I was so disappointed when I got that set for my female Sylvari Ranger (back before preview).
I was expecting the wonderful coat from the male set, yet I ended up with a set that unnecessarily flashes skin.

Please note that due to restrictions placed on my account, I am only allowed 1 post per hour.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.

Shorts and boots? More likely a schoolgirl skirt and boots.

No, but in all seriousness, it is completely ridiculous that some female armors have to look like that. (I assume that’s what you’re going for.) I agree that it’s not something they should do, at all.

For a game that claimed to be different from any other MMO, they sure didn’t do away with the concept of adding cleavage to reel in the lowbrow.

I shouldn’t have to dye armor the same color as my character’s skin or acquire fine transmutation stones because she’s going to war half-naked otherwise.

Funnily enough, Charr and Asura don’t suffer from this. Oh right, that’s because they can’t have big knockers.

Now if that’s what you are actually complaining about that we need less clothes then I agree

That armor on top is hot but not revealing. Gw2 doesn’t have any armor that resembles this:

Just wanted to chime in with my 2 cents.

1. What guys find attractive is often different than what girls find attractive, so the argument that they must be identical is flawed. However, I am perfectly fine with making them identical.

2. Most of the female armor is not that revealing. I hunt around for it myself and have very few choices. A lot of the revealing armor doesn’t even look that great. I have pretty much 1 choice on my medium armored thief and 3 choices on my ele/mesmer. Wish there was more variety.

3. I agree with that point above about real life standards. Many girls do wear very little by their own choice. That said, many guys also run around shirtless. May as well make it even, but by no means stop the revealing armor! (we need more!!)

Trivial? To you, maybe.

This is what is known as an ‘example’. If it were the only shoddy female armor in the game, I’d be less bothered. Thing is, you pretty much pick between trench coat or boobs. It’s especially bad for light armor.

And like I already said, I shouldn’t need gem store transmutation stones because an armor set was designed stupidly for one gender.

I for one would ask for two things.

Artistically: LESS SPIKES. Seriously, whats the deal with spikes? They’ve been there since GW1. It should be already time for them go away.

Technically: Less clipping. It gets pretty frustrating when you research for you customized “mix-and-match” look and see it totally ruined by bad clipping. It gets even weirder when you try to take some “heroic” posed screenshots. “Lets see about that….get a toon..find the perfect background..strike a pose and…oh kitten! The sword is passing tru her legs, nevermind, lets kill some dredge..”

There should be a choice for players for both males and females. If people want to enjoy the fantastical world they play in with magic and lasers and minotaurs and undead by running around in skimpy armor that shows off how innately and conspicuously attractive their characters are, let them. Similarly, if you want to run around fully armored and boasting the thickest plate mail that money can buy to protect you from all sorts of enemies, go for it.

It is not for you, or anyone, to decide what others should or should not be able to do in a game of this make. I encourage and implore the developers to continue making skimpy and modest armor, so long as there are numerous options for both within all three armor types and across both genders.

Oh really?

Not counting the low-cut outfits, I count 8 case of gaps in armor whose only purpose is to show boobs.

Given that the male equivalents don’t have random holes in the middle of the chest sections, I’d say it’s a rather lopsided use of cleavage.

How about armor that looks the same on both genders, instead of morphing into a completely different skimpy design for females?

Or ‘stylized’ (sexualized) and ‘protective’ options for armor? You know, so I can have a character wear the set I really like except for the open chest, without that open chest?

Likewise if someone’s ‘tastes’ so direct them they can put a peephole in otherwise complete armor. It’s quite a simple change for most armor sets (though obviously not my original example’s).

An armor design by the same name for two different genders is really two different armor sets bound by the aesthetic principles of the name and lore. They are allowed and, indeed, encouraged to be different. That is 3D artistic license at its finest, and I think arguing to take it away from the development team would make the art in the game less diverse than it already is and more stale.

I also think you need to consider the workload of having multiple ‘variants’ of the same armor set, especially considering that these armors also need to exist for every single race and gender combination (currently numbers to 10). It’s unrealistic to expect or demand that every single armor set have a ‘modest’ and ‘skimpy’ option, thus doubling the effective armor sets they’d need to model, though if ANet were to ever make that happen I certainly wouldn’t complain.

I believe the current way they do armor sets is acceptable and enjoyable. You can preview armor before you get it anyway, so it doesn’t hurt the player any.

GW2 actually has a good variety of armours. If you want to look sexy you can, if you want more coverage, you can too. Plenty of variety and plenty of pieces to mix and match and play around with until you get the look you want. In GW1, there really was only one set that kept my ele warm in the Shiverpeaks. Here, I have a whole host of varieties.
The thing that gets me with the armour is the lack of decent head pieces. Most are either really ugly and the ones that aren’t often clip. And norn, poor norn, the tailors in GW2 really don’t take their height into consideration.

So the same piece of armor should cover a male but be boob cups for a female?

There have to be some similar factors for both genders in a set of armor for it to identify with. Whether it’s actually armor or glorified lingerie seems like a pretty kitten fundamental factor to me.

You’re the one arguing that what is there should be changed, so the onus is on you to provide a cogent reason as to why it should be changed.

As it stands, the armor sets use the same textures, carry similar elements and styles (especially true in the image in the OP), but use different models for the different genres. One just happens to be modest, and the other more body-showy, which is entirely within the artistic license of the developer. Quite frankly, as a new player, I perfectly associated these two armors together as one ‘set’ without even so much as knowing their names or where they come from. Their artistic similarities are undeniable.

Because the helm, shoulders, gloves and bottom of the feet are identical, obviously.

Meanwhile the chestpiece (carrying down over the legs, so the majority of the character) is nearly unrecognizable. A floating boob-cover for females, full layered armor and coat (with belt and baldric) for males.

It’s completely disruptive with the flow of the armor and they have nothing to do with each other. Sexualization of a key piece ruins an entire set. Now, if they were equally sexualized, whatever. It’d just be an ugly set.

I’m amazed you’re even still trying to argue this. ‘Artistic’ is no longer an appropriate excuse for anything you slap it on, you know.

I am perfectly fine with skin showing (regardless of gender) and believe players should have choices. But male version = covered up and female version = skimpy is a pet peeve of mine. It just reeks of sexism.

Of course I can understand there being some variation in the “sexy” level between genders for any given set (for stylistic reasons), but I think they could have made this set more balanced fairly easily. It isn’t as though there are very many revealing medium armor sets, anyway, and it wouldn’t have killed them to make the very few they do have revealing on males as well.

Funny thing though, that is actually one of my favorite medium armor sets for male characters. Pity it costs a fortune though because everyone wants it for their female characters. xD

Edit: huh, the OP got in trouble for this post, yet it was not locked? Weird. Probably shouldn’t have posted here, oh well.

There are a number of armors in the game that suffer from this imbalance in how skin is revealed, and in some cases it’s unfortunate because the female versions would, sometimes, look much better if there were less skin. Case in point:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Masquerade_armor – Just one case of skimpyness that really does not call for it.

Now, I’m not against more revealing types of armors for both genders, but there needs to be a little more thought into when it should be used and how often and there needs to be a sense of equality between both genders or else the arists just come off as sexist or whatever.

That armor on top is hot but not revealing. Gw2 doesn’t have any armor that resembles this:

Saying “X does things worse, so you shouldn’t complain” isn’t valid. That’s like telling a kitten victim “Yeah, well in certain countries you have to marry your kittenist,”

Just because you’ve seen people that show a lot of skin doesn’t mean that everything should show more skin. I don’t mind revealing outfits if they are both in moderation and practical. Protip: exposed neck isn’t practical.

As much as I love GW2, their female outfit designs can be pretty terrible. Most male outfits are interesting and cool, and the female counterparts are “Let’s see how much boob window we can get into this outfit,”. There’s nothing wrong with sexy or with showing skin, it’s knowing the difference between good design and sexualization.

EDIT: Well, it seems the word I used is blocked. For clarification, kitten is unconsentual/forced sex.

The game is not Crossdresser Wars 2, there is going to be a difference between male and female armor. And frankly, ANet has done pretty well giving armor that appeals to both those who like fanservice in the game and those who do not. And even the fanservice provided is incredibly non-intrusive, that picture shows nothing that you won’t see a woman wearing in the street today, well except that it’s… y’know… armor with a full helmet and all.

Really I think it’s the male version that got kitten here. Yet another long coat as if every other set didn’t already have a long coat. I want male leather chest piece that stops at the waste please! My Charr engi’s legs need to be seen, they are strong and powerful, why must they be shrouded in ugly bulk!

Yes do away with long coats for medium armor! >:( Long coats here, long coats there, long coats everwhere!

Also, do away with those light armor bathrobes. Everywhere I see, male in bathrobes. Sheesh. I mean it.

Yeah…the light armour is the worst for this. If your going to make the female armour skimpy at least do the same for the male. Though they do far better than most MMO’s (not that being better than most MMO’s says much since female in most MMO’s seems to be either child or fantasy themed stripper). For once the female version of non human races aren’t made to look human regardless of what their male counter parts look like, the animation and poses for women aren’t sexualized and for the most part the armor is fine. I don’t like all of them but different strokes for different folks.
Guild wars 2 has many armours that aren’t skimpy so its not a huge deal that a few are and many of the ones that are don’t give of the vibe of “designed specifically to be jacked off too” .
The starting light armour I despise though since you start with it and it’s a skin is used for random drop armour all through the game. The armour that is chosen to introduce people to all the scholar professions is the one in which the guys get a cool long coat and the girls get a frilly belt? Really? I would rather fight naked and in fact my Norn Ele did fight naked until I could buy different because a large tattooed Norn in that was just too stupid.
Teir 3 human cultural medium and light armour kitten es me off a little bit too because I actually like the male versions and wish we just had that tweaked to fit a female body rather than under boob armour and a decorated bra. Unfortunately it also pretty popular so we might be getting more of this in the future.

If the next set of medium armor is in any way shape or form a long coat I quit11!!! The whispers armor top would have been amazing without the balloon bottom attached to it.

I would love a choice of either, I play asura and charr and the armour skins rarely look nice

Would be nice if there was a coat slot as well as chest, so you could hide shoulders/coat/head depending on how you wanted your character to look.

I +1’ed this because I agree with you on the principle of free choice and equality, though that is a slippery slope in terms of social norms. There may be a community of players that would love to see male Norn frolicking about in banana hammocks, but I don’t believe that is (as of yet) as widely accepted as scantily clad females.

I’m not voicing an opinion for what’s morally right and wrong. My opinion is only that some things sell, and some things kill the game.

where are those? been 7 months and they haven’t added a single piece of armor but fund time to add many weapon skins…

Fact: every Thief tells you to “l2p” when the subject is to nerf stealth.

There nothing wrong with female version. Are you a religious nut?

If you want more revealing male armor. Ask for it.
