I see a lot of adjustment types listed, except the ability to fine tune how far the camera moves on the dolly each time you ‘click’ a mouse wheel roll.

Short and sweet article. I guess this is a product of the new toys they have to play with for HoT. Specifically the skill that they showed that changed the camera view (drop the hammer). This will make some jumping puzzles much easier, and have a few other fun applications too!

i think in general jumping puzzles are harder in first person view since you cant exactly see where you stand…

but i definitly appreciate first-person view coming if it does
always nice for screenshots

In general I’d agree, however so many have very tight spaces that the camera can’t penetrate well and you can’t see your next jump very easily. In those cases switching to first person will be a godsend.

The FoV slider will also be rather great depending on how it is implemented (I’m optimistic).

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

how are they broken? Our strongest DPS in the guild is an engi, rangers and necros are very strong in Spvp if you build them right. The fact that there’s a PVE meta, doesn’t mean that the classes are useless, rather that they offer less support than warrior banners/ guardian walls and that they’re harder to learn.

This is great news. Especially the work on the snappiness of the camera. Playing in narrow places with a lot of snapping currently makes me dizzy and gives me a headache (all signs of motion sickness) and is generally not fun. How good are all these shooters with their rock-steady camera in comparison.
Looking forward for any improvement, how little it may be.

Feature patches are usually all about a bundle of changes in a single package, right? If this is part of a Feature Patch, I think Arenanet would have provided an official blog post on this site hyping it up. Otherwise, I see this as another small update patch

As for the change itself, I can see this as another opportunity for GW2 machinima makers to make something better as there have been very very few videos from that game. If not for machinima, at least it’s good for easy screenshots.

So hyped about this. Really really excited. I have to think “finally” as everyone else, but it makes me very happy and positive to see that it isn’t simply a “first-person-view” patch, but it actually looks more like a complete overhaul.

  • First person
  • Vertical and horizontal adjustment
  • Field of view
  • Focus point option: feet vs head
  • Collision Sensitivity “which will adjust how much ‘stuff’ (trees, rocks, walls..) needs to be between the character and the camera before the camera snaps in.” < that one is huge!

Really looking forward to this. A BIG thank you to ArenaNet!

None of them need fixing. I play all 3 and do perfectly fine. Maybe it’s just you who needs some fixing.

Let’s just take Necro because i know about that classes problem the most: YES, it needs fixing. A LOT. The AI and pathing of pets is broken. The Delays the minions’ abilities have make them useless for the most part. Bone Minions’ Putrid explosion STILL is bugged so that the blast finisher has a 3 second delay after the minion actually exploded. A lot of traits are either useless the way they currently are, or not synergizing. AT ALL. PvE Conditions are broken invalidating over half of our possible builds. “Flesh of the Master” causes minions to bug out so they die when you get downed, which doesn’t happen to any other class or when the trait isn’t equipped. When we get transformed by a mesmer, our pets die. Ele pets , guardian spirit weapons etc. all stay, most likely because the Necro pets faultly link to the “if you change form to Lich/Plague, all pets get killed” mechanic.

As for PvP, we still start with 0 Life Force, so we basically start without a class mechanic unlike all other professions. But yes, in WvW Necros are good, I’m not denying that. And in sPvP, they are pretty decent too. But that doesn’t mean that a lot of our skills and traits aren’t bugged, vastly inferior so similar traits of other professions, or not worth taking under any circumstances. Similar issues have been brought to attention the past 2.5 years, and there has still been no attention to any of them, because apparently, a First Person Camera is something thats far more important. Where would you want to use that, anyway, except for maybe screenshots? In comparison, it limits the view of their surroundings, will most likely make ground targeted spells a nuisance to place correctly, and i doubt they made the effort to make new animations for everything , so this will be a visual gimmick for screenshotters and people that get thrills of doing jump-puzzles in “elite mode” at best.

But hey, I’d like to be surprised by a good and usable implementation of the cam. I’d just love some attention to pressing issues with the classes, too, especially before HoT hits… or maybe they think “well let’s just see the balance state of old vs new and then start to manage things”, but after the past 2.5 years, i really, REALLY doubt it.

I couldn’t care less about first person view as I always prefer 3rd person whenever applicable (I like to see my characters I worked hard making), but I’m glad other people will get some use out of it. I know its been a much-requested feature. Although, if you can still see your weapons Elder Scrolls style then I guess I might use it occasionally for closer inspection of my weapons.

The camera collision thing sounds amazing, though. It drives me up the wall when I get near a tiny rock and the camera has a seizure and gets sucked right up my characters’ butt. Hopefully its as good as it sounds on paper (or, well, computer screen).

Kind of confused about the supposed “change” to the camera making it change based on race, because it seems to me it already does that. On my Charr, for instance, I have to zoom the camera out 2 notches in order to see my full character, where on my Asura and Sylvari I only have to zoom out one notch. And in tight spaces my Asura’s camera has less “seizure moments” than my Charr would in the same spot. I guess maybe its just a position change?

then your main gripe is pets? So how then Engineer hit that list?
I never found necros minions that problematic, similarly as I like to run a build with stupid amount of golems on my asura, however rangers pets have a memory of a gold fish.

A lot of traits are either useless the way they currently are, or not synergizing. AT ALL.

With some proper building you can run 3 healthbars. Normal health (when you hit low on that, deathshroud) + health back up when out of death shroud. The necros I’ve seen in Spvp were very annoying on their healthpool.

machinimas bring a lot of publicity. Plus it was such a requested feature that majority even modded it in, only to get banned for it. It was such a requested feature that reporters would ask about it in pretty much every interview. Nobody ever went “when will you fix necros?”, even though the condition limiter has been brought to light multiple times too.

oh, one other thing, would be nice if tps is improved, the more i play games like skyrim the more i like my character off the middle.
i know we don’t have the hands-on battle system in GW2 like target-less games have it but it’s a start…..

Nobody forces you to use first person view, obviously. Especially not all the time.

As for me, I hope they’ll have an option “reset to default settings” which should be what we have currently.

I also always prefer 3rd person, but with the present camera behavior, I’ve been forced to look through my norn’s back (not fully transparently) or head, and it’s similar with charr, sylvari, and humans. I’ve always wanted the ability to at least temporarily zoom in fully to see my surroundings. This is definitely a huge improvement, especially if the camera behaves better near walls than before. I might actually create additional characters of norn/human/charr/sylvari. As the camera is, I had vowed to only make asura because they were the least problematic.

Please God, Z-axis slider/control! That and FoV were the two biggest request I had right from launch.

Editing to add, I find myself many times trying to scroll back the camera to zoom out. I could not fathom using first person for combat. Seems like it would reduce my performance greatly.

I don’t actually like first person camera view in like, any game, however, I do realise it’s usefulness when it comes to accurate targetting, and in the case of GW2, it will be a big help when it comes to those awkward JPs or stacking in corners in Dungeons (where you usually can’t see a bloody thing and have to guess where to swing, also making it difficult to Dodge correctly), so this is good news.

Of course, I’ll be sticking to third person most of the time, so hopefully it will be easy to just switch it between third and first person on the fly just like the ES games.

I use the -useOldFoV switch to start the game to ensure it behaves as it did when it first came out, before the FoV change a few months in, which I didn’t care for. It’s not clear to me what the “default” is going to be on Mar 10th, and I don’t expect it will be covered tomorrow.

As such, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how I might go about taking some control screen shots that I could then use as a guide to restore my game to looking how it does today with the -useOldFoV switch.

I love how everything looks now and wouldn’t want to change a thing, and would rather not be struggling on March 10 trying to restore it. I’m just interested in the finer dolly tracking for zooming I and out.
