As European when I search for “English flag” on the Internet, I get mainly two flags: the flag of UK or the flag of England. Both the country and the nation have English as official language.

The LFG introduces the flag of the USA for looking people speaking English. Yet the USA don’t have any official language. So please, be courteous for EU and change the flag to something meaningful for us.

Edit: this is not me being “anti-american”, “pro-european” or something. It’s just that for us European, we associate the English language with the Union Jack, not the Star-Spangled Banner.

I also would’ve preferred a UK flag for English in LFG. I saw those USA flags yesterday and got confused every time – it made me feel I was going to join an NA server group

This needs to change. I know a lot of Americans can be patriotic about how great their country is but English language should be linked to an English/British flag.

Maybe it’s because the game uses American English? (Armor instead of armour, fries instead of chips etc.)

I’m not that bothered either way, but if it’s confusing for people then I agree it should be changed.

The american flag has no relevance in eu. However im sure even americans can work out the uk/english flag means english. It should be split between the two servers anyway just to avoid confusion. When i first saw it I thought my lfg was bugged and showing NA groups, then i noticed the german groups and thought wtf.

Interestingly English isn’t actually the official language (im defining official as de jure, i.e. in law) of the UK. There is only one de jure language in the UK and that’s in Wales and it’s Welsh.

I don’t understand how people can be confused at the use of the US flag to designate the English language. This is the case all over the internet. I could understand if you were new to the internet but chances are if you’re playing an MMO you’re not. Besides, the game is in American English.

Its not confusion of what the language is. Its confusion of whether you are seeing the right groups. I dont expect to see US flags while playing on EU. Its as simple as that. And i cant imagine its hard for them to do a separate and more relevant flag for the different client.

Also from a personal opinion i find the US flag hideous and would rather not see it. xD

To stop bickering from both sides of the pond, it should be both flags next to the LFG.

Tbh, i’d prefer a simple ‘Eng’ instead of a flag.

Btw, that’s how i see the union flag and st. george’s cross :p

This,
Why use flags at all. Not everyones knows what flag to associate with which country/language.
Just use “Eng”, “De”, “Fr” etc….. and leave the flags out of it.

Yes i think this would be the best solution. It gets quite confusing if you´re playing on EU servers and suddelny see an american flag pop up in the LFG tool.

Really? The language used in the game is American English, and not British English. Use of the UK flag would therefore be inconsistent with the actual language used.

Note also that the flag commonly associated with the UK is not the English flag, but rather the British flag. The English flag is a simple red cross on a white field, and would not be recognized by most people outside of England.

The usage of an American flag to denote the English language is also nothing new; in fact it is pretty wide-spread, and nobody should be confused by it. It is also to be fully expected in an American product, created by an American company, in the USA.

Reading the statements of some of the above posters, I do believe this topic is just more America-bashing.

I don’t care either way, but this seems like more much ado about nothing. Is it really that confusing that you need to take up development time?

I would actually support the use of both flags. American English and British English are not the same. However, I would have to say that the singular use of the British flag would not be the best idea to signify the use of either English language. Unfortunately there are many in the US who would have no clue what it means I has a sad for the lack of education in my country

Wouldn’t this just leave them open to complaints from other English-speaking countries, though?

Personally, I find the use of a US flag to denote English as a language setting to be a non-issue, even speaking as a Brit. If the game used British English instead of US English, I’d find the incongruity little odd at the most, but there really are far more pressing things to worry about, in my opinion.

or maybe Australia? Geez, the things people make a fuzz about. Anet is an american company, they speak English and probably identified that as “American”. If you are such a great European, then go the whole way, don´t play an american game. Pffff… This forum is really beginning to make me hate mankind.

So you never heard of NA servers? And it never occurred to you that an American flag would totally look like you were going to join an NA group with very high latency? With things like gobal TP and Megazergers that’s only natural.

That would never have occurred to me, because I know the difference between a language selection switch and a server selection screen.

I remember when I saw the Canadian flag used to denote english on BioWare’s site. Didn’t expect that. Guess it seemed like a normal choice for them, like the USA flag seemed logical for ANet. I’m from the UK (and therefore EU) and I don’t see it as insulting or anything, but it certainly didn’t communicate Language to me in the instant I saw it. For the design aspect alone, perhaps just altering the EU server client to display a UK flag, as suggested, makes more sense.

The thing is though., the flag in this case is used as an indication for the language that the PLAYERS use in the party advertising their party in the LFG tool. It has nothing to do with the client language. Therefore the current use of the American flag only causes for confusion, especially in EU.

There is no EU client, though. They’re one and the same. I’m an EU player who opted to play on an NA server, using an key from an UK box.

All their servers are based in the same place? It doesn’t matter EU or NA, you get the same amount of lag, bud. And I’m from America and I didn’t understand the flag meant English speaking only, I thought it just meant you’re from the US. Does it really matter? No…no it doesn’t…

With ANet’s transparency of communication? Yeah, right.

I also do know they’re different, and despite it that made me stop and wonder. What about those people who’re not used to reading forums or memorising insignificant technical details?
