Forced to kitten DPS.
I agree. Since we have an awesome, new mechanic that is both fun to use and provides great support for your allies as well as for yourself (combo fields), I’d focus/build supporting more around that. It’s just so rewarding and satisfying to use that I really started to enjoy supporting even though I used to hate that role before! Wombo combos a tons of fun! That way the devs can ensure nobody becomes merely a buffbot/healbot and the game doesn’t need to step back to the boring tank/dps/healer trinity. People just need to be more aware of their surroundings and can choose if they want to utilize the combo field, which leads to more dynamic and fun gameplay and best of all: Ther is no need for healers or tanks, since everybody can utilize your combo fields in order to heal or protect themselves. This is pure awesomeness! The devs could even leave contribution as it is, but an additional % of buff and combo field damage should count to your contribution, if you provided them. You don’t take it away from the person who dealt it, it just adds on top of their damage so you benefit from setting up wombo combos and supporting allies. Adding mitigated damage to contribution would help, too though.
As for the rez, yes. They need to make it count towards contribution as well. It feels so natural and logical to me, that I didn’t even knew it doesn’t count.
The game is awesome. I bet the devs will keep doing a great job and making sure this game stays the most fun mmorg ever created.

Just one other person is concerned about this?
Not really having a problem with this, I always help downed players and I always get gold status in events I was a part of for the majority of the engagement. I’m a shortbow ranger, so take that for what its worth, but I feel autoattack should be enough to get your gold status even when you do take time to revive others, and if I’m not mistaken, a few classes either have talents or traits that offer healing bonus based on attacks.

You really shouldn’t DPS kittens. You’ll make them sad.

Yeah, there are a few group boss fights where I stopped to rez one or two people/dropped a couple of Geysers in there where I did not receive gold credit (sometimes got silver, often bronze) although I’d been there the entire time.
It would be nice if other activities, like rezzing people who had been engaged with the boss recently, also counted toward participation.

Ok one of the biggest gripes i had over other traditional theme park MMOs was the entire kittenery that persisted. The 3rd party mods that tracked your DPS or HPS.
GW2 offered for me hope to avoid this happening, but instead it has shoehorned all players into DPS only when it comes to events. The only way you get contribution in DEs is by DPS, if i take the time to revive someone i risk not getting a gold medal for the event. This is wholly wrong if the intent from ANet was for the players to be cooperative and play in a more group minded mentality.
As it is i would prefer a larger support role in the game, no i am not expecting to be just a healer or just a buffer, but i want to get credit for assisting my community not just by massive DPS all the time. It will get to the point where no one wants to revive another in the middle of combat because its not helping you get credit for the end of the event.
If i am keeping others up from downed state, alive from heals, deflected damage from blocking, and making them more effective from my boons i am applying, i should get credit for that also, not just from attacking. This all smacks as a huge discrepancy on ANet’s behalf.
This is 2012, there have been lots of games where the players contribute to the team by not just doing damage, and they get compensation for there efforts. When we didn’t we made it an issues and it got changed, why was this not implemented prior to release ?
Not matter what anyone of you say, this is an issues that needs to be addressed by someone from ANet, not ignored and relegated to the back burner.
Dradin, I’m somewhat in the same boat as you, wanting to be a support class. However, I’ve managed to rez multiple people and still get a gold medal for events. If I were you, I’d drop an aoe, doesn’t have to be that powerful, to at least tag a bunch of mobs, then go about healing. I haven’t run into any issues where I felt like I deserved a gold and didn’t get it.
Heck, I’ve gotten a gold for hitting the last mob twice or so in events before. I feel as though Anet is EXTREMELY generous in giving us credit/gold medals.
Just curious…. but do you deal ANY damage to the boss? Or do you only run around rezzing? If the second that may be why… because you’re not counted as actually participating in the event because you’re not effecting any of the enemies or npcs in the event (granted if you rez an npc you will get more credit towards the event then rezzing a player). All i would suggest is reflecting a few projectiles or something back into the enemy or just throwing out auto attacks inbetween rezzing people to ensure that the event realizes you’re still “there” and then just going along like usual.
I’m a ranger (switching over to ele because zomg so many skillz!) and when i’m playing i normally just try to throw as many buffs up on my allies as physically possible as well as picking people up, but i’ll without a doubt throw attacks at the mobs because hey, why not? not to mention using magnetic surge/whirling defense to keep low health allies safe (be inbetween them and enemies) gives you tons of credit due to all the “damage” you’re dealing by reflecting enemies attacks.
In short, make sure you’re dealing -some- damage, because otherwise the event will register you as gone, where as if you keep the events attention and rez people and that sort of people you’ll have no issues.

what the hell is Kitten DPS?
yeah i don’t get the title but i’m sure they’ll work on giving credit for DE’s after they get things smoothed out. there are more pressing things to attend to first

There was a centaur boss in Harathi Hinterlands I believe that spawned several times while we were in the zone. Besides rezzing/dropping a couple of heals/dropping Static Field (mostly to create stacks of vulnerability), I spent the rest of the time DPSing. Only got silver each time.
Most events don’t seem too bad for this, but a few definitely require you to do a full DPS burn to get credit. It encourages you to play selfishly, just in case.

Why has this problem never happened to me?
JAH Bless – Equal Rights and Justice for all.
Justice And Honor – Tarnished Coast.
I think this is one of the most valid complaints I’ve seen.
I often don’t revive people because then I don’t get the max amount of EXP I could get. It’d be awesome if ANet decided to take into account people who revived others.
I suppose I am concerned about this, as an Elementalist that pops between fire and water, but prefers water. I know I’m not a healer, and the ‘H’-word is never to be uttered anywhere, and that’s fine. I do a really good job of swapping between my sets, and will often times do it as soon as the attunement timers are up.
I also love stopping to help revive people, especially if I can keep them from dying. I probably lose out on a lot of reward. I don’t really let it drive how I behave.
Having said that, it would be nice if I could behave the way I wanted to, and then I was rewarded the same as everyone else. I’m sure it’s something they’ll consider and tweak over time.
Just to explain the strange title since the forum filter is so strange it changed my word. "E"peen to kitten. I had no idea it was a curse word.
My Mesmer does a fair amount of rezzing in events, and I too never get less than Gold unless I’m pretty late to the party. If you’re going to rez, you have to work that bit harder at DPS-ing when you’re not rezzing, I guess. AoE tagging definitely helps (for Mesmer that’s Chaos Storm, which is a buff/debuff that also does moderate AoE damage).
I am a Ranger and I was able to get Golds while getting insane XP from rezzing people. Now I DID notice that I would start getting Bronze and Silver for two reasons. Either the mobs were about 3 levels higher than me and I was hitting them for a lot less than an equal level, or I had out-leveled my gear and I hit for crap.
So stop whining and upgrade your gear buddy.
@Rainshine, huh maybe i managed to avoid most of those events or something? Normally the ones i get silver on are the ones i show up late to… Regardless, i’d rather play more supportive even if it isn’t super rewarding because i ALWAYS play that way in MMO’s not gonna stop now!! And in most mmos/online games i’ve played support always get shafted so i’m just kinda used to it lol

My highest leveled character is a ranger.. But I haven’t had this issue on any of my characters (except for the below). If someone is downed I try to get to them to rez them. As long as the boss isn’t AOE’ing on top of them.
I’ve only ever gotten silver or bronze under a couple of conditions.
1) I end up at the event way late and it completes within seconds of my arrival.
2) The even is 3 or more levels above me.
Otherwise I’ve always gotten gold.
I fought the dragon in Sparkfly Fen last night and got Bronze, despite the fact I was there when the event started, didn’t stop to rez anyone (primarily because the dead were too far away from me) and only stopped DPS when feared. Level 80 Ranger switching LB/SB, with both bows doing around 980 max damage.
On the other hand, today, I was in Fireheart Rise and couldn’t be bothered stopping to help the nearby escort so I fired off a single arrow as I ran past… and got a gold medal for my effort, or lack thereof.
Something does seem to be off with how we get credit, and I tend to agree that if the use of Boons/Conditions, combo fields, healing and rezzing means you’re going to get less credit than someone who goes straight DPS, then people are going to stop doing those things altogether.

Are you serious? try reading the other posts on these forums before u say that, there are bout 7 million about “How serious the problem is that healing and support does not contribute to rewards.”
I am certain they are working hard on it, and I have read in multiple places that it’s apparently a bug and that it is supposed to contribute just as much as dps.
On one hand, supporting during events should be recognized as contribution.
On the other hand, I often leave events half way through because I know I’ve already done enough to guarantee me gold.
