Farming T6 Mats
Is the best option just to farm gold and buy mats?
It is the only option currently that lets you get the mats in a reasonable time frame.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.

For the most part, Yes
There are forge recipes out there that can convert cores → lodestones and T5 Fine → T6 Fine, but these usually are not cost effective so you should check first.

The best way to do practically anything in this game is to farm gold and buy off the TP.
IMO, it’s gone a bit too far and the game has moved a bit too close to real life where you “farm” money in a soul-destroying job to buy the stuff you really want.

That’s a great description of how things are. Well, at least I know where I stand, so I can adjust my strategy for that. Thanks.

Not the game just people’s mentalities.
Its only like that if your only focus is getting stuff you want using the quickest and most tedious means possible as apposed to just enjoying the game’s playable content and letting gold and mats come to you as you go. Then yeah you are laboring in a game like its a job, which could happen in even the most casual of MMOs.

Farm moldy bags. Do events in Orr.

Please don’t do this. You’ll ragequit eventually due to lack of actual loot.

That’s true to a point, but it’s gone so far that if you don’t farm you’re looking at years to complete some of these things. That’s a lot of dedication.
When I was playing in around November 2012, I figured that at the rate I was playing and getting drops, it would take me more than 3 years to get a legendary weapon, and things were A LOT cheaper then.

If only I could really tell you guys how to make 8-12 g an hour farming Orr :P
In the meantime, my sig can suffice

HA!! It used to be easy to make that in Orr. Then ANet nerfed everything in to the ground…even now, Cursed Shore is a deserted compared to what it was a year ago.
If you have spare laurels, then 1 laurel = 3 random T6 mats at the vendor. Has saved me quite the headache of grinding on occasion! Lodestones I usually get from champ boxes though (or cores then convert up).
There are some hotspots with enough magic find – Armored Scales in the shores of Southson for eg, but buying them with gold seems to be the generally regarded and proven way to do it.
Ya please. I have been to Orr recently. I can kills stuff for hours and come away with porous bones and garbage. I can kill 20 mobs and get NOTHING. Unless you have a dedicated group going around hitting champs and world bosses, you’re not making anything there. And then, if you’re just farming that, why not farm somewhere nicer, like Frostgorge? How about just farming dungeons?
I’ve been working on my first legendary weapon. I have all I need except the 250 of T6 mats, and I farm a lot of champs. It boggles my mind how these can be so hard to come by. Anyway, I just do the Frostgorge train now because at least for every kill you’re guaranteed something. My MF has gone up drastically since I get lots of blues and greens to salvage. I’m making about 7g per hour on average and also getting maybe 2-3 T6 mats per hour as well. So, that is my suggestion to the OP.
Randulf is correct also. I have spent all my laurels recently on the T6 bags, and that’s helped quite a bit. But 1 laurel only gets you 3 T6 items. So including monthly 10 laurels plus daily, that’s 120 T6 mats… out of 2,000 that you need.. in one month.
Another way to get them is usually by making the clovers. If you do the 10 batch recipe in the mystic forge and are “unlucky” enough, you can get quite a lot that way. So, do your clovers ASAP if it’s a legendary you’re going for.

LOL I was actually counting on this to get some of the T6 stuff and ended up uncharacteristically lucky for me and got all the clovers in 7 of 9 hits on the 10 clover recipe and about 15 tries on the one clover recipe for the final 7. Ended up not scoring a lot of mats. :/
Well, what I have done for my legendary is not the most efficient way, but I couldn’t take the boredom and repetetivness of regular farming.
So here are some tips:
Farm and salvage your ectos 1st, if goin for legendary you will need the T6 dust anyways which by itself is more expensive to buy or same price as the ectos at times (per price flactuations), at the same time increase your MF so that the rest of your farming goes a bit faster. More MF = more greens instead of blues, more rares instead of greens, higher chances at Lootbag drops etc.
Make sure your guild runs +10% magic find bonus, ask guild members or just people around to put down the 15% MF banner (not the 5% or the 10%, use the 15%) for you as well when you farm.
Make sure you are always grouped up, more tags in your party means more loot hence more chances at T6.
Make sure you are on a populated PvE server before resets, guest if you need to.
Use yellow kits and salvage all possible rares, you will need lots of ectos for several purposses. 1st batch of 250 you should salvage. This will give you lots of luck to bump your MF while at same time it will give you lots of T6 dust which is necessary in some “gifts” for legendaries as well as T5 to T6 material conversions in MF.
Craft T5 rares. They are cheap to make, make a ton of them and break them down into various materials especially ectos for the above stated reasons. However, you should check prices on all the components and the rares 1st, as some are too expensive to craft in bulk and the prices vary, they flactuate and are not always the same.
Some good farming spots:
Orr temples at resets, Karka Queen, Frost Gorge champ loop, Queensdale Champ loop (though Queensdale has much lower yields due to low level of the map).
Dungeon Speed runs, COF, SE and TA are most efficient. Avoid Arah and the other dungeons as its too easy to screw up to the point where your speed run turns into a slow run.
Loadstones = 2 cores + 1 bottle of elonian wine + crystal (from the MF NPC) + 1 Crystalline Dust in the MF. Note: ! bottle of elonian wine is 25 silver, so unless the loadstones are 50 silver+ I wouldn’t bother with this method, but with the expensive ones, it is the better way to go.

That’s too bad… i guess LOL. I was “unlucky” and got a fair amount.
Come and join me on Blackgate server for some Frostgorge champ training! I’m there every evening and usually all weekend long :p (p.s. Blackgate is not my home server but they have a good train that goes 24/7).

This happened to me. When I needed clovers, I got half my T6 mats and piles of lodestones.
When I needed T6 mats…all I got was clovers…which I no longer needed…
Best way to farm T6 mats is to find the fastest way to make gold (other than gem purchasing) and then buy them off the Trading Post or make mystic clovers in the forge and hope you don’t get clovers or junk.
Drop rates for T6 mats are so low you’d think you’re after a precursor

I don’t know about years, but I guess it does depend on your pace. I am a huge anti-farm player, because of the reason you already stated. I already work a job, and don’t want to labor in game. I have been playing since beta pretty regularly and it only took me until about march to have everything for my first legendary. That being said, legendaries are an aesthetic choice not meant for the casual, it is supposed to take a ridiculous amount of time and resources.

The MF isn’t worth it but I agree with the part about the dust. All the legendaries are going to need 250 dust for the gift of magic.

The ecto is where the real value is in salvaging t5 crafted rares.
(edited by Leamas.5803)
The dust is the least costly though to purchase if you need it, at about 18s each, while the other T6 mats are closer to 30s each. Personally, for ecto I did the world boss train maybe 10 times. Including the regular champ train, I had my 500 ectos really fast. In fact, ectos were the easiest thing for me to attain. Once I had the 500, I salvaged the ecto until I had my 250 dust. Now that I need neither, I sell all my rares. Still need many other T6 mats though, so back to the train I go!

In standard PvE, you’re going to get around five T6 mats / hour. Maybe seven or eight if you run the champ train a little, but overall you are also fighting the stupidity of DR, which has never for a minute been about curtailing botting activity. Plus the materials you get are random and may include things you don’t need. For a legendary such as Bitfrost, farming the mats would literally take 3 years or so if you don’t make mystic clovers or such. Not because of a lack of time dedication, but because of Diminishing Returns crippling your ability to put more than 30minutes into a zone before you get punished for playing the way you want.

Yes, finally someone who gets it. This game is set up for you to NOT get stuff “the way you want”. I’m sorry, but I truly laugh at those saying “just play the game and you’ll get everything har har”. Not gonna happen without farming. Not in the time frame that would remotely keep anyone interested. If there were no ability to farm the mats, I would be uninstalling this game. Period. I don’t want to wait years to have the stuff that to me, is the end game stuff (not talking about ascended, which I consider to be useless since I don’t do fractals).
I think, personally, that one of the most broken things about this game is the extreme time difference between farming mats, and farming gold to buy mats. It is ridiculously easier to farm gold and just buy the materials, at which point why bother, just farm gold and buy your goal item outright. With the exception of Ascended gear, crafting is completely useless in this game beyond leveling a bit.

I feel ya. There’s a fine line between dedication and obsession. I will say though, GW2 WANTS to be a casual game. Its what pulled me in. Its the reason it takes 2 weeks of casual play to hit 80 on a character and you definitely get the feel that its one of those “easy to play, hard to master” metas. I was hoping this game would be about playing skill instead of gold sinks, but maybe they’ll do a ladder in PvP that rewards legendaries there. Gotta admit, I’m starting to find a whole lot more fun in “the other half” of this game anyhow. /shrug
Good hunting and I hope you reach your goals sooner than later

Yes… people’s mentalities has some to do with it. But the drop rates are so low that it’s pretty unrealistic to expect to get T6 mats via farming — and that’s what drives much of the need to champ train.
