This is something that has been bothering me and my friends for a long time now.
Most of us who do the Hungry Cats quests tend to do so because we are animal lovers. However, at one point hungry cats were introduced that, when fed, would add a mess cats to your home instance that do nothing but fight each other.
Many people who fed these cats did so immediately after the patch release, before they could be properly documented and assuming that they would just add new (docile) cats to the home instance as it had been in the past.
So I’m asking, can we please get an option to remove the fighting cats?
Out of my entire friend group, no one has found it amusing. We all love animals and do not like to see them fighting for any reason; and would not have fed them if we had known they would be appear in the instance like this.
I know it seems overkill but imagine if you are a veterinarian or something …
I haven’t asked about this before because it seemed like home instance had been abandoned, however with Draconis Mons some changes were made.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
Im mean its not like anyone is abusing the cats or treats them badly. They just play like all animals do like, like children would do. Since no cat dies or loses health (which would imply that they get hurt) whats the issue here? You said it your self your request is overkill, i much rather have the devs fixing bugs in pvp like the knockback stuck in a wall bug rather than removing cats.
(edited by zealex.9410)
I feel like they’re just playing. My RL cats are sisters who love each other but now and then they get the whaps and pounces and rassles going, sometimes with yowls, and they don’t hurt each other at all doing it because it’s all in fun.
Sparring is how these Hungry Cats are staying in shape!
If you look at the health bars, you will see that none of them are being damaged; they are “fighting”, not fighting. Cats play with each other by jumping and clawing on each other. (Heck, my cat likes to do that with me, even after training.)
In addition, this is a game in which people take “pets” into combat, sentient frogs fight each other, one of the playable races experiments on semi-sentient rats, and some Earth-like animals routinely go after other Earth-like animals. If you love animals so much that it hurts you to see them behaving like animals, this might not be the game for you.

Your Home Instance is supposed to be your Home instance, not some random part of the game.
But your answer is suck it up or leave the game? Wow.
I agree that there should be controls to allow you to turn on or off any of the things you have added to your instance. As the OP said, it isn’t possible to actually experience these things inside the instance until you’ve added them.
(edited by Djinn.9245)
No support. Probably one of the worst suggestions here. Not worth development time. Home instance isn’t a player-owned house. You can’t reverse accidental personal story decisions that impact on your home instance.

Interesting interpretation of my remarks.
First, no, the home instance has never allowed us to customize as we like. We can add stuff and some NPCs appear as we complete parts of stories, but it’s not ours in the sense of having much control over it.
Second, the OP is saying they can’t stand to see animals fighting. The entire game is filled with fighting animals — if that bothers the person, it’s not the home instance … it’s the entire game. So I’m not at all saying they have to suck it up if they don’t like a home instance like that; I’m saying that it’s worth reconsidering what really bothers them, because clearly the same behavior is ok when it happens elsewhere in the same game. (And if it’s not, is this really the right game for them? To play something where they are being disturbed frequently by what’s happening?)
And finally, real animals play by fighting. As an animal lover myself, I like that the game mimics this by allowing the cats to have a corner of the world safe enough that they can do this.
In other words, I’m not saying “suck it up” — I’m saying, look at from a different angle. I’m hoping the OP will see it as natural, as a fun addition or at worst, as something that doesn’t have to bother them.
cats a solitary are they not, and normally hate each other and will fight. but sometimes they do snuggle up

Again, I think the OP understands that since the thread is about how he can’t control his Home instance and I certainly understand it since I said so.
Second, the OP is saying they can’t stand to see animals fighting.
…in some place that is called his “Home”. I could live in the middle of the Serengeti and yet not allow my pets to fight on my property. Military personnel bring service dogs into combat but don’t allow them to fight with other pets on their property. I don’t see your point at all. O.o
I wish home instance was more customizable too but to do so for this reason seems unreasonable oversensitive. I mean you are playing an MMO where you kill animals ALL the time….
The cats are play-fighting (with snowballs); there’s no hissing, no damage being done to the cats, no blood, etc. My real-life cats do the same kind of play-fighting (sans snowballs because we live in the south). I think it’s cute. That being said, I wouldn’t be against an option to toggle on/off certain animations or actions in our home instances.

If cats acting like cats offends you, this game and real life, might not be for you.
So you don’t see the distinction between hunting / killing animals in the wild and not liking to see your pets fight?
So seven, you allow your pets to fight with each other all the time or think that’s fine? I guess that’s your choice but I certainly don’t think it’s fine.

Even the ones that are fighting without snowballs are still just play-fighting (which is normal, non-hostile behavior in cats and many other species). Again, no damage is being done to the cats, no blood, and no angry cat sounds.

Well, to be fair here, one has to point out that the sound they make when hitting each other is rather brutal, and they do fly quite a distance when hit.
They’re play-fighting. Cat’s in real life play fight all the time. It’s natural and harmless behaviour.
They’re not even serious enough about it to take the time to kill the frog.
It appears OP has not really dealt with cats in real life. Unless you have an allergy, you’re missing out. There’s generally a huge difference between a cat that is playing with something and a cat that wants to kill something. If it’s angry, it’ll definitely make sure you’ll know.
I mean why are these things so nimble? Because they developed these skills early in life, as well as learning to you know, NOT, hurt each other through play. You would do your kittens a disservice otherwise.

Welcome to 2017, where cats made out of pixels fighting each other in a game is a serious issue.
As for myself, I love the fighting cats in GW2, as do many other people I know.
The first rule of Cat Fight Club….is that you don’t talk about Cat Fight Club.
Instead of telling the OP their opinion is wrong, why not simply address the idea of allowing us to control our Home Instance? If you don’t think it’s a worthwhile effort, that’s your opinion. But why would you try to tell someone that their opinion about something is incorrect?
(edited by Djinn.9245)
Having the ability to control aspects of the home instance would be a great idea and a good step towards making it more personal, more like a home.
One reason I haven’t done all the cat collection is because I’m not sure I want to permanently add all these cats to all my home instances, and then of course any other items permanently added through future achievements. It would be nice to be able to toggle on and off the things added to out home instances instead of all of them being permanent.
As a self-professed animal lover, you have to understand that cats are intelligent creatures. They’re curious about the world around them, and their own bodies. Kittens (and many other kinds of life on earth) tend to discover these kinds of things through play with their peers.
Get a couple of kittens of your own – you’ll notice they do the same thing!
TL;DL: They aren’t fighting for bloodsport. They’re fighting for fun, exercise and hunting training.

This is how everyone behaves nowadays they act like complaining about something in order to induce change is the worst thing in the world, and as such the love it or leave it logic comes into play. No I think we’ll continue to complain until it’s fixed while everyone else sits back lazy and doesn’t try to make anything better ever.
…i much rather have the devs fixing bugs in pvp like the knockback stuck in a wall bug rather than removing cats.
ArenaNet has multiple employees, and they very likely do different jobs and tasks. They probably even have different teams that deal with different issues. The person that would be responsible for “fixing” the cats would almost certainly not be the same person that would be responsible for PVP bugs. I’ve seen the same thing said about other issues that players raise in other games. I remember the ESO community manager specifically saying the same thing. She said there are multiple teams and they each have different areas of responsibility. They don’t put every developer on the same task every day.
Having to get in the middle of a cat fight? That’s not something I’d wish upon any Anet developer.
So I would just like to point out that the fighting cats are the class specific cats. Each cat only being acquirable by a specific class. The entire point of these cats is that they’re PvP cats. That’s why they’re fighting. They’re in an endless PvP match between each other.

What does this have to do with the OP?
Maybe OP is referring to the cats that throw snowballs at each other and occasionally you. I dunno, seems realistic to me, but I’m alittle concerned about the snowball sticking to the paw fur and causing a misfire, perhaps even a tightly packed snowball hitting another cats eye at the right speed, but in all honesty how tight can a cat really pack a snwball? Other than that, whatever they have to do to get through the day, that’s their prerogative.

Ohh. Sorry, I didn’t take this to be a joke thread. My mistake.

No, there are new cats that fight with each other directly – snowballs aren’t involved. I linked the wiki page with all the cats earlier in the thread if you would like to reference what all the cats do.

It’s more for the people trying to excuse the fighting as just play. These cats are in a PvP match, so it’s more relevant how you interpret that than how cats play with each other. If you consider that in PvP the players are trying to kill each other, then these cats are going for blood. If you consider that despite being defeated you can get up and continue to play then it should be less concerning.
I’m an animal lover and you have no support from me whatsoever. As stated above, cats attack each other as a form of play. Not only that, but no health is being lost by them either (even if it is supposed to be a PvP match). You said it yourself, this is overkill and an absolutely trivial request.

This a video game with a multitude of actual problems that need to be addressed. “My pixelated cat is doing cat things and I don’t like it” is not a real problem and the fact that you would even attempt to make it the forefront of Arenanet’s time and effort is asinine.
Disclaimer: I suppose looking back through this, it might look like I’m making fun of you, but I’m really not. And ‘you’ is you and everyone else. I just find it interesting from the perspective of ‘what we choose to call things’ (like calling the ‘Estate Tax’ the ‘Death Tax’ to illicit a certain reaction, even though the underlying thing it references has not changed).
I wonder how much of this is just because of what they were called. ‘Fighting’ cats. If they were described everywhere as ‘playing’ cats, would you have asked about this. The animation isn’t super specific, they could be fighting or playing, but because they were called ‘fighting cats’ to begin with, that is what you see them doing.
If they renamed them everywhere they are described (including the wiki) as ‘playing’ cats, would that make a difference? Is there something specific about the animation that makes it look like they are fighting and not playing? Or is it mostly that you are ‘told’ they are fighting, so that is what they are doing?
I’m just wondering if they could just change the name of them to ‘playing’ (w/ and w/o snowball) and if that would fix it, or if that ship has sailed, and even if their name is changed, we’d see them as fighting because that is what we were told?
If a new person got them after the name change, would they post a thread that says, “I know they are called ‘playing’ cats, but it ‘really’ looks like they are fighting, and I wish they’d change it so it looked like they were playing”?

As they’re pvp cats, I’d say they’re definitely fighting and also definitely playing.
Idk if anyone else has said it, but these aren’t house cats. You found these cats out in the wild and they only followed you home because you had food. So them behaving like wild cats is pretty much to be expected.

And it really shows….
You can’t have it both ways. Either they’re pixels in a video game world with different standards, and placing our standards on them is foolish. Or something is appalling by real world standards, in which case you should know what you’re talking about.
Making a big deal over a video game thing, and then going back to say “it’s a game”, doesn’t work because you just reduced your point to its logical conclusion: You’re making a big deal over nothing.
So if you say, the actual behavior of actual cats doesn’t matter, then what does? In-series canon information?
(edited by ArchonWing.9480)
I’ve no problem with the cats, either way, but I’m wondering why they are called or considered ‘PvP’ cats. I only acquired one (the Revenant one) in the PvP Lobby.
I had the foresight this might happen. You can’t expect to visit your home instance every few days or even once a day and take proper care of many animals. I only save the cats that truly need help. I have one so far, and it’s the one I found in bitterfrost frontier that lost it’s whole family.
I try to avoid rescuing animals I won’t really have time for.

About 35 seconds in. (No idea why that big gap is there.)
And the biggest problem is that it is in the Home Instance where you should have some control over your environment. When you acquire the cats, you are given no description or warning that you will end up with fighting cats in your Home. And you have no way of getting rid of them if you don’t like their behavior.

No, I’m saying that I can be irritated by something in my “Home” instance whether it is realistic or not.

No, I’m saying that I can be irritated by something in my “Home” instance whether it is realistic or not.
Which is an empty argument. People can be irritated for any reason. Whether or not that irritation should be catered to depends on how rational it is. Maybe the color red offends me. Do I get the right to demand resources to get rid of red in the game? Maybe they should give me an option to demand that “Bleeding” should be removed because the idea of blood terrifies me. Hell, I think that’s more rational what we have here.
And all we have here is an irrational sentiment that cats play fighting is somehow abhorrent without any kind of moral, naturalistic, or philosophical standard. If an argument only works on your own head, independent of reality, I don’t see why anyone should pay it any heed.
I don’t want to be too tough on people. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions. It is good one cares about animal rights. But a lack of understanding of said animals can do more hurt than harm. This is why they tell you not to feed wild animals. It is why people are here to correct these misunderstandings— it’s called respect. Respect animals not just for existing, but also because they have much more of their own will and wit than most people give them credit for. It’s human arrogance to think they’re the only ones capable of intelligence (Also, the case against superior human intelligence is evident by watching people cross the street.)
This game is already incredibly politically correct. And that’s not a slight against itl I think it’s worthy of respect because it shows they have gone out of there way to be as inclusive as they can. Well, guess it truly is impossible sometimes.

Ahh…of course.
Thanks.

Yeah looking at the video, those are fighting cats not playing.
But put a commander tag on two of them and add siege equipment or a small castle in the center and then it would be funny.
A question to those opposed to the fighting cats: have you killed any tigers or other big cats in this game? Just curious where the line is.

Yes, “as a cat lover” I have seen it (dunno why you had to quote that lol), and I think it’s endearing. They’re cats we’ve collected from the wild (as someone else has said), so why expect them to behave like domestic cats?
What it comes down to is this: if you get triggered by cats formed by pixels fighting in an imaginary game world then you’ve lived a very sheltered life and need a bigger issue to focus on. This is a complete non-issue. You don’t like it then don’t go into your home instance, and don’t collect any more cats. Problem solved.
Good luck.
