So, thankfully, I had a positive experience on my town clothing refund. While I’m still not super ecstatic, I feel the refund given was fair.

I can also say, while my refund request was not rude, my refund ticket did express my discontent with what they had done, and it was more on the irritated side than the extremely formal and pleasant side.

The support team answered and fulfilled my refund request very early this morning — on Easter. So respect must be given there. I wouldn’t expect anyone to be working with tickets a little after midnight PDT on Easter Sunday (whether Christian or otherwise is unimportant — it’s not only a weekend, but late at night, a holiday, etc.).

The following is what items I requested to have refunded:
1 Cook Outfit (700 gems)
2 Endless Country Lace Clothing Tonics (200 gems ea.)
1 Endless Cherry Blossom Clothing Tonic (200 gems)
2 Endless Casual Hoodie Clothing Tonics (200 gems ea.)
1 Endless Designer Hoodie Clothing Tonic (400 gems)
3 Endless Khaki Clothing Tonics (150 gems ea.)
2 Boxing Gloves (300 gems ea.)
1 Endless Layered Vest Clothing Tonics (200 gems)
2 Endless Riding Clothes Tonic (200 gems ea.? <Strange item>)
1 Medium Krytan Armor Set (500 gems)
————————————————————————————————————————————-
Total: 4250 gems

Stuff I didn’t expect to have refunded, but requested anyways:
1 Sport Sunglasses (150 gems) (A duplicate: I had bought two)
1 Aviator Sunglasses (150 gems) (A duplicate: I had bought two)
1 Phantom’s Hood (200 gems)
————————————————————————————————————————————-
Total: 500 gems

I received 4810 gems in the refund, and I was expecting 4750 gems to break even. The variance of 60 gems may or may not be due to the weirdness of the Riding Clothes Tonic.

Obviously the most desired outcome would have been to not have this happen to town clothing in the first place, but for the most part it feels as if town clothing had never happened (with exception to my Dragon Emblem shirt — still upset about that).

So, if anyone is hesitant about submitting a ticket for a refund, this was my experience and outcome.

I’m wondering why I have 2 Riding Clothes tonics when I only bought one set of the riding pants which I see are now the default pants. I admit I LOL’d at that because so many people hated those pants and now we are stuck with them.

Still working out what i will request to get refunds on. Is there a time limit for when we can get them? I forgot how ugly and brown some of it was!

I read somewhere there was a time limit (early July, I think) on the request for a refund, but I can’t find it at the moment. It was a thread started by Anet.

I think the Riding Clothes tonic combined the shoes and gloves to make an additional Riding Clothes tonic (in addition to the pants). Or something weird like that. Who knows.

Well, they did disable the BL armor merchant due to some issue, perhaps it’s been giving out more tonics than people were supposed to get?

I’ve not yet gotten my refund.

I fully expect them to be working this weekend, and I don’t care if it’s a holiday for some of them. They went into this knowing that they were going to get a lot of upset people wanting their refunds, and went ahead with it anyway. So be it. We owe them no loyalty or pity for the repercussions of their own actions.

Besides, I doubt anyone stuck in customer relations has any belief in a kind, caring god after their first week on the job. No religious holidays for them!

I’m still waiting on mine as well, but I’m surprised to see them working on the refund. I only bought two costumes (wintersday and halloween). I asked them to refund the wintersday. I’d ask them to refund the halloween too (because both are fairly unpleasant to me without being able to mix and match), but I got the broom with it, which I’d prefer to keep.

I was going to request a refund for my chef outfit. Then once I put it on, I realized it was the same function as “vanity” in other mmo’s. Basically, It goes on over whatever you’re wearing. So I can be a freaking chef in combat! Crap yeah!

Anyways, glad to hear your refund went well! Obviously not everyone’s outcome was as pleasant as mine, so I’m glad to hear yours went well and hopefully others’ will also.

This is that new sound. Ya’ll ain’t ready.

I got my refund (550 gems) for two of my old one piece items and I go on today and I stillhave them in my guardian’s inventory.

Is this supposed to happen? were they supposed to take the stuff off my account I asked for a refund for?

Am I allowed to sell the two tonics to the TP and get more gold? Or is that taking advantage and exploiting?

I don’t want to be banned suspended for exploiting…

I received 4810 gems in the refund, and I was expecting 4750 gems to break even.

That’s not a refund.

All you did was get gems back for something you originally put down cash for. 4750 gems… so that’s $59.38 ArenaNet ripped you off for.

If you’re planning to go on a $60 micotransaction spending spree, well I guess this all works out for you. But for those of us who don’t intend to spend another cent in their online store this is nothing more than a Bait & Switch scam.

Now I know somebody out there right now is thinking, “Nuh-uh, you paid cash for gems! Not items! You bought gems just for the pleasure of having gems to look at, the items you bought later with those gems were just an afterthought!” If that it your train of thought, raise you right hand in the air, palm out, and slap yourself across the face.

Actually this is 100% completely wrong.

You paid GEMS for the outfits. You bought GEMS with cash. You did not buy outfits with cash.

I get gems for all sorts of reasons. For example, I get gems with achievement point chests. I’ve gotten 1200 gems so far, enough to buy two outfits.

The fact is, when you buy gems with cash, they’re spendable in the store for different things. There’s no way anyone could prove they bought just only and solely to buy outfits and in a court of law, legally, you’d be wrong. The gems are refunded, because the gems were the currency used to make the transaction.

Regardless of this, the changes Anet are making to the system benefit most of the people complaining about it.

Anet DID screw up in my opinion early on by introducing town clothes the way they did. They probably didn’t sell very well, because not everyone wants something just to stand around in town in. They probably could have sold much better.

The meshes for those town clothes are incompatible with existing armor, so they couldn’t just make them over. Not with five different races. The work would have been prohibitive and taken time away from working on other stuff that would benefit more people.

But had Anet actually left town clothes the way they were, because the whole subset of clothes was incompatible with anything else, Anet simply would have no reason to make any more town clothes ever. Those who had them could keep what they had, but for the life of the game they’d never get a single new item of town clothes.

The way it works after the change is that things that look like town clothes can now be introduced as armor skins, which means more people will buy them, every one can use them, and you can mix and match and dye them. What you’ve lost is the OLD town clothes, which were problematical.

What you’ve gained is a future where you can have far more town clothes that have less limitations.

Reread the mails carefully (unless you deleted them) and they should specify if they expect you to DESTROY the objects in question (doubt they will “take them” from your account, tho they MAY have altered them so you can’t sell or use them). If you deleted the email, I would respond to the refund ticket an ask before selling the items.

Or, they could have given us 5 Outfit slots instead of just the one. One for the head, one for hands, one for feet, one for chest, and one for legs. They could have let the old Town Clothes work in those new Outfit slots, and then gone ahead with the Outfit functionality from there.

Bang, everyone wins.

What we’ve lost is what we paid for and enjoyed. What we’ve gained is a serious belief that ANet can’t be trusted.

I logged on and found I had 550 gems more than before (so one was 350 and one 200 or 250 and 300 or any combination of two clothing parts and their original costs) and the two items I have asked to refund are sill around.

If its refunded and still in my inventory, then why can I still do this (Please Note: that I’m not going to sell it until I know its safe to do so):

Also I already heard from others that they already sold the items and didn’t think twice for the safety of their accounts.

This may sound stupid and is also the second time that I’m asking it.
I have never bought any gem with real money, because it’s not a model I want to support (I’m for the expansions route), but I spent my time earnig some gold and converting it to gems to buy something that has now been destroyed.
Am I entitled to a gems refund too? :S

Some of my purchases were gotten by gold to gems conversions only and somewere by gem cards at a Wal-Mart or Target. I made that clear in my ticket. Be honest and they will be nice enough to do for you what you need.

I think it is a good act that A-net has done in refunding people simply for the fact that they don’t like the items now. I really wasn’t expecting this and I think it is a nice gesture. I’m not sure many companies would give a refund after such a long time simply because you don’t like an item.

That’s not to say that I don’t think they messed up with the town clothes, they did, big time, but at least now they have gone a tiny way to make up for this.

I don’t have any town clothes (other than the default) but surely there was another way to go about changing things, like some of the idea’s people have mentioned in this thread, Ie town clothes don’t ‘fit’ well with armours so why not just keep them both separate and also have tonics split into area’s (:/ though that would take a lot of space up).

It is absolutely astonishing to me how much press Town Clothes are getting now that they’ve been changed. I never saw anybody use them, heard anybody talk about them, and I’ve never been inclined to buy them. Heck, the most I’ve heard about them has been “Man, let us wear Town Clothes in combat, bro!!”

Guess there’s always a hidden minority somewhere ready to get stepped on when something rather minor changes. Glad your experience was good, though.

Guess there’s always a hidden minority somewhere ready to get stepped on when something rather minor changes. Glad your experience was good, though.

Well, while I won’t try and argue that town clothing users were the majority (they obviously weren’t :P), I will say that on Tarnished Coast (and originally Crystal Desert) I saw people in town clothing all the time in cities.

I’m just glad that where the development team dropped the ball, the support team picked it up. Hopefully some others will have a little bit of their faith restored through a positive experience (although if they have a negative experience we’re interested in reading that here too — constructively).

And that is another reason why I felt the need to make a thread regarding the outcome of the refunds. I don’t feel like they cut corners with me or tried to scam me. Also, someone asked me earlier if I was going to go on a spending spree with $60 worth of gems — No, I’m not. I’m going to casually use them over the course of two years (or however long), which means less income for ArenaNet. It feels almost satisfying to know that the development of town clothing hurt Anet more than myself in the end. That isn’t meant to be a cruel statement — that is the way business practice should be in my opinion. If a company makes a mistake, it should cost the company more than the customer.

The only way I can see a gem refund being a bad thing is if you were planning on quitting the game, and, if that is the case, you should be asking for a cash refund.

Actually this is 100% completely wrong.

You paid GEMS for the outfits. You bought GEMS with cash. You did not buy outfits with cash.

You mean he bought gems, which were advertised as having the property of being able to be exchanged for outfits that functioned in a certain way, with cash. Those gems are no longer capable of being used for that specific advertised purpose.

You might want to hold off on claiming 100% wrong (or right) because its all a matter of how it is argued, the opinion of the judge (remember that legal interpretation is somewhat subjective), and (potentially) the opinions/attitudes of the jury.

There’s no way anyone could prove they bought just only and solely to buy outfits and in a court of law, legally, you’d be wrong.

Actually the proof is rather easy…for what purpose were the purchased gems used ? If they were used to purchase outfits then it is inherently proven that they were purchased to buy outfits because any given amount of gems cannot be used for more than one thing.

Again you might want to hold off on declaring whether or not someone would be wrong in a court of law. After all which state, which county within that state, which town in a given county, which judge within a given town, and what day in front of a given judge can result in somewhat different results.

TOS are not necessarily even binding in some regions.

Regardless of this, the changes Anet are making to the system benefit most of the people complaining about it.

I am not sure that you are qualified to determine what benefits another individual who states that he dislikes something. What benefit does someone who does not buy gems in the future because of the handling of this incident gain from the changes ?

They will only refund what you still have in your possession. If you have transmuted it, destroyed it, or otherwise no longer possess the duplicate, you are not eligible for a refund.
