Flax Wars 2 : Fighting over oil
I think they are a great way to transfer some wealth from those who can afford it to casual players who farm it because its so easily accessible.

This is a great point. They did this also with the new years event. That said, it seems sloppy to just use flax and require it for everything, rather than have a series of sensible ingredients, such as stones and crystals. My complaint is less about the pure cost, than the insanity of the flaxification of everything.
Also, the flax situation puts scribing out of reach of the average player. It is hard for me to imagine why they made it a crafting profession available to all (not just those with guild permissions) but then went on to put up the huge soft gate of material cost.
Anyone playing smart will 1) farm the hell out of them now so they have the option to sell now and buy later when they are cheaper or keep them for when they need them. Those are win/win options people.
It’s a time gate. Anet put them in everything simply to keep people from blasting through guild hall construction on day 1.
It’s going to take a long time to completely unlock a guild hall.

Better dig in for a long haul.

There’s already a time gate with Aetherium. They could have used that alone to hold back the entire upgrade process, if they really didn’t want guilds blasting through it.
You know there’s a problem with the design when a developer comes out and tells you where the secret farm is to get the seeds everyday.

Maybe the full arena with all upgrades but the base arena doesn’t take anywhere near that long and I’ve heard of at least one that already had it after a couple days.
The requirements for the base version aren’t very extreme and easily gotten if you had a large supply of influence to convert.

Arguably yes, but this both doubles as a way for folk hoofing it in the jungle to earn cash (just the secret farm spot in VB is ~2g) but also works as a timegate that decreases over time rather than stays static.
The only mistake they made with linseed oil was their massive MASSIVE overestimate of people’s willingness to harvest nodes.
I watched people walk right past flax on Friday when they were 40s a pop. Jon coming here and revealing a secret farm spot meant people were simply not farming at a level they had designed for.
I’d even argue that people still aren’t.

They originally designed it for 2 months, but lowered it to a few weeks or less in response to player feedback.
Atleast its possible to actually get these seeds – the flax fiber on the other hand for the scribe trade skill is near impossible to get through RNG it seems :s – I have harvest flax every day on 5 characters each day since release, and so far i’ve only recieved 2 flax fibers, where as you need about 150 flax fibers to make a rope, or 200 for a bag :/
And seeds prices are luckily also on their way down.
Honestly, the flax situation didn’t bother me at all until I got to scribing. I thought once that was opened up I would be able to do some fun stuff in my guild. Turns out, I need more flax. Not only that, we need a great deal of flax(2000) to get a furniture vendor in order to actually do some of the scribing stuff with that furniture (probably by throwing oil on it, and calling it fancy). [edit: yep, just checked, flax is used to fancy up furniture and even to make broken columns out of unbroken colums]

No idea. I just overheard in WvW TS one person telling another in their guild that the arena would be done in about a day and it was one of the big BG guilds. I have no idea if that meant unlocked or completed though I suspect they meant unlocked.
I’m inclined to believe what I heard given that it was chat between folks in the same guild.
Even if all they had was Arena Restoration 1&2 done, neither of those has a high price tag for a large, active guild.

Looks like they made the arena faster, but not the rest of the hall. You know the video where the big buildings rise up? I’m thinking that’s the part that takes months. Before then is tents and maybe small buildings after that.
ANet may give it to you.
We’re in the process of making it, just need a few more bits but I think we’ll be getting TP access first.

I’m curious, does the guild hall area expand? There’s some stuff blocked off by rocks that a guildy of mine didn’t see on his screen and was able to run through that led to some other areas.

You can pay an explorer to open up more, I think. It is one of the upgrades from the guild initiative notary. You need a lot of luck and 50 ley-line infused tools (included one charged quartz each) and 100 tomes of experience, so definitely something to work towards.
first thing of thought of when reading through this thread was
……….for flax sake
thats the way the flaxen crumbles….
In the last 24 hours flax has dropped from 16s to 11s. Which is about where it was before the nightfury recipe got published due to guild hall demand.
RIP City of Heroes
I have to say, flax is easy to come by. It’s a great source of income for those of us not using, and if you guys don’t want to, or don’t have the money to buy it, get your guild out to farm it, and you’ll probably get plenty. It is a GUILD effort after all, so having the whole guild pitch in kinda makes sense.
And if it’s a small guild, like mine, we can (or have to) wait until later due to lesser activity, lesser funds, and by that time the price will be more palatable to smaller guilds.
There is plenty of flax out there. New resources are ofc hard to come buy in bulk right after they come on the market. ANet saw this and even implementen some flax edits in that stuff specifically because it saw this issue.
Patience and money make the world go round.

I do agree with this. Flax certainly is having some positive effects. I just think there are some negative side effects. One is that it significantly gates scribing which is disappointing for me personally. Also, thematically, I wish there was more variety than just flax. As is, Flax is the ectoplasm of HoT.
except its a third cheaper to buy. and a hell of alot easier to get.

Well, per unit it is cheaper but compared to a single oil, its a whole different story, and that’s what you need in any recipe.
Also, ectos come regardless of game mode.
Linseed oil is only up 10% from the price before the nightfury recipe was made public but it too is down some 30% from 24 hours ago.

The ballad of Mac Twinsong
Come and listen to a story about a man named Mac
A poor pact commander, tryin’ to keep the war on tack,
And then one day he was rasing mastry tracks,
And there on the ground was a plant they call flax.
Linseed that is, growin’ gold, Tarir tea.
Well the first thing you know ol Mac’s a millionaire,
Guildmates said “Mac, that stuff’s not that rare”
Mac Said “Lets make a map of all the nodes that we have found”
So they took their bags of flax seeds and they moved them underground.
Gilded Hollow that is. Gold plated caves, Norn bartenders.
Well now its time to say good by to Mac and all his Crew.
And they would like to sell all of their excess flax to you.
So check the marketplace for all the sell orders you can
we’ll let you pay our bar tabs while we all go get a tan.
Y’all buy flax now, y’hear!

You pay a premium for impatience.
That’s how it’s been going with many content releases.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

True, but you have to consider that ectos are the most basic form of an item. ectos are used in recipes just like flax is. flax is the most basic of its type as well. Compare recipes containing ecto’s vs those containing flax. there is no comparison, ectos are 3-4 times more expensive in recipes then flax is in the oil(in comparable amounts used.)
for example, ectos are 35s atm, flax are 10s. to use the 20 flax
To make 1 jar of linseed you need 20 flax seeds (2g), 5 mill stones(25s), 1 mill basin (5s) for a total of 2g 30s. Thats the cost to produce one COMPLETED linseed oil.
the pure cost of JUST ectos is 35s. To properly compare base to base, you use a recipe that requires 20 ectos (remember we used 20 flax) which would cost at its BASE, 7g. That is over 3 times the price of what it costs to make a linseed oil.
The only way to make a comparison between linseed and ectos is to compare them under different values. I.E. compare oranges to apples. As it stands you were comparing them that way, but they are not comparably equal any other way.

Didn’t they make it a feature film reboot? … googling … Okay that was 1993. I remember the original 60s TV series. Keep forgetting that “kids” are unaware of anything before 2000.

Guild Halls should have been designed with content as the core of acquisition. It’s just a gold and time sink. They ruined the fun by entwining the in-game and by proxy, their real world economy into it. Terrible decision. Smaller guilds shouldn’t even be working on this as the seeds are great for personal profit atm. Larger guilds are still in the most desirable position because the wealth is distributed among more players.
There is zero reason why guild halls needed to be this way. They went the easy route with this stuff. All my guildies adored the quest to get our guild hall. Building it up is a joke.
If you have 100 people in your guild, have them all farm the flax farm under VB.
100x*~18 = 1800 flax per day for <30s of work.
If your whole guild isn’t contributing then of course it will take a while as it should.
