I’m going to propose an odd assortment of changes, let me know what you think.

This is not a suggestion (yet). I am merely toying with some hypothetical situations and seeing if any good can come from it.

Part 1

A lot of people wish dyes were account-bound, because they feel it’s too restrictive of their resource to buy one for each character.

Dyes become account bound, but at a cost

Part 2

A lot of crafting materials are stacking up in people’s inventories and trading post auctions and serving no purpose. Supply is outweighing demand for a lot of them.

Dyes now require ingredients (like lemons, bronze, silver, blood, etc..) for changes to be applied.

In addition, applications will require the purchase of a vendor-sold item that costs coin, like 1 silver.
Something like… “Vial of Clear Dye” – Takes on the colours of whatever you mix into it.

Example:
To apply “Lemon Dye” to your set template, you’d need 1 Vial of Clear Dye, 2 Lemons.

Part 3

A lot of people really hate waypoint fees. While the gold-sink argument stands, it is not excluded from the possibility of change.

With the addition of the gold-sink of dyes, the fee can be reduced

Way Point fees are severely reduced
(Example: level80s would go from Rata Sum to Ebonhawke for under 1.5s)

My expected results

  • Way point fees are reduced – And compensated by the new Dye gold-sink.
  • The penalty for ‘Defeat’ is reduced, making players less anxious to explore low-traffic zones.
  • Dyes are shared among all characters
  • Identified Dye prices will drop dramatically
  • Players will take more time to pick colour-schemes that better suit their taste (though, with a wider variety of options, that shouldn’t be hard)
  • A more steady consumption of the infinite resources people gather from nodes, beyond use for crafting.

Being able to explore more freely is something everyone wants. Dyes are something we all toy with, but at a more leisurely optional pace.
I, for one, would not mind taking a little more care to choose the dye-scheme I want in favor of account-bound dyes and lower travel fees. But, that’s merely my personal opinion.

Unexpected results

  • Whatever you, the readers, can come up with

What would you think of such a shift in costs in the game?

“Bleeding, Poison, Confusion, Torment, they all look delightful on you.”

Lv80s: Guard, Thief, Necro. Renewed my Altaholic’s card on the HoT Hype-Train. Choo choo~

Solving problems by creating problems? I see politics in your future.

Just make dyes account wide (like they were supposed to be) and scale waypoint fees based on the zone (I don’t get more silver for completing low level hearts at 80).

On the other hand there are people who enjoy having a lot of dyes to choose from and don’t see waypoints as an issue since the world is not that big compared to other games. How would your system benefit them?

Plus this would mean creating hundreds of new recipes instead of working on really new content.
