Forced to Rename Character - Dumbarse
You are that outraged and attached to a moronic name like “Dumbarse”?
Thanks for the laugh dude… although it is sad that 6 year olds the world over will have one less handle to giggle at when it passes.
When I logged in today I received a message that I must rename my character before continuing. Apparently it was offensive. The name being used was Dumbarse. I’ve used that character name since I first started playing GW2 and on quite a few other games and no one has ever complained. I’m not sure who’s offended and what decade the moderators are living in, but you can listen to the conversations of a bunch of 3rd graders at almost any school and hear far worse language. I will change my character name and will probably continue playing GW2 for a little longer so that I don’t feel I’ve completely wasted my money. I will however not purchase any future Arena Net games and will tell anyone I know not to waste their money as well. I believe that Arena Net has the right to make and enforce any rules they want for any stupid pc reasons they might have, but I also have the choice not to buy their products in the future. I’m waiting for them to force me to change the name of my guild “Masticating Thespians” since someone might be offended by it as well.
It’s not the moderators, it’s other players that reported you for having an offensive name. As far as I can tell the list of behaviors that you can be reported for and receive a ban is pretty broad, it just requires another player to find it offensive and report you. One time in an area one player said in map chat “anything up?” referring to events and another player responded with “my dick!”. Right after this three other players started flaming him in map chat for being offensive and said they reported him. I’ve also noticed that it seems PvE players are more easily offended than PvP players, as most people in WvW, myself included, say some pretty offensive things in chat and I’ve never been banned nor know of other WvW players that were banned (same in sPvP). On the other hand, in PvE zones if you say anything that is less than “spongebob nice” in map chat it seems a swarm of players will report you in 10 seconds flat. Not sure if you enjoy PvP, but you will probably be able to get away with more offensive behavior as the PvP player base doesn’t seem to be bothered by it as much. I agree a lot of it doesn’t make much sense though, for example you can get banned for swearing if someone reports you, yet Anet makes the swear filter an option that you can toggle.
It’s a pretty purile name but far from offensive by my own standards. But you have to admit, if you called someone your chosen name then you would either be joking with them or insulting them. Seeing as a name has no context to differenciate between the two then it’s an insult. Any insulting name is offensive by their standards and not tolerated.
You really should have seen it coming.
I really hope they don’t decide to put a ban on the combination (you gotta be kidding me they did put a ban on it on the forum, hahaha. Here’s to hoping they don’t make a ban on the names themselves and I get caught in the net) I’ve had enough trouble with that in other games on a handle I’ve used for years.
While I understand your frustration, it’s pretty much sesame street when to comes to the naming policy.

I’m not that attached to the name, it’s the stupidity of anyone thinking they need to be the pc police and moderate character names that few would find truly offensive.
Well,i’d have to say, from reading this thread you did pick the right name.

To be fair, you are trying to get across an “offensive” word by spelling it differently.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! You do that, dude. You go right ahead. Man, I wish I could be there when you go around telling people not to buy any games made by ArenaNet, because they wouldn’t let you call yourself a Dumbarse.
Seriously though, I do get your point — it’s the principle of the matter, more than the actual name itself. But, censorship happens. It’s not cool, and what is and isn’t allowed can be downright insane, but if they allow kids to play this game then they are accountable for whatever content may work its way in there — even character names.
My best guess about why your name was “allowed” in other games, is because you didn’t get caught. They have some automated processes in place to disallow certain words or phrases, but they can’t be everywhere at once. If it doesn’t get reported, they may not ever see it.
I would never report anyone for that, and the players who did probably have a stick up their “dumbarse” as it were, but I don’t know why you’re surprised. This is par for the course, for most online communities.

I think the choice of the name “Dumbarse” was infantile and it wouldn’t endear me to you as a player. Not report-worthy, but it wouldn’t make me want to party with you. :P
Incidentally, “ kitten #8221; IS the way that it’s spelled in many former British colonies.
Ah, if it was for me there would be a permaban for such a thing.
Why? Because If you name a character with such words it means you’re far from being mature or intelligent enough to be of any contribution to the community anyways.
You’re just a waste of database space and server player slots.

I’d have reported it also. Not because I think it’s offensive, but because it’s a very tired, very crude, very blant “joke”(I guess it was funny the first time smb said it…not any more though). Oh, and smb was actually asking a question about the map and not smb’s pixel-related panty-situation. And I have low tolerance when it comes to childish behaviour.
Aside from that…seriously…? Dumbarse? That reminds me of a Tera guild that made a huge fuss after their name -Japanese animated adult movie- -Western adult movie-stars got changed to Ice-cream Lovers. It’s sad that GW2 mods don’t have that sense of humour xD The Tera guys would’ve probably given you a much better new name… Dumbarse…like, for real?!
It should also be pointed out that the TOS does say that ANet has the right to force a name change to any potentially offensive names, up to and including alternative spellings of swear words, gods (mythological or otherwise), and even copyrighted names from other games.

If someone has an offensive name and it’s reported. Arenanet has the right to change it.

American perhaps? Like a lot of the English language American’s spell it differently than pretty much everyone else in the English speaking world

Dumb" kitten quot; is closely referred to the american version of Dumb… well I hope you know what word I’m thinking of. Which in most societies calling someone that word is offensive.

Hello everyone.
Thanks for all your insight and discussion. Kokoweef, you could certainly try to contact Customer Support to revise this action although do not build your hopes up that much. As the thread has derailed already and offers no real meaningful discussion about the game, we proceed to close it.
Thanks for your understanding.
