As you may recall, several weeks ago we announced the creation of our Guild Wars 2 Forum Specialist Program. We received a lot of applications from highly qualified Guild Wars 2 players, and today we’re happy to introduce you to the first specialists to join the program:

  • Rising Dusk.2408: Dungeons and Fractals
  • Marmatt.8590: WvW
  • Riku.4821: PvE
  • The Gates Assassin.9827: PvP
  • Wolfey.3407: PvP

As you can see, we have two specialists covering PvP, and we’re doing this because PvP is a broad topic that can change through even subtle skill balances or game changes. The same could be said of other elements of the game, of course, so we’re open to additional specialists in other areas, as well.

Our primary focus now is to identify profession-specific specialists and bring them on board to participate in the profession sub-forums.

If you’d like to make a contribution as a forum specialist, please let us hear from you! You can learn about applying on the forum thread linked above.

YAY!!! Great job guys!!

Be careful though, there already is much trolling about certain specialists because of a perceived lack of credentials.

Please remember to make your jobs clear in what you are doing, and don’t let the haters hate. I think this is a great step in the right direction, and hopefully we’ll see some great things come out of it!

I think this is definitely a step in the right direction toward getting your players input, from the players to the developers, I am slightly confused why there are 2 PvE (PVE general and fractals/dungeons), and 2 PvP. Yet there is only one WvW one, which makes you wonder why. WvW is by far the most expansive and in depth game mode that GW2 has. Requiring more player hours than any other aspect of the game, so why is it this game mode is being pushed to the back shelf again with only 1 forum specialist? Personally speaking I have played every aspect of this game and honestly WvW is the only aspect worth repeating over and over again due to the human factor, namely each opponent is different. This also creates a number of unique issues that have been present since launch, yet never addressed (food trolling, siege trolling, etc…) the list could go on and on for pages, but the bigger issue is why is WvW once again taking a back seat in development? Hell EOTM doesn’t even have a forum specialist and that’s a beast of its own with unique mechanics to WvW.

WvW could possibly use an additional one, sure, but there’s a reason why each other mode has two.

PvP is where the balance team is really focused. Even small changes can have much bigger impacts than you otherwise expect.

PvE and Dungeons are two very different beasts and need to be treated as such. Dungeons, while yes, being PvE, are much more limited in party size, and as such, party interaction becomes more important and composition as well.

I would not be opposed to a second WvW specialist, but truthfully speaking, it inherits a lot of the same factors that the others do. There aren’t a lot of factors unique to WvW, but there are some things that cause problems there and not in PvE or PvP.

The same could be said of WvW, you have the large zergs stacked on commanders, your solo roamers, and your havoc groups. So right there you have three different types of fights happening, on all different scales. You even have unofficial GvG’s which should be much more focused on (considering that is what made GW1 so popular with top guilds). They could actually compete in a fair impartial match, with room for people to watch the two guilds go head to head, the times were even set and posted some days so people knew when to go watch what. To me it seems like even as the game ages these modes of play are being ignored. This is only going to lead to more players leaving the game for ‘greener pastures’, while they throw band-aids at the issues rather than addressing them.

Having 5 alt accounts I have seen a larger perspective of WvW than most players, I have 2 accounts on JQ, one on DH, one on NPS, and another on EU, these were all gifted to me from players who have since left. I choose to move them around so I could try out WvW from different servers views (been on JQ since beta). I can say with certainty that the issues in NA from T1-6 are all different from tier to tier, and the issues in T1 NA are not necessarily the issues of T1 EU. So I still don’t understand how 1 forum specialist is suppose to cover all this info properly, half the issues aren’t even reported on the forums due to anet banning people when they do…..

Again, I wouldn’t be opposed to a second WvW specialist, but Galie could only pick people who actually applied. If you’re that concerned, throw your hat in the ring (assuming you’re a US resident). Worst that happens is that the situation remains as it is now. Otherwise, the situation improves.

And ANet never bans people for bringing up issues. They ban people for being toxic and unconstructive.

As to only one WvW Specialist, did you consider not many qualified applied? Would you rather someone biased was chosen to fulfill the role, just to have more than one WvW Forum Specialist….or prefer to wait until the people qualified for the position apply?

What about all the other sections of the forum? Should we determine all those are being ‘back-burnered’, as well? Some qualified players may not have applied fearing a certain reception on the forums. It is unfortunate some of those fears seemed to have come true.

It seems premature to accuse ArenaNet of snubbing someone’s preferred game mode or forum section(s).

Just want to point out that each profession will also be getting a forum specialist, so not many sub-forums won’t have one. I think that limits it to CDI’s, general discussion, bug reports, and Heart of Thorns that don’t have one, but a Specialist really isn’t suitable for any of those areas.

Please know that we who were listed are not the only ones to be here. More are to come, I do believe I read another WvW might be coming and one for every profession in the game will have one. As Dranmor said, There will be a few sub forums which don’t have one when the program 100% up and running.

Dungeons need their own because the mechanics differ than normal PvE. and then my job is to cover General discussion, lore, and Living Story.

As already stated, it is wise to not let what people say get to you. When people label you as “being better than someone else” people will hate you and troll you. This is something I’ve come very a custom with, and the rest of the forum specialists should as well.

Lastly, as this happen yesterday, please do not feel bad if you wish to message or add me in game. I’d be more than welcome to assist you via whisper or mail.

my request, as you’re looking for class specialist, is please make sure they are not “my way or the highway” type people. it would be very frustration, for hypothetical example, to ask for elementalist advice for landscape PvE, and then only get advice for speedclearing a dungeon, and then be told that any build not designed for speedclearing is trash.

please find specialists that won’t push a particular meta on the rest of us, that won’t belittle us for trying out builds in one game mode that don’t work in another game mode, that won’t mock us for not using accepted min-max builds.

i myself will be less lenient on class specialists. if i ever see one of them say things like “learn 2 play” or “that build is total trash,” i will be reporting them for breaking ToS troll / flame rules. i however, will not be actively seeking out all their posts, as that would take up too much of my time.

i would also add that these class specialists should be able to discuss the pros and cons of skills, traits, combos, builds, in all game modes, and should be able to distinguish the difference between general PvE (landscape), Dungeons and World Bosses, Fractals, Living World and Personal Story, WvW and EotM, and the different PvP modes, (deathmatch, capture point, stronghold), because all of those are essentially different game modes. (and i consider speedclearing to be a different game mode, or should i say playstyle, than dungeons, and soloing dungeons to be different than dungeons.)

for example, if i’m asking for help on a build for general PvE (landscape), i don’t want answers for speedclearing dungeons: i want answers for general PvE (landscape).

my apologies for the overpassionate tone of my post. i’ve had bad experiences on unofficial Guild Wars 1 forums where people flamed anyone who didn’t play exactly the same way they did, and i’d really like these class specialists to be helpful, and not belittling.

Specialist Update

  • We’ve received reports from all of our Forum Specialists, and each report has been forwarded to the developers designated for a particular topic by Colin. In addition, Colin and Izzy (Isaiah Cartwright) will be receiving a copy of each and every report.
  • We’re grateful for the reports and for the depth of detail they provide. We’re very happy that the specialists have volunteered their time to put these together and we believe the information will be very helpful.
  • I sent over a template this week so that the specialists have a consistent framework on which to place their input. The specialists think this system will be very workable and the devs will benefit from the efficiency offered by a standard presentation, although naturally each report will be unique.
  • We’re still seeking specialists for a few professions. Please consider helping out. As the existing specialists will tell you, we don’t place demands on your time or set unrealistic goals.
  • Our specialists were chosen because we feel that they are balanced in their thinking, and that they are keenly aware that they represent a broad cross-section of players. I haven’t seen anything that looks alarming from a “my way or the highway” point of view, Forgotten Legend, and I trust that we’ll see a wide view of a particularly subject (majority and minority opinions, when possible) rather than someone’s individual agenda. That precisely what we’ve gotten so far and this is the ideal of the program.

Who wrote each one should be fairly apparent by the content of the report. For example, if we see a report talking about Living World or Silverwastes, it’s written by Riku.4821.

I know marmatt (the WvW specialsit) has been pretty open thus far about the content of his report. Given what I’ve seen on the posting history of the specialists, the player concerns are being addressed. That said, the best way to make sure yours are is to explain why you feel the way you do on a perceived issue in a civil manner.

Preferably with at least an attempt at grammar and punctuation. That helps a lot in getting noticed as serious feedback. Not a problem for you specifically, but there are a number of posts in these forums where it’s just painful to read and nigh impossible to make sense of.

These reports range from feedback to warnings and personal matter for the developers to see. That said I don’t see a huge importance on the reports being seen, but I feel a weekly or monthly post by Gaile about what has peaked their interests that week/month would work.

But that’s the big Issue. Anet has proven countless times 90% of balances driven decisions are purely related to pvp. Wvw/PVE barely exist in their balance driven decisions. Why bother posting in Dungeon forum that Necro is to weak in dungeons? Won’t happen cause Anet thinks they would be to strong in pvp, and they are to ‘… ’- ’keeps this space empty to not flame’ to make a split between pvp, wvw and pve.

Who says he is having a coverage problem? I know if I were him, I might not post either after the horrid barrage he received simply for being made a specialist. Any lack of post from him, as far as I am concern, was earned 3 fold from the toxic posters who greeted him as they did.
