Just stick with any profession, and learn to be proficient in it. That means knowing how to apply boons, remove conditions, and learning combo fields and finishers.

After that, determine what you want to do with that class. There’s different builds (stats and traits) for pvp and pve.

Once you do this, then choosing a main profession is just based on what weapons and utilities you find most enjoyable.

@Jay, Thief can be very high DPS but also as a result is very squishy. However, due to Thieves beings able to access a lot of stealth and mobility, they can quickly exit a dangerous scenario.

It can also be a very condi-heavy class.

It is absolutely beastly in PvP and WvW if played well. A proficient roaming Thief can pick off a small group by seperating them, stealthing and dealing deadly blows from behind.

In PvP, a stealthing thief is deadly if it isn’t countered quickly enough whilst he/she is visible. As a bit of a PvP noob, my ways of countering thieves are to keep my health above half (to reduce the dps from heartseeker) and to make sure my back isn’t turned towards the enemy (backstab is a killer!).

Because it is a very mobile class, it is pretty fast to do map completion on as distances are quickly covered by (spamming heartseeker, for example.) A lot of people say that thieves are quick to level because of their speed.

I’m not sure how well they do in groups (e.g. zergs, dungeons, fractals). Although they can deal huge damage, they don’t seem to be the most supportive type (apart from dealing a load of blinds). Perhaps somebody else can fill you in there.
