Failed Events
Failed events happen all the time. If something fails, more often than not the NPC’s go away to regroup and the event restarts at a later time.
Other times, failed events revert to the previous event in a chain.
i.e. failing to hold Arah gates opens up the defense of anchorage chain, which will end up with the assault of Arah.

I’ve experienced a number of failed events. Mostly in higher level zones. Generally events ping/pong back and forth, but some have different outcomes.
There’s a risen chicken event in Malchor’s leap. If you destroy the risen chicken coops on time, you get a different event following it. If you fail the event, and don’t destroy the risen chicken coops you have to deal with a risen chicken swarm. So which event you get in that case depends on whether you complete the event or not.
The jumping puzzle Morgan’s Spiral in Caldeon forest can’t be accessed if you fail the event that takes place there, which happens some times.
Events all over Orr can be failed – take the Temple of Grenth in Cursed Shore as an example. I’ve seen it failed countless times simply because players can’t keep away from the stairs and before you know Keeper Jones is as dead as an NPC can be.

Want to see failed event? Go Grenth, mobs spawning on top of extremely weak npc(event though players block the only way in) and killing him before most players can see them thanks to culling.
I failed an event and they sent me back to GW1.
Do events ever fail? Do events ever FAIL?
Grenth has failed the last 6 or 7 times I have attempted it. The Shelter’s gate event fails frequently nowadays…it’s like the game incorrectly assesses the number of players and spawns an unstoppable horde of champions and vets.
I would say Temple of Balthazar is failed 3 or 4 times for every time it succeeds.
Lol, I failed the Queen Mosquito event in Caledon Forest several times soloing it on my newly created thief. It’s timed, and I just couldn’t kill her quickly enough alone.
There’s a spider one in Kessex I think it is. If you fail, the spider eats the NPC.
And a drake one in Bloodtide where the npc gets digested for being..basically an idiot.
do world bosses ever fail? like what if few people show up to a dragon fight and everyone dies, what happens? is the dragon just standing there waiting for some poor sap to come along or do they just fly away?

Southsun events are a great example of what a failed event looks like and the after effects. I think they are going to take this type of failed event and put it on events that have no fails mainly the dragon. I would love to see what happens if ppl failed to defeat a world boss dragon.

Maybe there are two such events but the spider one sounds more like the one in Harathi Hinterlands. The spider being Gargantula.
You can’t really fail the drake event but there is more than one successful outcome. If you don’t kill the drake fast enough it digest the idiot NPC and regains a big chunk of health, if you do kill it in time it spits the NPC back out and it becomes a vendor. There is no failure state for that event.
Ahhh yes the Harathi is the one I meant, I knew it was one of those two zones.
I must have misrembered the drake one. Or maybe I saw the timer go down too fast and just thought..meh..he’s an idiot, he doesn’t deserve saving ^^
When an event fails you get the reward anyway (I’ve never understood why) so maybe you saw more events fail but you thought not cause reward popped?

If you really want to know why you can search around the web a bit. The devs addressed that a couple of times and the reward for failed events is less than successful ones.
