In the past days I had too much time on my hands, so I made a statistics of posts in this forum. I was curious on the activity trends in the last 3 years, and I imagine the forum activity somewhat resembles the ingame activity as well.
I also added some milestone updates.

The big orange bars are the english forum, the small blue bars are the german forum. The french forum is about as small as the german forum (a bit smaller, in fact), and the spanish forum as about a quarter of the german forum, so it didn’t made any sense to show all of them in the graph.

From the numbers and the trend, I would say 2015 has been a more successful year than 2014, although 2014 was filled with LS2 updates and 2 feature relases, and half of 2015 passed with almost no important gameplay updates until specializations and HoT hit us.

Enjoy

In case you are wondering from where I got the numbers:
Every forum post gets a unique number, one higher than the previous post. Every forum (en, fr, de, es) has its own counter. So I made a small crawler that searched for the last post of each day in each forum, and the number of posts a day is the difference between the numbers of these posts. If you have proof that this is a wrong assumption, I’m happy to correct my analysis.

One last thing:
I never thought there are still a whopping 2000-4000 posts a day in the english forum.

It’s an interesting graph, but I don’t think it’s accurate to say that forum activity mirrors game activity. For me it’s almost the opposite, I’m on the forums most when I’m away from home and unable to log into the game because when I’m home I spend my time playing and only visit the forum to skim topics to see what’s being discussed or to get info on specific things.

So the increased activity in 2015 could be indicative of having less to do in game and more to discuss with the expansion coming up, while in 2014 people spent more of their time playing.

Or it could be that the number of active people has gone up overall. But only Anet knows that and they don’t publish figures.

Forum activity measures, um, people posting on the forum. People post more often when they are upset, looking for help, or interested in exploring alternatives (builds, lore, etc). An unpopular game won’t generate many posts; a popular game will always generate lots of posts. But beyond that, it’s hard to say if it means anything that 2015 had more posts than 2014.

I’m looking at that graph and seeing that post HoT people are less inclined to visit the forums.

This means either, They are in game or they don’t see the point in posting on the forums.

Would be interesting if you could compare these numbers to say….the Guild Wars 2 Reddit and see how much more posting is going on there in the same periods of time to see if one community has grown over the other due to say, neglect.

Game forums have an interesting life span. You can be incredibly interested in a game, but already know “everything” about it and thus have nothing to discuss on forums. For example I love playing Civ4, but there really isn’t much to talk about at this point, 11 years after it came out.

I knew it felt like the forums were abandoned. There were literally 3x as many posts when HoT was released.

Personally I’m a fan of Occams Razor. The simplest explanation is that, yes, forum activity reflects in-game activity, because to arrive at the contrary you have to take some very special and unusual circumstances and extrapolate them to the entire population with little evidence. At least, for purchasing players. F2P doesn’t have forum access, so forum activity becomes less representative of in-game activity at that point.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

The simple explanation is that the sun rotates around the earth served people well for a long time. Occam’s Razor says if there are multiple theories that are equally compelling explanations of the facts, choose the simplest because it’s easier to use. In this case, the competing theories offer different sorts of explanations of the facts.

There’s no question that forum activity correlates with game population. But that’s entirely different from saying they move up and down together.

For example, we got a lot of forum activity when the CDIs were ongoing. That didn’t relate to anything new in the game or anything new about to be in the game. Just a naive look at the graphs above show that there were times when participation peaked outside of major updates, suggesting that forums and the game draw different types of people.

Since ANet doesn’t provide us with the actual numbers about in-game participation, concurrency, etc, it’s really tempting to try to draw conclusions from the sparse details we can see. But, it’s a mistake to rely solely on inferences from one or two merely-correlated data sets. (Although to be fair: you’re in good company doing so — tons of social scientists, economists, and especially politicians stake their careers on doing just that.)

tl;dr the data above is really interesting. However, all it tells us is that forum participation has declined a lot.

Thank you for this post. The graph pretty much mirrors what most of us could already knew, but what the fanatics want to deny. Yeah, that nosedive after Heart of Thorns is pretty drastic, but it also just makes sense.

With nothing to do in game, there’s pretty much nothing to talk about as well.

In this case, the competing theories offer different sorts of explanations of the facts.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. The heliocentric model was adopted because it was simpler. Before, the geocentric model had to come up with a endless series of epicycles to explain the motion of the planets and stars. The heliocentric model didn’t need these epicycles, making it far simpler overall.

There’s no question that forum activity correlates with game population. But that’s entirely different from saying they move up and down together.

Um, no. It is pretty much the same.

For example, we got a lot of forum activity when the CDIs were ongoing. That didn’t relate to anything new in the game or anything new about to be in the game. Just a naive look at the graphs above show that there were times when participation peaked outside of major updates, suggesting that forums and the game draw different types of people.

Where are the CDIs on this graph? And what evidence do you have that the presence of CDI’s didn’t increase player attention as much as it did forum attention?

The forums can only draw people who have both purchased the game and are actively interested in the game. Therefore, the forums and the game can only draw from the same type of people. Yes, not every player goes on to the forums, but as you get a larger gaming population you are going to get a larger forum population, and a shrinking population is going to get a shrinking forum population.

You also need better data interpretation skills. Particularly, the ability to pull the general trend of the graph aside from the spikes. The information of note is the proceeding weeks after any sort of big update, and not just how high of a spike it is in one week.

Since ANet doesn’t provide us with the actual numbers about in-game participation, concurrency, etc, it’s really tempting to try to draw conclusions from the sparse details we can see. tl;dr the data above is really interesting. However, all it tells us is that forum participation has declined a lot.

It’s really not a mistake. It’s common sense. You have to come up with special exceptions to disprove it, and even then you don’t actually have any contrary evidence. The best explanation is that the general forum trends and the general purchased player trends are going in the same direction.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

As do you as well. No analysis has been done to show that there actually is a correlation between forum posts and active players at given times. All that we have seen is the trend in forum posts since launch with various events highlighted. People are using personal observations, which are subjected to bias, on what they perceive the player population trend to be and then matching it against the trend for forum posts.

What they fail to account for are other variables as well. For example, the graph for forum posts is based on number of posts. It does not account for unique posters and yet it’s being used to correlate with player activity. If we get the top 100 posters to post 1,000 messages a day for a month, does that mean the active player population must have increased as well? No, it does not. If Anet does something that upsets the player base, and the forums explodes with 1,000’s upon 1,000 of posts, does that mean the player population increased? No.

You’re drawing conclusions without the full set of data and then making interpretations from that and treating them as facts when they are not. A more accurate comparison would have been with unique posters instead of the number of posts. Even then, we only have half of the data as we have no access to player population numbers.

Here is an update. It includes the forum reaction to LW3.

I am still convinced the forum activity somewhat resembles ingame activity – not exact, but in general – so I hope the upcoming addon has a bigger scope and bigger pre-sale marketing activity than HoT to revitalize the game and bring more new players into our community than players are leaving.

Nice statistics btw

But yeah , i am not so sure too if forum activity/ingame activity , because we had the uproar from the community that wanted the removal of the new WvWvwW map .
And they where …. the 34,6% …. of the ppl who uses or have any interest to go in the forums :P

Or the 3x Devata megathreads in the past , where from the 250 posts in each threads , he made the 55% of the comments and said :
‘’look how many agree with me’’
or
‘’this thread would be dead if ppl werent agreeing with ’’
or
‘’i will comeback and say to the devs ’’I TOLD YOU SO!!!’’’’ (you are not prepered to be a pseudo-prophet like me!!!!)

Or the achentant fiasko at launch with ppl that moaned that they didnt like this Dress up Barbie game and wanted character progression like other games (gear)

Or the Thief megathread at launch with the 350k combined views

It is difficult to explain away such a dramatic drop in forum activity post-HoT without suggesting an overall decline in population, also reflected in the sales numbers. Working under the assumption that HoT was largely a failure, I wonder what the most critical aspects of that failure were?

I lack the pre-HoT perspective, and I could be completely wrong about your average player in this game (a group I am fairly certain I am not a part of!). But I think one of the biggest mistakes may have been not offering the elite spec as baseline.

I think this divided the population with regard to group content specifically. If you don’t have your elite spec, you’re generally less useful in PvP, WvW, dungeons, fractals, and raids (if you could raid without HoT) – basically everything that players do together.

I’m afraid I understand very little about the guild system as it stands or as it existed prior to HoT, but I have heard numerous complaints about the impact of HoT guild changes as well.

I guess my line of thought is that big hits to player ability to enjoy group content together, guilds, and other very social aspects of gameplay are especially detrimental to the overall health of the game. While many players could take or leave the HoT maps themselves, being unable to run with their friends in pre-HoT group content due to these barriers could have been a deal-breaker.

What do you think? This is purely speculation from a fairly new player (signed up at the beginning of this year) still trying to understand the community here. But given that I absolutely love so much of HoT and have a strong preference for it over the earlier content, I would like to see them produce the same sort of quality while simultaneously correcting what went wrong in the first expansion. In order to do that, we need to identify the biggest problem areas.

Yeah, but it looks like forum activity was literally cut in half within 3 months of HoT release (not accounting for the brief post-HoT bump either!). That’s unprecedented according to that graph. Something else would have to have happened during that brief time period to explain this, no?

It may have been too much of a cash grab. The price being too high is a frequent complaint. They may have anticipated that and packed features into HoT as an incentive to purchase that probably should have gone baseline (as explained in my previous post). Again, that’s pure speculation but I’m trying to go off what I hear from players who dislike the expansion.

I hear guilds declined as a result of the changes to the guild system. I hear WvW/PvP declined as a result of elite specs (players not having access to them dropped out) and maps/mechanics that weren’t well-received, generally.

The maps themselves were not universally well-received either, with players who find the maps tedious due to the combat and the layouts often expressing their frustration with having to “grind” HoT. Grinding core Tyria wasn’t a problem for them because they apparently enjoyed those maps. Thus no “grind”. HoT further forces the issue with masteries that are required to some extent for storyline completion (bounce mushrooms and updrafts should have been baseline via the storyline!).

Actually it looks to me like forum activity began to decline after a year and by June 2014 posting volume was about 50% of a year before. LS2 and HoT bumped activity up a bit but it never reached the levels of the first year.

This is not unusual, a lot of MMO players are not that heavily invested in a single game and the subless business model encourages players to wander and come back when something grabs their attention. So it’s not so much “HoT drove everyone away” as “the shiny wore off and after finishing the content on one or two characters most players drift away to other games and come back for a week or two when something new is added.”

Of course, forum activity by itself doesn’t tell us much about who is playing the game because it’s driven by a relative handful of deeply invested (sometimes non-)players who devote a lot of time to discussing the game. If you love or hate the game more than most, you read the forums a lot. If you don’t have strong feelings you don’t have much reason to come here if you don’t have a question or a problem. And most players who join or leave the game do so without announcing it to the forums.

A better graph would be to use total unique posters rather than total posts since people are using it to compare against player population.

Maybe when it declines sharply after a release, it means posters become players for some time. /shrug

2014 looks very similar to 2016. You got an increase in 2015 with HoT then back again.

Other thing that this numbers doesn’t account for are cases like myself, I used to post a lot here in the forums but now I post more on reddit, my interest in the game is the same, my post volume is almost the same but in that graph I’m part of the people that “left”.

Charter Vanguard [CV] – HoD
Bardy Belzebuson – Ranger Sir Belzebu – Herald
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

People moving over to Reddit to post is a good point. I know of a number of people who used to post a lot on this forum who, for various reasons, now mainly or only post over there. Not only is posting more relaxed but devs will actually speak directly to you. The number of one to one dev responses on this forum are much smaller than that one and when you combine the more relaxed atmosphere, Reddit is the forum that people go to to speak frankly to each other and to the devs.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Here is another update. 2016 was not a good year for Guild Wars 2, at least not for his forum. The players went hot on HoT, but lost interest quickly and thoroughly the year that followed.

To be fair “Dev” ( using it to encompass all red posts) posts are less frequent here nowadays then they are on reddit/twitter/FB. In that regard many posters have moved over to where they think they will be heard.

53608 posters active in the last year. That’s a very interesting statistic, well all of them are but this one is more important imo. Is it possible to make a graph with active posters, instead of a graph with number of posts?

Well I see it as HoT polarizing the player base and a segment simply walked away. P4F players can’t post in the forum so we don’t see any new people trying out the game until they buy a copy of HoT.
