Free promoting = bad
I don’t think promoting a product is bad in and of itself. However constant discounts and what some might call dubious decisions as of late ( I’m looking at you glowey T3 armor) are what I think are adding to peoples trepidation about the game. Well and that commercial. Painful. Couldn’t even watch it all the way through.
You’re a gentleman and a scholar, thank you.
I followed the link in the OP, did they really reference “The New Colossus”?
Ummm, NO! Even when we studied that sonnet in high school, I didn’t agree. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” No, they can stay where they are.

Free promoting isn’t bad, but ANet organizing this likely means people aren’t promoting the game enough on their own.

Disagree, but it’s fine to agree to disagree. Personally what drew me to GW1 (and subsequently GW2) was their business model. I have never paid a sub-based game, nor do I think I ever will. Just a rip-off, for the most part, though I respect anyone who prefers to do differently, as it’s their money and free will to do so.
No biggie for those 5,000 free game winners, I am sure many of them will spend money eventually. I myself am on tight budget, and rarely spend on the gem store (nothing is really needed) so much would I be able to afford a subscription fee that I honestly feel is unnecessary or at the very least excessive. I don’t think this free promotion will “hurt” the game one bit, and can only help find some new players that will keep playing for years to come.
The video is cheesy, but remember that people are different, and like/are enticed by different things. I myself would take notice if all I did was being enslaved to a fee I can no longer afford.

If they are promoting because we aren’t convincing enough of our friends to play then that’s a very bad thing. You hardly ever see big promos for mmos unless they are putting out a big expansion or just came out.
Doing this a year and a half after launch and when they have no plans for an expansion doesn’t sound good.

If they put out better content I’d invite both my brothers to play. But as it is right now I’m not sure I’m even going to stick around.
Nothing wrong with promoting your product. I don’t begrudge Anet that at all. My problem with the video itself is the video itself. How poorly done it is. Not only is the concept bad but it was poorly executed. I can’t imagine any audience that promo would appeal to.

Half my mmo playing friend stopped playing long ago for various reasons and the rest probably couldn’t be swayed by me because I really don’t know how much I can talk about the game before my criticism starts to leak in.
“Ya, wvw is awesome. I mean, I have to sometimes wait 3+ hours to play and the lag can be pretty awful. But, ya, pretty cool!”
Its like cash cab but for Guild Wars
Any game you pledge “allegiance” to is an unhealthy sign of fanboy(/girl)ism.
A company promoting this kind of behavior is appalling.

Not really, because it is all in the spirit of fun. However, I do not think that F2P is automatically the best model for an MMO. So I think that part of it is a little silly.
Just because something is “in the spirit of fun” doesn’t make it healthy or something that will promote a greater good. The Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs acted in the spirit of fun, you know.

That’s precisely why in this world some people are better than others. People who like or who are drawn to things that I do not like are not worthy of having their opinion respected (and the same goes for them).
Tolerance is nothing more than the amount of poison you can consume before you die.
How is this relevant to the topic? You are trolling me in particular.

Report and move on. Also, edit your post so you don’t provoke an argument and derail the thread.
Wouldn’t you say that he/she is being the provocative one? I will edit, though I do not revoke any of my words, for I stand for what I stated, and forever will.

I assume he already did, so did I. But I don’t think he’s the one who provoked an argument and derailed the thread, you got the wrong person.
I feel that it seems pathetic and desperate.

I didn’t mean to offend, but responding to trolls just encourages them. It’s better just to report and ignore them. Hence why I asked you to edit your post.
