Facebook 1mil like achieve
Stating players will get the achievement is yet again vague. Could they elaborate more. Its so annoying. So im going on a cruise for half this month. Will i have to log on the day they hit 1 mil or i just have to log in once in july. kitten they beat around the bush way too often and obviously didnt learn with personal space. Im an achievement hunter hence this post.
Uhh I’m pretty sure they will mail you the items rather than have you wait Lion’s Arch.
By all means complain about Anet but at least have some good reason to it. kittening that they’re ‘vague’ isn’t just good enough.

You missed the point of the post. If it hits 1mil on july 20th i wont be around. So anyone who doesnt log in on july 20th misses it? Vague explainations of things are something businesses typically avoid but anets pretty good at it

They wouldn’t punish people like that.
The expectation is that they would filter all active accounts that were created before X date and they would reward it to them

Nice assumption. Ill revisit if your wrong. You just validated the fact that they leave us to predict what they are going to do next and its quite tiring with people that want to keep up but have jobs and busy lives.
I’m pretty sure they will reward everyone if the million mark is reached. That’s how I read it anyway.
I know it sounds dumb im bringing this up about this particular instance. But they have done this repeatedly. The fact that they even say “If we reach our goal of 1,000,000 Likes on Facebook before the end of July, everybody who logs into Guild Wars 2 – veterans and new players alike – will get these in-game rewards:” leaves it open to debate when “logs into” means something.

If I’m wrong that would probably be the least of your concern, or mine.
Anet would have a kittenstorm on their hands.

Well you can’t log into the facebook page of Guild Wars 2. You can access it, but you can only log into your Facebook account. I don’t think they mean that.
I’m sure it means log into Guild Wars 2. If they reach 1,000,000 hits, everyone in game who logs into game will get rewarded.
I actually think it’s pretty clear.
So your basically saying. After liking them the other day to do my part. If they get to 1mil on july 20th. When i will be in the atlantic and cant log on. I will not get the achievement. I wont be back until august, or do you think it will go for several weeks or permanently.
It’s certainly possible you won’t get the achievement if you can’t log in. That was the case of other temporary achievements, such as the fireworks.
In other words Anet really has no way to link your Facebook account to your Guild Wars 2 account. Anyone can like them, get friends to like them.
There is, however, the possibility that some reward for this will be mailed to you in which case if you log in earlier in July, you still might get it.
And the point of this post. Which you validate. Is its all up to our assumptions. Nothing is clear which would be positively received if ANET would explain clearly. Thats all im saying.

I’m sure as the date gets closer Anet will fill us in. I hardly think that we need to know right now, when we’re still 600,000 likes away from 1,000,000.
I know you’re personally frustrated by this, but I’m sure more information will be forthcoming.
Gw2 facebook page has 920k likes though. Hmmm. Cant be long if thats accurate. 600k will take a few weeks though.

Check again buddy.
Just need 80k more – gogo ANet!
On the other hand if you stopped preventing people from commenting on your Facebook page some might not even leave. I for sure left a couple of months ago when all of the sudden I wasn’t able to comment on your posts anymore.
Am I the only one a bit perturbed by the fact ANet just seem to be bribing it’s playerbase to get it more likes on Facebook?

At least they havent spent $630,000 on this.
They must realize that the nerfs from the 25th have driven players to other classes or other games. The fanboi’s are posting “THANKS FOR THE GREAT JOB!!!!!” like usual after each change. But they see the need to reevaluate their actions given the feedback.
If I thought "hmmm, it cant be that bad.., " I’d start with something exactly like a “facebook likes” program that’s easy, doesn’t grant any significant game changing incentives and allows me to feel better about what was done.
And yes, the term bribes fits perfectly.

I was…
They wanted me to play longbow Ranger but I now play Path Of Exile instead…
GG Anet…especially that fantastic ‘balancing’ team you got…
Don’t be too smug every class will get it in the neck sooner or later…

Perturbed? I think I’d use the word “annoyed” as in: it’s annoying that ANet would want to distort Facebook’s measurements in this way. Maybe a better word would be “sad”.
Surprised? No.
They are missing “likes” from my guild since all but one of us have not and never will use Facebook.
Happy to support ANet in many ways (and have on a weekly, on-going basis). This is not one of them.
-I’m sure they will hit their “mark”.

Honestly, kitten near every company does something like this.
And why not? It creates free publicity at pretty much zero effort from your fans and it does not hurt any of them.

Ummm okay.
Facebook is all about advertising. This is a form of advertising. Rift did the same thing. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen other games do it too…I seem to remember (but can’t swear to) TSW doing something similar.
This is a form of advertising and it’s pretty much what Facebook is for. A company that’s advertising tries to get people to sign up for it’s newsletter, or did in the old days. Today they try to get people to like their Facebook page. It’s logical, simple business sense.
Distort Facebooks measurement? Really? Measurements of what?
Is this any different from Facebook games giving rewards to people for getting other people to play or friend them in that game?
I think you’re attributing some kind of purity to Facebook that simply doesn’t exist.
All companies advertise. Facebook was made for that, and centers around that. Only the naive think Facebook is “social media”. It is, and has been since day one, nothing more than a way for a company to get information about you so they can advertise to you.
Simply put:
There are 3 ways companies approach Facebook.
1) Have a “presence” and the “likes” are initiated by customers.
2) Troll for “likes” by rewarding them or otherwise artificially increasing them.
3) Falsify what a customer is “liking” so they can sell the site, along with the site’s “likes”.
I would have hoped ANet stayed with number one.
I’m disappointed they are with number two.
That was what I was expressing. Any assumptions otherwise are mistaken.

I’d be disappointed if any company that I supported didn’t take the opportunity to advertise where they could. This is a form of advertising, nothing more.
Why be disappointed with a company for advertising their product? They’re using limited resources to get the word out. Surely that’s what most companies do.

There’s a big difference between legitimate advertising (which companies in the first bucket do) where the response is following a link to facebook, and “we’ll give you a discount or freebie if you facebook like us”.
It’s an exploit, to increase facebook “likes” beyond what’s earned.
An exploit. Enough said.

It’s not an exploit. For decades companies use inducements to get you to use them. Banks offered toasters for opening accounts with them. What does a toaster have to do with banking.
Presumably, people who don’t like the game aren’t going to say they like it just to like it. And if they’re willing to do so what is the problem.
Let’s pretend a friend of mine doesn’t like the game, but I ask him to like it for me (which I haven’t). Who cares? What’s the big deal? Who is negatively affected by this? The people who care about what he likes?
This isn’t even a storm in a teacup. It’s a drizzle in a thimble.
Nonsense. Here, bring me a new subscriber and you get a pen. Or the next 10 magazines free, or a calculator – this type of advertising has been around for a looong time. You host the sales-party, be it plastic utensils or undergarnments – bring all your friends, you get 10% off.
This is just spreading the word, nothing more nothing less.
Not that I am personally fond of facebook in any case, but that’s a different story. If it helps them to get some new customers I’ll be happy.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
“This isn’t even a storm in a teacup. It’s a drizzle in a thimble.”
I don’t believe anyone here is trying to create a storm. At least those doing nothing more than objectively expressing their feelings/values.

Saying a company shouldn’t try to get people to go to their facebook page, and or suggest it to friends is borderline ridiculous.
What values? Getting people to notice their product, or perhaps recommend it? This is what every single company does as far as I can tell. I’m not sure how this is somehow skewing Facebook.
Everyone is free to like the site or not, because no matter what any individual does, they’re going to hit 1 million regardless.
Vayne, this will be my last response to you because you seem to be determined to create drama where there is none. I don’t understand what appears to be the need to create misinterpretation, implication or assumptions. Feel free to have the “last word” as there is no argument here.
I, (and I believe others), have merely expressed feelings of disappointment.
As I said in my original post, I am sure ANet will hit their “mark”.

I get that you’re saying people are expressing their disappointment. I just don’t understand what exists to express disappointment over.
If I saw a commerical on TV trying to sell a product and they offered a free whatever for signing up for something, I wouldn’t be disappointed. I don’t see anything to be disappointed over. This isn’t some sort of election and Anet is trying to pork barrel for votes. Because they’re not competing directly against anyone.
I’m not sure what they’re supposed to have done wrong here.

Ever notice that radio stations run these amazing contests, which to win you have to listen all day to have the opportunity to compete for a very rich prize? And that they only run them during ratings week, during which an objective third party makes objective measurements of how many listeners each station has, which in effect determines what they can charge for advertising?
That’s gaming the system, to inflate the measured number of listeners, which inflates the price advertisers are charged all year long. While “everyone does it”, in egregious cases that little ethical voice in my head says the radio stations are just plain cheating the advertisers.
On a scale of ethical (I run advertising whose response is click on my company’s Facebook page, and once on that page I invite you to “like”), to unethical (I have a page that says click here if you like Obama and another place if you don’t, each of which puts a like on a generic-named page which after it accumulates enough likes is sold to the highest bidder), what GW2 is doing is definitely within the rules and leans toward the ethical.
But those likes drive viewership and visibility toward GW2’s page. In competition with other companies’ pages. They’re being bought, not earned.

Another question is how many other games that are “competing” or in the same genre are doing the same or similar things. Should a company kitten itself by staying away from doing that?
200% magic find boost? Time to farm some Barracudas!
If I’m wrong that would probably be the least of your concern, or mine.
Anet would have a kittenstorm on their hands.
Wouldnt be the first puppystorm they have because of ambiguity and obviously dumb choices on their part with various achievements or deadlines.
Given the fact that they often go “/shrug too bad for you” in those cases, I understand that people are concerned.
how many likes they have now?

925,881 and counting!
We’re almost there, less than 75k to go!

You don’t need facebook, just go there, it’s pretty much on the top under the main banner/picture.

was hard to spot at first tks: 926.025 likes its a close number.
When I saw the announcement a few minutes after it came out here I took a peek – 913k.
Around 7k the first day and another 6k so far – if it keeps up like that the goal should be reached in two weeks.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
930,260 likes – only 70k more to go!

Yeah, I read “everybody who logs in” as meaning that you have to log in to actually receive rewards for this promotion. As in, you’ll only be able to use them or physically access them inside the game world.
Almost 936k, slowed down a little bit.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
938k now, I don’t know – I have a bad feeling about this.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
