Q:
Feedback on jumping puzzles during events
I know, I haven’t even tried it.
I used to like jumping, in things like Mario and Sonic, but online games, played on PCs/laptops are not the same as offline ones, played on consoles.
Also, I play on the US servers, despite living in the UK and have pretty severe lag and FPS issues, even when it comes to doing normal activities in the game.
So there is no way I would be able to do something like this.
I just know, in advance.
Maybe I could do it, if I turned my graphics down to lego brick mode, but who wants to do that, to a beautiful game like this?
I’ve just come to terms with the fact that I can’t do certain things and when I have finally got tired of the things I can do, I will only log for the log-in rewards, or not at all.
I think they should consider different people’s situations, but with the current prevailing attitude, in the gaming industry, I suspect that is a pipe dream.
So, the only real option is probably going to be to vote with our wallets, from now on.
One thing all companies need is money and that is obviously something we can choose to give them, or not.

Because of the Jumping Puzzle being required, I stopped even trying for Winter’s Presence. While I would have liked that item for one of my elementalists it is not getting this item that made me feel bad. The feeling that this game is moving from ‘fun for all’ into ‘be elite or be nothing’.
It’s the same concept involved anything in gaming, or life in general. Practice makes perfect.
If the OP is referring to Winter Wonderland, which i suspect they are, there isn’t actually any timing involved apart from waiting for the footstep present to spawn on the present climb segment. Everything else is simply a matter of memorizing and execution (with plenty of leeway). The snowflakes don’t break unless you stand on them for like 10 seconds which is a huge amount of time. The snow boulders at the end have plenty of time between them for you to move to the safe spot.
This puzzle is just a MASSIVE grind, and that’s intended by Anet to both drive up the price of Wintersday Gifts (to make them rewarding to the average player) and increase exclusivity of the winters presence shoulder piece, which both oncreases desirability to get it of players and increases likelyhood of buying gems (business perspective).

there is none for new players to go and take part in due to you having to be like a pro in order to make those jumps in a second or so.
I’ll start by saying this:
These puzzles (Mad King Clocktower and Wintersday wonderland) have been in the game since the first of these events, which were released 1 and 3 months after the game launched give or take a few days, and yet WE FINISHED them on that first try.
And trust me the game’s far easier to work out now, there were a ton of issues and glitches back then, and things do run smoother now compared to back in those days.
Plus you can always follow people that know how it works now, back then everyone was still learning it, and yet we made it.
So the “there’s nothing for new player”, “you have to be a pro to make those jumps” is bs.
People that complain and yet say “i didn’t even try” should pretty much refrain from posting, because if you didn’t try, you don’t know if its hard or easy.
If your computer isn’t up to spec, and yet you insist on playing it on high settings, don’t complain that it has poor performance.
Other people from UK (hey woodenpotatoes) play in the US servers and complete these events.
I’ve completed them my first tries on a computer that barely got to 20 fps on bare minimum settings, and i finished those puzzles back when they were first released. You wanna know how? Well i took time to solve the puzzle, and learn the steps, that’s it, its not that hard, Winter Wonderland is one of the easiest puzzles out there, and its doable in a couple of minutes.
Calling it grind is kind of a push, especially since its the most rewarding of the Xmas activities (10 gifts for a couple of minutes jumping).
If you want some tips to finish the puzzles: Use asura characters, they’re smaller so you can see the next step better, and they feel more agile, so its easier to control. Norn and charr feel more sluggish because they’re huge, so its easier to miss a jump in some situations, especially in those where camera control is key to landing the jump.
(My first character was a Norn, so i know the pains of larger characters)
Aside from that, i can only tell you to practice.

If they added another jumping puzzle, easier, less timing involved, it would be nice, but then it would just be another regular JP, there are already plenty, when was the last time you did them?
I like JPs, in fact I’ve completed them all! However even I think that this JP achiv is over the top!
The only purpose it serves is to be another gem store cash grab.

…how exactly is a jumping puzzle a “gem store cash grab”? There’s nothing you can buy on the gem store that will help you complete it.

If you can’t figure it out then there is no reason trying to explain it to you.

I think you meant to type “You’re right; the jumping puzzle actually isn’t a gem store cash grab”. Easy typo to make.

10,000 drinks is nothing to do with JP except it’s most efficient way to do it.

You forgot the bit about having your health freezing away so that if you don’t zip up along the snowflakes a lot faster than some want to go when judging their leaps, you will fail the puzzle. That’s the timed part.
I know the real reason you all don’t like the JP’s…
It’s because you all (and I) bought this game to play an MMORPG… Not Super Mario 5…
A few JP here and there fine. But I do think Anet is relying too much on “non-combat” options to make their content feel “new”…
But they forget that the whole point of MMO’s is to like… kill virtual creatures… not to figure out how to land on the next candy cane.
Theres no definition of what the people in an MMO have to be doing.
All an MMO requires is that its a game for more than 1 person.
If killing virtual creatures was the only aim, then thats all you would XP for.
People don’t realize the role of FPS in timed jumping puzzles (clock tower, winter wonderland, zephyrite puzzles). If you don’t have 20+ fps, you literally cannot run to the edge of a platform for that long jump. You jump too soon or you run off the edge or your direction correction didn’t go through.
I know this for a fact because I mastered clocktower and winter wonderland in a few hours in 2012. Then I lost my video card and was on integrated video in 2013. These were literally unplayable now. When people are saying they can’t do them and don’t even try, it’s not from lack of practice.
The really enraging thing was that the FPS drop was due to unnecessary particle effects.

I get your point but I have to actually disagree. I don’t want to get into a debate about semantics but I think I can make a point by asking you why you don’t play Second Life…
Second Life is a huge community of online players doing… random things but there is no lynchpin to tie it all together. In MMORPG’s, the lynchpin is the RPG aspect. The fact that you can “role play” and so I like to roleplay as a conqueror or knight or awesome bounty hunter usually though sometimes I can roleplay as a goat in goat simulator or a piece of toast or a surgeon even.
But if I play an MMORPG, there are certain expectations. Namely, that I will be killing virtual monsters to save virtual people. And that I won’t be doing this by doing timed JP’s all day long.
This is coming from someone who did get the JP achievement already… though I didn’t enjoy it that much.
I personally do not like the jumping puzzles during the special events, there is none for new players to go and take part in due to you having to be like a pro in order to make those jumps in a second or so. I think next time it would be great for there to be a jumping puzzle for those that enjoy trying to complete jumping puzzles but are just not fast enough to jump them like you have them now. Please think about it, not everyone can react that fast but still enjoys taking part in it. Without there being an easier one I for one will not be able to complete all the festival achievements due to this and I feel like I spent my money like everyone else so I should still get that chance also. Thank you for your time
You have had the chance, weeks and weeks of chance. Your logic would force anet to never release anything that someone “who spent their money” couldn’t do (which I hope you can understand is ridiculous).
I am too rubbish to do the Mad King Clocktower but I also know people enjoy it and I am happy enough that something exists I cannot do (hopefully you will be able to get to that mindset).
You ask politely but Anet should decline your request – the JPs are a big part of what makes GW2 unique and fun.

Forgot to add that I’m not interested in the “reward”, either.
So, seeing as I have sudden lag spikes (even on low graphics settings) that make regular jumping almost impossible to do accurately, I would have to be some kind of idiotic masochist, with no foresight and completely unrealistic expectations, to even try.
But, thanks for your input, anyway, Reaver.
I’m sure Anet appreciates all your unasked-for fighting on their behalf.
Makes us all totally change our opinions and love their not-at-all grindy old game just that little bit more, I’m sure.
