Q:

I know how magic find works and on the runes, armor weapons and everything except food it says the magic find stat is *+*XX% magic find.

For example:
Strawberries and Biscuts
Double-click to consume.
Nourishment (30m): 10% Magic Find.
+10% Experience from kills.

Versus
Strawberry Cookie
Double-click to consume.
Nourishment (30m): +30 healing
+10 Experience from kills.

Notice that the stats on the strawberry cookie all say +X stats, but the strawberry and biscuit says 10% Magic find and +10% experience….but not +10% Magic Find.

I’ve noticed that if I’m running around in full Magic Find gear and consume a MF food too, that my drop quality goes way down. I don’t have actual stats on with and without MF food, but it was quite noticeable to me.

My theory is that because the MF food does NOT say it is plus magic find, that it over rides any other magic find that you have on your gear.

The question: Does magic find food actually give you PLUS the percentage MF or does it set your magic find to that percentage and/or override what you have on your gear?

This is interesting. Probably would be helpful to know if we had some sort of Stat added to our hero panel to see if this is working with the current Magic find you have with your armor or is just plain overwriting it. Could be nice to add that “+” to it too.

Stats work this normal numbers like you have 300 vitality or something.

Magic find is a probability like say 40% flat chance. Thus it makes sense to be displayed in % even if its an additive. So say if you ate those strawberries youd have a 50% chance. And seeing the sheer amount of perceivable bonuses from my magic find food Im going to have to say its additive.

I think this is a bug. Some food items show +10 experience, but are actually +10%.
I guess we can wait for a dev.

It would be nice to see our percentage MF added to our hero panel too so we can 1. quickly see what our percentage is at and 2. we could see if the foods are + magic find or a flat this is your MF percentage.

Thus it makes sense to be displayed in % even if its an additive.

Yeah, I know why it’s a percentage, but other foods where it’s a % increase do show a +X% whereas all of the Magic Find foods just say X% without the +. The wiki shows them with the + but in game there is no plus sign. Look at the two screenshots I just took.

Spicy Pumpkin cookie says 30% Magic Find, +70 Condition Damage and +15% Experience from Kills.

And it’s not just because the MF is first on the list. The Orange Coconut Cake (screenshot) shows +10% Chill duration along with all of the other stat bonuses it gives.

So it still seems to me that the foods are not plus magic find because the + symbol is not there on ANY of the MF foods. I"ve just quit using the MF foods because my drops were better without them when wearing MF gear. They seem to me more useful to use on a character without MF to give them a slight boost without sacrificing gear stats.

I would love an answer from the devs on this.

I will be performing a test on this just to see the difference in drops over the next few days. Each day I will be farming 1(the same one each day) of my honey holes first farming naked then next day naked with Omnomberry bars(30%MF) next day with my MF gear(103MF no bars) then the next day with my MF gear(103MF and bars) next day with my Zerker set(no MF) then the next day with my Zerker set(+bars) to see what I get, this will be done for 1 hour each day documenting my drops for each day and I will post my results if interested. I’m doing it this way due to the DR on farming.

Unless there’ a MAJOR break in logic, the food should stack cumulatively.

What you should be more worried about is drop table manipulation.

Lets say I’m farming a mob for its fine materials. Let’s assume this under non-DR circumstances. Lets say the mob does a roll for loot 50% of the time, and if that roll is successful, it will drop a fine material 40% of the time instead of grey garbage. To get an effective 100% roll chance at the second stage of rolls I would need 150% magic find.

Does that then mean that any magic-find over 150% does absolutely nothing in affecting my drop chance for fine materials?

Edit: Farming for 1 hour with all those different sets is a bad sample size. I doubt you’d get refined results like that.

I can already tell you the zerker set vs naked is useless if you’re testing MF. The only difference is the number of mobs you’re able to kill in the 1 hour period.

I’d still like the food stats clarified by a developer for any stat that does not have a + or – next to the number. Theories are nice and it’s awesome for us to gather data, but they control the code and text on items so they should know how things are supposed to work and a bit more clarity would be nice.

One of the following is true:

  • the text on the food is wrong and a +/- symbol is missing
  • the text on the food is correct and it sets your stat at the number on the food overriding other factors for the time allotted.
  • the text on the food is correct but will not lower your stat if your gear provides a greater boost, but if your gear has less than the food stat bonus it is increased to what the food will provide for the duration of the food.

So if things are as I theorize the following is true for consumables:

  • Additive stat bonuses are denoted with a ‘+’ symbol.
+50 Power = adds 50 points to your power
+15% Condition duration = adds 15% more time to conditions you apply
  • Items that decrease the duration of a status are denoted with a ‘-’ symbol.
-28% Condition duration = conditions applied to you last 28% less time
-8% Stun duration = stuns applied to you last 8% less time
  • Consumables without a ‘+’ or ‘-’ symbol will set your stats at the given bonus.
7% Magic Find = Your magic find is 7% (unless you receive a greater boost from your gear?)
20% chance to steal life on critical = You have a 20% chance to steal life on critical (unless you receive a greater boost from your gear?)

I am curious as well, but have kept quiet about my opinion because I don’t like foil hat prejudice

I used to use magic find food all the time because I thought it would help. Then I noticed that every time I got a rare drop thinking “oh cool the food is working” I would notice the timer had expired on the buff shortly before I got that drop.

Figured it was just coincidence at first and just pressed on. But, once I had noticed it, I started keeping track of it when I got rare drops and the majority of the time it was when I didn’t have a MF food buff. l have since stopped using MF food altogether and I feel like I get more rare drops now than ever(well except the time before the November patch that ruined drops and ANET denies existing).

Vol is right though, there aren’t really any accurate ways to get a good enough sample to test this. Going to have to wait until a dev shows up to deny there is an issue

I’ve gotten several rares, I think I may have gotten an exotic as a drop once (gotten a couple from chests too) and precursors are but a dream and I have been playing since headstart too.

Magic find does help, but the question still is how does food affect your stats when there is no +/- or wording that indicates a plus or minus.

Ok here are my results as promised. Each farming run was done for 1 hour and each were done 24 hours apart to insure there was no DR present.

Day 1: Naked no MF jewelry or MF nourishment
28 Dark Stained Claws
1 Vicious Fang
10 Large Claws
8 Salvageable Hides
13 Potent Blood
1 Powerful Blood
3 Whites
4 Blues
3 Greens
————-
Day 2: Naked with MF Jewelry(35% MF) and Omnomberry Bar(30% MF); 65% MF total
13 Large Fangs
1 Vicious Fang
36 Dark Stained Claws
10 Salvageable Hides
2 Unidentified Dyes
15 Vials of Powerful Blood
1 Vial of Powerful Blood
3 Whites
1 Blue
3 Greens
————-
Day 3: 68% MF Gear only, no MF jewelry or nourishment
30 Dark Stained Claws
17 Large Fangs
4 Vicious Fangs
20 Vials of Potent Blood
2 Vials of Powerful Blood
7 Salvageable Hides
5 Whites
2 Blues
1 Green
1 Wooden Boxed Rare
————-
Day 4: MF Gear(68%), MF Jewelry(35%) and Omnomberry bar(30%); 133% MF total
34 Dark Stained Claws
15 Large Fangs
2 Vicious Fangs
19 Vials of Potent Blood
4 Vials of Powerful Blood
8 Salvageable Hides
1 Unidentified Dye
5 Whites
2 Blues
2 Greens
Now you guys can draw your own conclusions, my take is that drops are only MARGINALLY BETTER due in my opinion to the speed of kills while in armor and not the percentage of MF one has, if it does help it’s only MINIMAL. They need to reword the MF percentages to be, as an example, Omnomberry Bars should read .30% MF. You be the judge.

Since having my Magic Find set I do get less junk and more usable items, I still think my exotic drop rates are cursed but that’s just me. I’ve gotten maybe one exotic drop since beta & pre-launch….

The pitiful rare & exotic drop rate I get even with full MF gear is depressing, but I play because it’s fun…..though I play less often now because of how crappy my drops are most of the time.

Ok, let’s have a look at Chocolate Omnomberry Cream, which has a “20% boon duration” bonus.

Note that there is no + before the 20%. Are you suggesting that it overwrites your original boon duration or sets it to 20%?

The only time where +/- matters is in food with a bonus/penalty to condition duration. Because in that case, it differentiates between conditions you inflict on enemies, and conditions you receive.

Since this thread started I started playing with and without my 40% mf food to see if I will notice a difference.

If the theory is correct, that mf food overwrites existing mf I have 40% mf (during boon, which I "always"have).

Without the food I have about 85% m from gear.

If its just a tooltip error and the food adds to existing mf I have 40% from food + 85% from gear.

I really want to know if im being fooled eating this food, but I havent seen any consistent tendencies, I probably play too little. So ill keep trying like this, since anet wont comnent on the topic, which is really bad cr.

I can say that i farmed with the food and had bland drops, no rares. I let the food run out, after 30 mins, and within 5 minutes I had 3 rares drop, from the same farming spot. I know that can be just rng pulling a prank.

There is nothing to comment on, really.

Every monster has a chance to drop a range of items, and mf improves the odds of it dropping the more rare of those items. You don’t have a flat x% chance of doing anything, it’s the monster that has a chance to drop something, your mf simply increases that chance.

There is nothing to “overwrite”, because of how magic find works. No need for complicated theories to explain just another tooltip error, especially considering how many tooltip errors and inconsistencies there are.

I actually posted a bug report on this kind of things.

Maybe this is coincidence, maybe not, but I have experienced similar situations.

I was farming Karka Shells for 30 min with MF food before I ran out, I got good drops, not great but good. After the food “bonuses” ran out I saw an immediate increase in rare drops.

I have 118% MF without food with a supposed 148% with food.

Maybe this is a bug, maybe its a tooltip error, maybe its just our minds playing tricks.

Some clarity from a dev would be very much welcomed though.

My theory is that because the MF food does NOT say it is plus magic find, that it over rides any other magic find that you have on your gear.

Let me propose a different theory. What if the magic find for food overwrites only your base stat and not the additional bonuses from gear? Since there is no way to know what the starting stat is, let’s assume it’s 0. You eat some food and the base is now 10%. Then your gear is figured in, 5% or 100% or whatever. After all, you can only have one food buff going at a time. This makes more sense to me than having your +50% bonus from Superior Runes go away because you decide to eat some Applesauce. As for food being intended for lower levels, some foods you can’t even eat until level 80.

I haven’t done any testing, just some food for thought.
