Female vs. Male Characters
Because females are sexy and people.rather look at a hot girl than some random dude .
I have about 50/50. I create characters based loosely on some idea I have for that character and then decide if male or female fits best.
But yeah, most women play exclusively female characters and many guys play them, so you’re going to end up with more females.

Honestly I don’t think that is the case. I don’t drool over my female toons. I just think they look more interesting than male toons. Their hair and armors look better. To me what they equip just seems to flow better than male toons. Male toons no matter what armor look generic and boring. I really think Anet should put a bit more work into the appearance of male toons. Maybe then you would see more.

I have one male character- a Charr. I do not like the male frame on Norns- it’s too bulky and unrealistic. Male humans may have quite a few options (comparatively) but none of the faces are quite what I’m looking for. There’s very little variation in the basic structure. I pretty much agree with your points, Trog.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
Personally, I think male Norns look like brainless muscleheads and the battle sounds they make really make …. I’m not even gonna talk about that.
I don’t agree with that . My warrior is a Male norn , but that’s the only male I have . A true warrior only thinks about glory and victory , you don’t need a brain for that . That’s why Norn and Charr are the best warriors : Strenght and Power will lead to the glorious victory of a warrior .

Wut? What the heck does this have to do with visuals?

That is usually the case in most games. Many players rather look at a hot female than a dude (obviously depends on many factors but you get the point).
Oh and the nice sets of skimpy armor for females helps too
I play female characters because girls rule and boys drool! But seriously. In my opinion the female form is superior to the male.
Most of the time, female version of gear is better . Though the new Phalanx heavy i would prefer on males.

Don’t talk kitten. Big norns are hotter than skinny females.

Looks like you are missing your left arm unless your left arm is a Charr.

Whatever keeps your great sword sharp. This is a safe place… no one is judging
I can see why people would choose females, males in this game have worse options for everything. Females have better haircuts, faces, and armor looks better.
I still choose to make a male, but making a cool looking Asura was not an easy feat.

Giant cat-man with horns is fine but a norn is unrealistic? O_o
I play a male sylvari and am quite happy with the amount of customization possible.
As for the people saying they would rather look at a “hot female”…you do realize that it’s a female rendered in cartoonish graphics. Nothing “hot” about those pixels. But regardless, it’s okay to admit that you’d like to play as something than an avatar of yourself in a video game. It’s a great change of pace and I always like to play females of “uglier” races (goblins and orcs in other games) for the uniqueness factor. You don’t have to preface your choice with: “Well I’d rather look at a hot chick than some duuude.”
Just own your preferences.

It’s fine for a fantasy game. Unrealistic may have been a poor word choice, though. I just mean male norns look like they’re on steriods, and the proportions feel off to me. Nice catch, though.

Female > male in terms of art. There are a lot of items in game that was designed for female toons imo
armors in games are always made with females in mind and then males as an afterthought. This seems true for every game.
But I got into the habit of making female characters after playing megaten where female armor seemed to drop more often from mobs than male armor, so the female armor was always cheaper.
I generally only play male characters, it’s unfortunate that developers of pretty much any game always put more effort into female design and armor than male.
I’m female so I mainly play female characters. I have 9 female characters and 1 male character. Also I think females have alot more customization possibilities than males do.

I would play a male human character if the customization allowed me to create a gritty grim looking dude.

I think women tend to mostly play female characters where as guys will play either which is why you see more . Its like that in all MMOs
Female characters have much better animations compared to male counterparts. Everything from idle stances to sword swing just look much more refined.
And female armors and other visuals just look much more detailed.
It’s probably because the male characters look atrocious in comparison.
Uh….i just created my first male character yesterday. Am i the only one that thinks half of the very few faces for human males are actually copies of female faces? I think maybe there are 5 visually masculin faces. Very few options for hair as well…..many look like Justin Beiber….no….just…no. only reason i want a male toon is cuz heavy armor looks WAY better on males than females and i’m tired of looking at hook*r babe warriors.
A lot of interesting and entertaining explainations why there are more female characters in this game.
Almost sad that it’s not true at all.
Seems roughly 2/3s of all characters are in fact male.
Noise a Norn Male makes when using a greatsword’s whirlwind attack:
“HURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!”
Needless to say. I did not roll Norn.
I feel more like I protect the character I play through my actions rather than think of it as an extension of myself. So I will always play the female characters. Some games, including GW2, they are just better to look at as well. As for why they seem to have more attention and detail, well, most artists are male in this industry. Don’t need a slide rule to figure out what most of them would be more enthused by.

And do you realize that most drawn/rendered women look far better than most real life women? It’s fine if you can’t appreciate aesthetics, but why assume the rest of us can’t, either?
I play a male human and i find it okay. You wouldn’t want a male character to look too girly, do you?
I got bored one day so I used a makeover kit to change my level 80 Elementalist from a guy into a girl. The girl’s frames are just more realistic than the awkward guy ones. The male stances are just plain awkward and unrealistic compared to females as well.

Looking over at a few male norns I can’t see what’s out of proportion for them. They just seem like muscular humans. I can go to a gym and find people like that but then again, a lot of them are on roids.
Just because the average person in real life is out of shape doesn’t mean a norn’s body is unrealistic. Save for their height of course. :P
One thing I have noticed is there seems to be a large number of female characters as opposed to male characters.
This is just not true.
Norn male body types look like all of them skipped leg day.
Norn male body types look like all of them skipped leg day.
But, broski, every day is upper body day!
I wanted to make an old and rugged Norn male guardian. Then I saw the male bodies. They look awful. They need longer legs and normal necks.
Norn should look like agile and strong warriors, not like blobs of muscle.

oh like UFC fighters or WWE Wrestlers then ?
You can really feel the difference once you play a norn. Female norns feel like extremely large, barbaric humans and they move around as such while male norns are hulking masses of wonkiness. They literally bounce around the battle field and their animations are everywhere and far less refined when compared to their female counterparts imo.
Male humans aren’t much better off. Appearance wise you are limited to 3 choices: prettier than female humans, muscle monster, or awkward.
This is all without getting into the armor since most male characters just cover their faces, unless they’re light but light human and norn males don’t exist.
Makonne – Hybrid Regen Ranger
Well, I am a middle-aged woman and I have both male and female characters of every race. I don’t drool after any of them. My daughter thinks one of my male human’s is very handsome, but she herself only plays females as she can step in their boots more easily.
Why do I play a variety of characters? Because I am a roleplayer and love to look at things from another perspective. My male Asura guardian (who is cute as a button) is not at all the same as my Norn female Guardian for example.
All my characters look pleasant, I don’t use the wrinkled/scarred faces. I would love to have more freedom to make something between ugly and too pretty though. I may be odd, but I would love regular looking people.
I guess my ideal game would be a MMORPG with the character creation from the Sims 4.
I joined this game in part based on it’s pretty male humans and was disappointed to find a lack of skimpy armor or long fluffy hair styles for said pretty males so at current, I only have two men (a human and a sylvari) and the rest are women (even my Charr – male Charr are ugly as sin! What gives? No lion or housecat look for them? Why do male Norn all look like steroid WWE wrestlers?) – sorta disappointing that this game lacks a bit in options for femme men or butch women (yeah, you look real tough in that starter light armor – who in the heck designed that crap?).
Oh and.. no, I don’t have females because they’re “sexy”. Might have something to do with me liking to play my own gender out there kicking butt.
Forever known as “that slow guardian who can’t jump worth crap”.
I do believe this is a matter of class, armor looks and animation. It depends also heavily on the race chosen.
When it comes of Humans and Sylvari, the male animation seems lackluster. Of course these two races differ but for example the stance animation looks…. just dull if you ask me. Nothing fancy really.
The other thing with these two races is how they handle armor and weapons. Never really played male Human, but I can tell you a lot of wrong things with male Sylvari. The armor has a strange bulk in the waist area making whatever a male char wears look like a dress and the weapons are too far away from the body making them clip with the hands – they are also positioned awkwardly (not an issue with Human male). The weapons used to be closer to the body but as they changed female a while back (females used to have weapons too close to the body sometimes making them disappear under the clothes) they also changed males… now the weapons float. Overall males look like golems while females have a very nice, smooth animations. When in combat the look like a panther ready to leap, have nice running and jumping. Furthermore the armor look way better on them
No really gonna go with the detail about other classes and races but there are not as many problems like with Sylvari (I have 4 Sylvari and all females cause I can’t stand how blocky and unnatural males look). It basically depends on the class.
For example I have got a Female Norn Ranger, Male Asura Engi, Female Human Ele and Male Charr Warrior (rest are Sylvari). I just find females fitting for these class/race combos and males for others
My characters are 50/50 too. Just for the sake of playing something different instead of male 24/7. But for my main I chose the male gender for a reason. This is a roleplaying game, I want to feel associated with my character and I can’t achieve that when my is the opposite gender.
Most of my characters are female, but I do have a couple of male characters as well.
I like the options for female. More hair options, more faces, more body styles. My only wish is that I would have loved tattoo options for Humans. Norn have tattoos and woads, Charr have “spots,” Sylvari have skin patterns, and Asura has skin patterns. Human got nuttin, hunny….
Cheers!
I’m a male. The reason most off my characters are female is that I spent most time looking at the back. And personally I prefer looking at a womans back.
Bottom line is that most female players I know prefer playing female characters. for male players bout 50% prefers playing a female character (and indeed not to impersonate a woman, I seldom do that but cause they prefer the looks). the other 50% prefers a male character.
This means there are more female characters in game then male.

Just because the people around you think that way doesn’t mean the whole community thinks the same.
Because female characters are more attractive?
