I want to trade some gold for gems, I accidentally tried to convert gems to gold and the offer was;

20g for 218 Gems.

Now I went convert gold to gems and got;

25g for 200 Gems and 27g 93s for 218 Gems.

This is a rip off, I have no problems with a money sink, that if a player spends money they get more and maybe paying a little more per gem but nearly 10g difference for very little in return?

Being British I am used to being ripped off when it comes to real world currency, I don’t need it in a video game.

Can the system not be changed to say if you payed for Gems you get 10% discount for 24h or something and keep the conversion rates in sync?

After all I keep hearing "The more people convert gold to gems the price goes up, so surely the gems have a set value in the economy which is completely ignored with real world transactions.

You say you have no problem with a money sink, but then you complain anyway?

It’s both a gold sink and a deterrent for “enterprising” GW2 players to game the exchange rate and make a profit. Think about it. If the difference would be, say only 5%, it would be profitable to buy gems today, wait for a couple of months and sell the gems.

Anet does not want people to make profit on selling and buying gems/gold. Plain and simple. That’s why there is a staggering 20% cut both ways.

just pointing out that this isnt a gw2 thing exclusively. The same thing happens in real life. Buying and selling currencies have different rates. IE If I say convert 100 Euro to USD and then back to Euro I will end up with less then 100 Euro.

It also makes sense from an economic point of view. Gems have more “value” then Gold. Ergo it makes sense for an exchange to charge higher when people buy gems then when people buy gold.
