Hi, I just started playing Guild Wars 2 about a week ago and I’m really enjoying the experience.

One question I have though is that why are there so few items in the Gem Store?
I don’t really feel like buying gems when there’s almost nothing to spend them on. I’m not asking for Pay-to-Win items, that would be horrible, but like; why aren’t there more cosmetic stuff and such?

One would think that a Buy-to-Play game would have more items in their item store to attract consumers.

They tend to remove items from the gem store after an arbitrary amount of time. This tends to lend those items immediacy and increase the need or desire for them “right now”.

It’s a marketing tactic that resonates with a large part of the player base. Makes them feel “special”.

The ones that are removed are labeled as being temporarily available in the cash shop. It is implied that they will not be returning.

It is very possible that some items may return in one form or another. Items such as the permanent harvesting tools will almost certainly return at a later date to take advantage of a new market, ie new players. Other items, such as certain armor sets, town clothes, vanity backpacks, musical instruments, vanity travel items may or may not return either to lend themselves a false sense of rarity, or may return in a slightly altered form so as to make the most money with the least amount of effort involved.

All in all, you have not missed much anyway, so don’t worry too much about it. Some of the best items were seasonal and will probably be making a reappearance…and probably be improved to boot.

Seems to work for Anet. I assume they have an eye on other games implementation of cash shops and will modify theirs accordingly if necessary.

I don’t think it’s implied they wont return, but they are for a temporary time. I can see items like the gathering tools/holiday costume brawl returning again over the course of the game multiple times for a temporary time.

I decided to buy something from the gem store tonight. Because I ‘essentially’ enjoy the game in spite of all the parts I don’t enjoy. So I shelled out the cash for 1600 gems and spent 500 of them on the Krytan Armor set. Really, though, all I wanted was the Krytan chest piece for my ranger girl. Hey! Something besides a god kitten trench coat. Yeah, yeah, there’s a couple of other sets that don’t have the coat thing going on, but I believe they are too high level for her and anyway they aren’t her style.

Not sure what to spend the rest on. Maybe level 80 transmutation stones, as they evidently do not drop in the wild anymore. :-/

Would really like that pirate outfit as an armor skin instead of freaking town clothes. Hint, hint.

It’s actually pretty funny when it comes to the cash shop. Most people were worried about it being p2w, but here we are asking for more things to be added to it. I think they are getting along fine with their gold for cash.
