“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
First person camera coming?
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I’ll never, ever use this feature, due to how nauseated I get trying to play anything in first person view. But I guess hooray for those who actually wanted it!
I have the same problem with FPV. It makes me sad I can’t play any of the Bioshock games. However, all that other stuff is going to really help with the motion sickness I get from other types of play, where the camera is zooming in and out like it’s on a slinky, or I get turned upside down in tight quarters during Boss fights because so much stuff is going on and squished into a tight space. Also Jumping Puzzles! I currently have a very difficult time with most JPs because of motion sickness. Being able to fine tune my camera and adjust it from doing all that jittering if a leaf happens to be in my face? NOT getting sick is going to help a LOT, lol.
Thanks ANET!!!
HIIIYYYAA! Cha! *Aims toward wall and does random not-really-karate moves*
I’m so happy!
i do hope zooming wil get a slider option, one that can be used by holding MB3.

I’m right there with you guys. I can’t play anything that requires first person perspective due to motion sickness. I tend to take Dramamine if I’m going to even attempt a jumping puzzle because of all the automatic zooming in and out.
On the other hand, this will be very nice for taking some scenic screenies.
Well, I will never use this feature, first person view games give me motion sickness but I’m happy for people who don’t vomit on the screen (and I envy them). Next step: add a “fixed” camera for third person view, the random zooms during jumping puzzles also make me vomit.
I think the “fixed” camera is part of collision detection adjustments you’ll be able to make.
I’m doing a little Snoopy Happy Dance now just thinking about being able to do puzzles without getting sick
omg awesome now i can make good looking machinama!
I may have misunderstood the article, but does this mean the max zoom distance will be greater than what it is currently?
One of the most annoying things in GW2 by far is the incredibly short max zoom distance.
Should be nice for filming, especially recording GvGs as a spectator.
Sad day to be a Asura Staff Ele. We are going to have a hard time casting Ground skills with this if we choose to play that way .
first person is gonna make this game feel so big now.
Running around the cities you will now have a much better sense of scale, imagine that new jumping puzzle in the silver wastes you thought it looked big before? wait till u try do it in FP as an asura, it will feel massive!
I’d rather they fix the classes Ranger Engi and Necro first like people have asked for for 2.5 years, cause that actually would be meaningful improvement instead of a purely cosmetical/gimmicky one.
Camera People can fix classes? Is Anet a one-armed Cyclop?
Does this mean we can play with Ocolus Rift and Virtuix Omini?!
OMG!!! My Dreams of VR MMORPG is coming true in GUILD WARS 2!!!!!
I LOVE YOU ARENANET!!!!

This is huge if true.
Confirmed yes! Our blog will be out shortly with more information.
You can also check out the Ready Up show tomorrow at noon pacific time to see some of the new camera stuff in action!
Ehey Colin! I wish to ask what is the point of making 1st personal view when game mechanics and combat flow itself does not have right gameplay for first personal view combat?
Why not give us full top view so we can have more control on battle field itself? I would love to zoom-out for 1-2x more scrolls, nothing fancy but that would help a lot to resize view for 20%-30%…
I really don’t see use of 1st personal view other then making community trailers/shoots.
Can you collaborate your point of view why this choice over top view ?

Well this was unexpected, but very very welcome. Kudos Anet.

I just wanted to log on and say thank you, mainly for the FOV options, which will make this game a thousand times better for me and a large number of individuals.
Thank you.
I can’t say that I am likely to use first person, but I am very glad for those who have been asking for this since launch. Kudos for listening to your customers Anet.
I know the first person camera perspective was sorely missed at launch, and I’m glad it’s finally reaching the game. Will this feature be tucked behind the expansion? If so, then that’s disconcerting. Between first person camera, Stronghold ( evolution of GvG) and guild halls these features should have been included at launch. More and more, the expansion is feeling like a chance to purchase the missing core components from launch and not an actual expansion of the game.
This is a good thing.
“The new camera options will be shown working in a Twitch livestream tomorrow, Friday 27th February, 8pm GMT.”
8pm GMT = 2pm Central / 3pm Eastern / 12noon Pacific
New camera options are great! Now i hope for some more UI options like:
1. Separate On / Off names for Npc’s, Vendors & Quest Npc,s
2. Separate On / Off names for players, party, guildmates, friends, minions, miniatures
3. Separate On / Off names for hostile, neutral mobs
4. On / Off HP bar for all the above
5. Separate Self On / Off for name, minions, HP bars
6. Separate Animation Quality Option for self, players, mobs
7. Option to Show Only Your Conditions On mobs
8. Separate Char Limit / Quality option for self, other players
9. Separate Sound option for self, other players skills
10. Moving / Resizing of Target Frame
11. On – Off Skills / Heal / Utilities / Elite Tooltip Description with mouse over

According to the articles, we are getting these camera improvements on March 10.
First person is going to be really nice in some places, especially if we can swap in and out of it like some FPS and action games, that’s gonna be great.
Not to mention how this will be such a huge boon for short fan flicks and GW2 machinamas.
But I’m really hyped about the “over the shoulder” camera angle we see going on in the wyvern fight.
Something like that during a major boss fight or even in smaller zerg clashes is going to be just fantastic.
If we can kinda hotswap between these different camera modes, it’s going to really bring GW2 to another level. It’s a wonderful surprise.
It’s something I didn’t even think that I needed… and I needed this so much. It’s about time this thing that I didn’t know I needed came!
Anet, pls.
Hopefully we get an FoV slider as well. It’s wayyyyyyyyy too narrow as is e.e

So if you look down from your characters eyes you also will see your character itself? I hope you implement this, since it was so disappointed that my character didn’t exist. When I looked down in first person view in Guild Wars 1 I didn’t see myself no armor and also no hands with weapons. Make it a real first person view plz and not just screenshot first person view or give a option to toggle it on or off!
I was more excited to hear about this than HoT… heck, I still am!
So happy.
Really looking forward to setting up a slight over the shoulder view. All I need now is a crosshair, or an option to keep the cursor visible when you right click, and I’ll be set.
Between HoT and this, so far I’d say 2015 is shaping up pretty nicely.

I’m excited for the change (mostly having more dolly control), but I’m concerned about what the ‘default’ setting will be. Presumably, there will be some way to set it to what we have right now, like ‘reset to default’.
Beyond that, I’m one of the few (only?) people who might still be using the ‘-useOldFoV’ switch to start the game. Some months in after release, people complained about the FoV (I never had an issue with it myself), so they made a change. For people that liked the original look of the game, they gave us the ‘-useOldFoV’ param, which still works today.
Now, if they ‘strip’ that out, then a ‘reset to default’ on all the camera options would, presumably, reset it to how it looks ‘without’ the -useOldFoV param, which then becomes problematic for me.
I took a couple control screen shots in my home instance. I don’t know if where I stood and faced and what I tried to use as control landmarks in the image are going to suit me well if on 3/10 I have to spend hours trying to get my screen back to what it looks like today with the -useOldFoV param, but it’s something I’m concerned about, and would really love some feed back on.

We got the defiance change one, but nothing on the camera changes.

So what happened to the article/blog? We have all the other game site ones, but not ANets?
Please give us a keyring…

You really need to read the links before you post.
Heres hoping they nail it, and not leave it feeling floaty (heres looking at you eso)
Heres hoping they nail it, and not leave it feeling floaty (heres looking at you eso)
I think, unlike ESO, it’s probably not meant to be used in combat. It was floaty in GW1.
The purpose is to give us the ability to zoom in and see the world from time to time, not to give us an alternative view for fights.
I’m happy they put no restrictions on it though. Anyone who has trouble fighting in first person, but continues to do so, will be their own worst enemy. The rest of us will be smart enough not to do that.
About. Kitten. Time.
I would have really preferred seeing this in beta, or in the long, long intervening years since (sheesh!), but now that it’s finally, finally almost here, I just gotta say…
Thanks Branden! Thanks Colin!
