesson, our community would suffer (reaching big time here).

On the flip side, once you hit 60, you just want to be done and get that nice ascended gear you’ve been drooling over for the last 15 levels.

PLEASE make it +20 levels.

Or hell even make a character instantly lvl 80 that would be amazing.

Levels are so pointless in this game anyway, I’d love to be able to skip the monotony.

New players can’t get this scroll, if you’ve got the scroll odds are you have more than one level 80 character to understand the gameplay.

I do wish they added 20 levels instead of making you reach level 20. On another note, I just got a bit sad as I realized how pointless levels really are in this game :c

Having all 10 of my toons at 80s I have as much use for these as I do for regular trans stones. That coupled with multiple queen minis and ummm yeah………pretty lack luster to say the least.

I’m not sure who they have in charge of rewards, but obviously (not based on this alone but on the game as a whole) they are out of touch with the player base. That might be something they might want to look at considering how vital it is to this genre of game. It’s kinda one of the basics and it’s rather perplexing that either they don’t know enough about it, don’t recognize it, or don’t care about it. Might want to learn about addition if your going to major in mathematics.

So like many people i’ve received my character’s birthday present (second one actually) and it has come to my attention, that even for my first birthday, the experience scroll within was all but obsolete to my account. I have every profession above level 20 (actually I only have one under level 80 and that’s my level 35 guardian), and therefore have absolutely no use for this item. I was wondering if Anet would consider changing the item so that even a level 80 character could use the birthday experience scroll and gain 20 skill points. As it stands now i’m just going to have to destroy one of my birthday presents and I don’t think that’s very efficient.

i took 10 months off playing gw2 and when i came back i had 8 of those scrolls…
and 10 characters all over lvl 20…

then i deleted my least favourite character just so i could use a scroll.

so useful…

i still get minis for my 12 characters birthdays in guild wars, those actually feel like presents.

these scrolls are almost pointless.

They’re gifts…. Free…..

It would be nice to give us skill points. However skillpoints can be turned into gold (weapons, clover fails, etc). So I’m sure that anet had the economy in mind.

I get that it stinks you can’t use it, but it is a really cool item for a lot of people, and it is never ever cool to complain about a gift.

Actually, using an experience scroll on a level 1 character will get you to level 20. With 16 skillpoints. You can use these skillpoints for mystic forge recipes. I used all 8 experience scrolls I had to get 77 Mystic Clovers that I needed for my Legendary (2x the 10 clover recipe + 4x the 1 clover recipe).

If your recipe fails you get t6 mats or lodestones, which are also nice.

I wish I had more of these scrolls… they’re so useful.

Old thread but i’m only concerned now, i’m playing since early 2013, i got 5 characters lvl 80 and 2 are 40-60, i’ve just got 2 Experience Scroll for my two first birthdays and, really, i don’t know what to do with them.

No news from ANet about this ?

Those scrolls are just worthless and have been given to (most of) players way too late.

It’s probably to encourage players to buy more character slots.

Delete them? :P

I buy new character slots from time to time and they’ll useful. I still need to do the personally story for Salads and Norns so I’ll be using a couple of my scrolls for that when I’m bored. If you ever decide to delete a character or get another slot it’s nice, even if you’re just parking them at a JP chest for Silver Doubloons.

What am I going to do with 9 Queen Jenna minis? It’s just something extra :p

Odds are good for a new playable race. Odds are lower for a new profession. There are going to be uses. Whether it is worth it to keep the space occupied until then is up to each person.

Better than nothing, but these birthday gifts were underwhelming. I still have toons that I created during Beta who haven’t opened their presents because what’s the point? Compare this to the anticipation and excitement of opening a birthday present in GW1.

I have to agree that the reward here doesn’t fit with the reason for it. Since you’ve played your toon for a year it seems unlikely that you need to level a new toon to 20. I agree with others that 20 levels in general would be great. If we go to dream-land, I’d rather have one gift of exploration instead. Remember, I said I was dreaming. I have world completion on 1 character and I don’t know if I could ever muster up the courage to overcome the tediousness of doing another. So ya, THAT would be a gift worth giving to someone who’s played your game for a year.

I’ve used 1 or 2. Have more in my bank. I’ve only got 1 <20 character that it’d benefit. And I have 8 characters. These are great for players who created 1-2 characters at launch and played only those characters. But for many of us they’re worthless.

Should be auto 1-20 (as it is) unless the character is already over 20, then it’s +10 levels. This way it’s useful for more people.

Can’t add much more than to just agree. I have 6 80’s and 2 over 40’s (one each profession of course) so I have no use for them at all. And it seems counter-intuitive that you’re given multiple identical mini’s when you are assumed to have multiple characters already, making all but the first redundant.

I mean, it’s better than nothing and it’s a nice gesture but it does feel like my grandmother just gave me six of the same Cosby sweaters for my birthday, in the wrong size.

Yes, I agree the gesture is appreciated. Buuuuuuuut, I think some more thought should go into what is being given. Sometimes less is more, as long as it’s useful.

+20 level would make more sense.

As a player who only have one maxed out main and all the alts at level 1 just for none stop spvp… The scroll helped me alot , I now have 5 level 80s .

So I believe there are still more players like me, regardless, +20 levels still makes more sense

Even plus 5 levels would be welcome. With the reasonable caveat that you can’t raise your character level above the maximum level you have already achieved. In other words, your first level 80 character can’t benefit from this.

Oh, and thanks for the good laugh Wasbunny!
