There are several threads already talking about the feature pack and how it is. So instead of monitoring 16 different threads, lets try to consolidate them here. I have had a chance to play the updates yet, but am excited to check it out.
Right now I am having mixed feelings about it. Not so much the key farm nerf, or other mechanic nerf/buffs but the new level experience in paticular. The patch notes, and Wooden Potatoes videos make it seem like it’s actually a better system, with lots of cool things, but this thread (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Congratulations-Anet-1/first#post4381580) kinda makes me sad.
So what are your initial thoughts on the new feature pack? For those who have had a chance to play it?
I haven’t gone through everything in microscopic detail, but honestly it looks like a well-above average update. I like the new Trading Post UI. They fixed one of my biggest pet peeves in the game, which was the item name screw-up following the wardrobe release. They also did some nice tweaking finally for sets which were obviously underpowered before like Mesmer Scepter and Thief P/P. They finally did some modest, well-deserved warrior nerfs and ranger buffs.
My only issue with it is that it’s long past time we see things like new weapons and dungeons, but I imagine those are planned separately anyway. The leveling changes were also probably unnecessary and arguably harmful to the game, the same way the trait updates were during the April patch. They probably wanted to have the gaming experience united though, and I don’t really plan on leveling too many more characters so I’m not extremely upset about it.
(edited by Einlanzer.1627)
I was excited about everything until I went in and saw the low-level system for myself. That was not very exciting.
I love the new achievements and the TP (though I’ve heard it’s still a little buggy) but the low-level changes really really hurt the game.
So, I got a question.
Is it possible to take another crack at working on the Achievements listing so they can be organized better? I mean, we got more new categories and things getting shuffled around, can there be a bigger effort to . . . I don’t know . . . make it easier to find one specific one?
I can’t even load the game to check out the changes.
I really dislike the new patch. Way to change the game what it was before. I felt really excited to play this game over and over with my new characters. With these changes however…really reaching certain level to unlock story..Really? And seems that weapon skills are unlocked by leveling..I dont see how this is better for new players..
This game is exactly like any other mmo now!
TP is buggy as hell, slower and less intuitive. For every 1 good change is 1 wrong and 5 bugs.
About low level changes – I don’t know what they are smoking, but this is simply stupid.
New achivements – grindy grind for a grinding grinds?
Minipet changes – I need to check it, because I’m a little bit confused now.
Over all – I’m leaving this game again. Season 2 took me back, but that’s exactly the direction that I don’t want to follow in MMO. Was fun for this few weeks, but all fun things need to come to an end
I’ve been playing off and on since early beta. I tend to stop for a few months after each new Feature Pack “enhances” my game experience. Then I give it a go again because by then I’ve forgotten what was lost.
I guess I just find it odd, from a business model standpoint, that each new “Feature Pack” announcement produces fear and dread followed by anger amongst the assorted classes. Whatever happened to the concept of generating enthusiasm, or is that what the enhancement happy talk is supposed to accomplish?
Really, it’s almost as though the marketing department got ganked by a havoc group of tech thieves, and it’s not as though they even bothered to stealth, lol.
There are a few good things, but the amount of bullkitten and bugs are dragging this patch down to be far below average.
Overall I cannot say I like the patch. The benefits are overshadowed by the bad. Things like adding emphasis to rng and the TP (which imo are the worst aspects of GW2) via the collections achievements really take away from the good in this patch. It kinda reminds me of politics where they use good legislation to sneak in backdoor agendas.
This game is exactly like any other mmo now!
It seems that thats what the players wanted. At least here on the forums…Which really makes me sad.

Wow..really?
I thought this game was supposed to be different. This WAS great mmo..until this patch. I got impression from all trailers and interviews that this game is different and unique.
I purchased this game for a friend of mine to play along with me. The ‘new player experience’ has driven him off, telling me that the game is even more tedious and boring than before. As a result, I am also less likely to play the game. This isn’t new. A lot of members of my guild have considered leaving as playing alts is tedious. I know. I was playing an alt.
None of the logic behind the changes make sense to me. Level-gating abilities at later levels is a poor choice, and does nothing to ‘teach players’ how to play the game, just forces them into more tedium. To teach players how to play the game, provide tutorials and information as to how each class works, perhaps via a class-based tutorial mission. More content, not less.
If that’s not the goal, then it sounds like players get bored mid-range, in which case the solution isn’t to spread out already thinned options, but to (again) provide more options. They key word is more options. MORE options, not less. Not reduce the gameplay or delay it, but to show to the players that you’re willing to devote time and effort into making this game great. By this time, there should have been a middle-level questing overhaul to move away from the ‘great funnel’ model and towards one of better complexity and entertainment.

no, its what a focus group they did on new players in specific area wanted. Basically they created a solution for some of the bad players who left quickly, ignoring the good players who left quickly, and the people who didnt leave at all.
What do I think of the new patch?

It WAS different and unique. And thats what made it great. But every other week there was a new thread about how Anet needs to implement XYZ because thats what other MMOs do. I guess they were listening after all. But I won’t know first hand until I get a chance to play.
:O For some reason, my game looks uglier. WTF?
I decided to try leveling up a new character- human thief.
Leveling is really smooth, and quite enjoyable! A couple of hiccups regarding Veteran Dire Boars, and incorrect content pointers (pointing to level 11 content for a level 8 character vs the level 9 content), but fairly straighforward and an improvement.
HOWEVER
Upon completing my level 10 personal story, the little direction arrow, which I’ve been following faithfully for the past 10 levels or so pointed me to the Fields of Ruin portal in Divinity’s Reach.
Keep in mind I’m level 13 right then. So I follow along, ladee-da, and in Fields of Ruin, it points to Blazeridge Steppes. “New challenges await you in Blazeridge Steppes”
So I march my level 13 butt over to the portal- and now I’m stuck in a loop going back and forth.
The content pointer stuff might need some work- ‘cause right now it’s REALLY confusing.

Im really tempted to do that

its not the worse thing in the world, its just a lot less entertaining. Basically you just go around doing hearts and exploration with less skills/traits/weapon swaps/etc.
oh yeah down state unlocks at 5, but you wont get your 2 down skill till 13 and your 3 down skill till 19.
So what are your initial thoughts on the new feature pack? For those who have had a chance to play it?
The leveling isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. Its faster, if anything. And not just because there’s a stack of players trying it out. Most everything else is what I thought it would be, and not in a negative way.
The only thing I don’t like is having several billion commander tags in my face. edit: I also don’t like that my level 27 character that I’m currently leveling can’t collect the sp from the Wayfarer worm cave, and I’m not a fan of the other map changes to Wayfarer.

I thought you’d already done that.
(edited by zenleto.6179)
All this patch did was change 1-15 zones to tutorial zones, so people can relax into a character. They’ve greatly increased the speed of leveling. It took me an hour or so to get to level 7. So level 1-15 you level through super fast (or use a 20th level scroll if you have to) and most of the major unlocking is done.
But what this has done is given people more information about what happens when they level.
Anyone who doesn’t think this was necessary hasn’t spent much time on player helping players forums.
the way quests are locked until you’re two levels or so above the required level sucks…having to grind killing a million boars in the forest for 1 xp a kill to get the ten levels before continuing your story…it’s not very appealing.
I do like the new way with the levelling rewards, as well as the new achievements theyve added..
The TP is also pretty good, once the bugs are shaken out it’ll be easier to tell if it works well or not.
Overall the good equals the not so good.
with levelling my alts, it feels like my hand is being held even though Ive levelled 7 characters to 80 already..
after having 3 characters levelled to 80, they should let the requirements for going into quests be lower so we can make it harder for ourselves and be a challenge rather than be stuck in a forest killing random things for exp..
anyhow, tha the only bad thing Ive seen so far, everything else seems okay so far.

Actually they did more than that -.- Personal Story is now reward, Your weapon skills unlocks when you level up, not when you kill mobs with them. Like really? They changed the entire game
I shouldnt level up to play my personal story.

it aint that fast.
Also it feels a lot more boring.
they tied too much to leveling now, so the game feels more like a leveling race than before.
1-15 is too long for tutorial zones. Many games with tutorial zones make them skippable. (mostly because they are some of the most boring content in the game)
moving the story to every 10 levels is a big mistake imo. Makes the game feel way more like grind then story then grind then story.
also the tutorial is essentially up to 36 now. What was once level 15 is now closer to level 36 including traits.
i think these changes may allow them to keep some new players, but i think they have sacrificed others who will find it grindy and tedious.
First of all, I think it’s pretty funny that you didn’t include “leveling” as one of the categories in your patch feedback threads, since you totally redid what leveling means. So I’m posting this here because it makes the most sense out of the available options.
I have been playing this game for just over a year now. VERY few mmo’s hold my attention for that long. This was a rare and welcome exception. I liked the combat, I liked the world, I loved the personal story quests.
But this patch makes me so angry, I’m tempted to ignore all of that and play something else. Forever. My biggest complaint is how you’ve changed the levels at which skills are unlocked. Weapon skills unlocking with use made a lot of sense, since anyone will get better with a weapon with mere practice. Now, instead, you unlock skills across ALL weapons, according to your level, no matter what you have equipped. I now have to get to level 10 before all of my skills are usable. And the utility skills are even worse! You have discouraged every player you have from making new characters. Sales on character slots are going to drop really quickly, you watch. You called it being “rewarded” for leveling, but it’s not a reward if we used to just HAVE it.
And then there’s the story quests. This was the big thing that set you apart from other mmo’s: your rich story mode. And now, new players won’t even get to enjoy that until level 20! So before they get to see the most important aspect of your game, they have to GRIND for it. Honestly, what were you thinking? I’ve heard that it did well in China, and that’s how the game was released there. But if that’s true, let me tell you something: They haven’t seen OUR game! They’re not comparing! WE are, and we want it back. I loved this game because it never felt like grinding. I leveled when I crafted, I leveled when I did story missions, I leveled when I gathered, I leveled when I did literally anything. It was so nice to find an mmorpg that didn’t just make me kill the same enemies over and over again to make a little number go up. It never felt monotonous And by adding these level restrictions, you have taken that away.
I may or may not continue playing, but I can say this for certain: I’m not buying any more gems while the game looks like this. You will get no more money from me. I hope that mistakes are learned from, and reversed.
I shouldnt level up to play my personal story.
You pretty much had to do that initially before the new patch. It even gave a recommended level, to do your personal story at. You had to be level 80 to complete your personal story.
The problem is simple: most did not bother to finish off their personal story. They took it for granted. And now they are screaming about it?. That is very odd.
Yes, doing alts will be a chore to do though.

Flood Control: Please wait 1800 seconds between posts!
The real issue is that this underlines Anet’s vision and direction with the game.
No single change, by itself, would cause me to quit – as I have already leveled 7 characters to 80, and my 8th, an Enginner, is already 35 – just about past all this non-sense.
The problem is that it really highlights Anet’s philosophy towards game design in general, and I don’t like it.
Instead of releasing new content and revamping old content to be more challenging and rewarding, they are just looking for ways to lure new customers into the gem store.
This patch, more than anything they say, really shows where their mind is at in terms of game development.
The game isn’t getting better – it’s getting dumber.
/Time to move on.
:O For some reason, my game looks uglier. WTF?
I also felt that it looks completely fuzzed over compared to before, a few people agreed with me thinking the game looked fuzzy now, and others said they noticed no change. My GPU is an Nvidia GT 555M, yours? I may try updating my display drivers later, too tired at the moment since I was up all night trying to get a lot of last minute stuff in before this doo doo stain of a patch.
This new update really makes me want to stop playing this game, since this game feels like every other game. I feel bad for spending my money to this and all those gems.
I actually felt good to support devs and buy gems. Since I thought: Hey I’m helping them.
And now this…changing the whole game. I thought this supposed to be new and different mmo not like any other.

How is it like every other game? Because it slows down the way people get new stuff. Dynamic events are still there. Scaling still exists. The active combat really isn’t any different.
All this system does is make it so leveling feels rewarding to people. That’s why they did it. To return to the game for new players a feeling of progression that’s been missing.
That doesn’t make it like every other game. No one can steal my node, still. No one can steal my kill. I still get experience and loot if I participate.
Putting in a tutorial (which this game lacked) isn’t making it like every other game. It’s putting in a tutorial.
I don’t have any alts under L20 right now, so I dunno how the new leveling will compare to the old, but I do feel some trepidation about it. I really liked how you earned weapons skills based on how often you used that weapon- that had a nice flow to it, and I’m dissapointed that has changed.
I’m also a bit miffed that they’ve changed personal story from a reccomended level to an unlock level, I liked squeeking through some of my PS at a lower level. Although I can see how it does limit the number of people completely ignoring the reccomended level, and then complaining that their next PS step is ‘too hard’. But now it feels a bit like I am at loose ends while I get up to 50 so I can take my alts on their next round of story (I tend to go in batches…)
I think the game mechanics demo/tutorial bits in the starting zones are clever.
I shouldnt level up to play my personal story.

I dont know really, doing hearts and then few stories didnt even feel bad.I liked actually sometimes just trying to see how fast i could rush first parts without leveling much. It was challenging at the same time and fun.
I might not like new patch and new desings. But I have to say that they really changed the game and i dont feel im playing same game again. This feels more worse than another mmo’s now. Personal story is now reward we should enjoy just because we leveled up. Who cares about the story and what devs wrote for us. Reward means exp and items so lets forget story.

The active combat is the same, but you’re going to be doing a lot more of it than you used to have to in order to gain progress. This game wasn’t a mob-grinding engine before, and now it will be.
Also, maybe the tutorial helps, but it was pretty annoying that it dragged me by the nose to go “learn how to dodge” when I’ve been playing the game for over a year. For god’s sake, where’s the option to turn the tutorial off?

A heart now gives you about a third of a level in the new 1-15 experience. I played for an hour, got to level 8. I’m honestly not really seeing a problem here.
Almost every game teaches people how to play it. Guild Wars 2 did this badly. Now it does it better. It’s called taking one for the team.

Firstly, to earn new skills and “moves” you have to level up. Before you just used weapon not levelled your character.
How its reward to get to do your personal story when you could get it in first place. I thought it made game more interesting it had “quests” that were interesting and then you could do stories that felt like events just made for you. Now you just have to level up your character to even touch them. I dont see how this would bring people back to game.
Yeah about nodes. Every game that has similar gathering has also “own” nodes.
I thought this game had pretty good tutorial already, we also got instruction manuals! And I dont like idea someone guiding you all the time how you do things. It doesnt feel rewarding, it feels more better when you actually figure it out yourself.
To be fair, I remember getting in to a much heated debate over at the dungeon forum. And one poster told me “that some players just spam 1 all the time, and some don’t even know how to do that” or something along the lines of that.
Well if its tutorial people wanted then add that then, not change the whole game
NVM.
No opinions toward this…

Actually the story was causing problems, because people assumed it was “the” quest line. People would come into the forums and talk about how they weren’t high enough level to do the next story. A lot of people felt they weren’t leveling fast enough because they didn’t realize that they had to do other stuff too. This sets the pace by giving people hearts and events first, and adding the story in, so they know it’s not the “main thing” in the game. The game is centered around open world and dynamic events, and the story is a sideline.

Well its just basic story not actual story, I thought living world events are real story.
Really? If i thought it was difficult I just stopped and tried to figure out what was wrong. Story shouldnt be sideline.
Guild Wars 2 isnt what it was supposed to be. I want my old game back that I enjoyed. I dont want this new game
Haven’t tried leveling yet. I don’t have a problem with them changing stuff if it really does help new players stay around.
The thing I was so excited about & so disappointed in, is the collections. The rewards are so. freeking. stingy. They are so hesitant to make new skins IN GAME. Especially with things like the exo collection & Spirit Weapons Crafter. The Spirit Weapons Crafter back piece doesn’t even resemble the look of the spirit weapons. After getting 5 500+ gold weapons you should be getting a full set of spirit armor. Not a bad reskinned back piece.
The new TP UI is horrible. Especially when it comes to selling. What was before nicely on each tag is now all crammed together and looks horrible. It makes me think that someone absolutely wanted to prove that they do deserve to keep their job and went what they thought was above and beyond. Well, they don’t deserve it. They have no organizing skills. A homemaker would have done a better job. Of course by now many have already discovered that most searches you do in TP crash your game.
Overall – they made more complicated and more like other MMOs something that was already complicated enough but at the same time different enough to not be a cookie-cutter – what probably attracts the GW player base to start with.
Also, why in the world did they make it so a higher level can’t find lower level gathering equipment in lower level areas? If I want to re-specialize my lvl 80 in another craft, do I have to use only mithril pickaxes to mine copper ore? How totally and absolutely dumb is that?
Overall? Very displeased with the patch. VERY displeased. I might take another year of playing break and definitely not spend the money I had put aside on anything in the gem store right now. The only good thing I can find is the graphics – they are breathtaking right now. But I don’t play GW2 to just walk around admiring landscapes and seascapes.
Overall. I’m underwhelmed.
The changes to the TP just made it more complicated and frustrating.
I consider the changes to new char’s leveling to be detrimental to enticing new players to play the game and/or for old timers to roll alts.
This now just feels like a complete grindfest. One of the reasons (main being money) that I left FFXI. I’m actually angry with the levelling system and wondering how it helps new players?
Things are locked to stupid levels, condi damage from mobs doesn’t happen in starter areas any more. You have an awkward break between the character creation story part and the beginning of actual story. You can’t explore maps until level 15. You can equip an offhand until a certain level. You can’t gain skill points despite standing right by the commune/whatever.
Everything is a chore now. Your skill 5 on weapon doesn’t unlock until level 10, elite is 40 and oh, underwater combat is level 8. Yes this is super helpful and rewarding.
Roll it back. We’re not China when it comes to grinding.
if the game wouldnt crash everytime i try to do something besides display my amazing purple commander’s tag… i might have some feedback.
BEST DAY EVER!!!
For so long I wanted medium armor that was not a dress, MASSIVE TICK!
Collections etc. whoot vertical progression, this is what Anet promised. A game where your choice on how you play does not leave you behind… vertical progression…. Now if only the next patch brings back the historical achievements so I can go back and tick them all off as well :P
The rest of the pack… did I say I don’t have to wear a dress anymore!?!?!
tp is a little bit cluttered. I wish they shrink some of the border so I can see the item list better
