I like to play around with different armor configurations, and sometimes things don’t look quite the way I want them to in the preview window (due to lighting effects, animations, etc).

I was thinking, wouldn’t it be nice to have gear that’s under level 80 be free to transmute? At this point, no one is transmuting armor unless it’s gear they’ll be using in the long run (level 80 rares or higher). I think it would be nice to have a set of sub-optimal gear that I can use to play with armor styles.

It doesn’t even have to be level 79 and under gear. Level 60 or even level 40 gear with free transmutes would be sufficient for experimenting.

Complete a city map 6 times and you can transmute a whole set.
Rata Sum and The Grove takes about 15 mins each to complete.

I doubt we’ll ever get free transmutations, but back before the feature patch we could transmute our lower level gear at what has turned out to be 1/3 of what it costs now (using Anet’s 3 transmutation stones for 1 transmutation charge exchange rate). So now I almost never will transmute any of my early on gear to anything other than the skins that are free (heritage, etc).

So what I’d like to see is perhaps some kind of transmutation option for lower level gear that is more inline with what it used to cost.

Yes, but back before the feature patch it would have only taken 2 completions for below 80 lvl gear!

Yes, but then at lvl 80 you had to buy from gem store and all the tons of transmutations you have would be useless.
Current system makes transmutation below lvl 80 a bit harder than before and at lvl 80 WAY easier, sounds like an ok deal.

Since the yellow T stones used to be so easy to get, most people did have free transmutations below level 80. I certainly never paid for a transmutation below that level. I think it would be nice if they made transmutations free for pre level 80s. This would essentially return the game to what it was before the wardrobe.

Another possible option, a gem store item that allows unlimited transmutations for a set period of time.

Believe it or not I’ve been transmuting armor for my non-80 alts pretty regularly. I typically do armor upgrades at 20, 35, 60, and then of course 80. I transmute at each of those stages. I happened to have 100+ charges so it never bothered me, and I still have 60 or so remaining.

But I’m sure I’m the exception to the majority. I would much rather not have to use charges on non-80 gear, but I want my characters to look awesome from the get-go. Once my level 80s have their “look” I rarely change it. Maybe one piece randomly if something better comes along, but that’s 1 charge once in a blue moon.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

I’m not apposed to them somehow lowering the transmutation costs for sub-LVL 80 gear, but with the current system, I’m not sure how they could do it (short of FREE).

Maybe a transmutation charge for less than 80 Chest and Leg armor and Free for the other 4 pieces?

To be honest, this only effects me if I want to change my key farming gear as I have no lower than 80 characters left.

Well, part of it is that I want to see what the armors look like in the real world instead of just the preview window. The problem I keep running into is the armor looks great in the preview window, but looks kind of off after transmutation because of lighting effects and junk.

I just want a way to see what a lot of armor looks like in the world instead of just the preview window.

All they had to do was create a Mystic Forge recipe to turn 3x transmutation stones into 1x fine transmutation stone, then everyone would have been happy.

I have to agree I used to transume my stuff a lot on alts (I had tons of yellow trans stones) but now I don’t. While I don’t think FREE would go over well at ANet corporate, how about 1 transumtation charge for a full set of under 80 gear? That seems a lot more reasonable that 6, but you still need to use a charge. If it were like that my alts wouldn’t look so darn … unimpressive.

They could even tier it so level 19 and under uses 1 charge, 20-39 level uses 2, 40-59 uses 3, 60-79 uses 4, then you need one for each piece at level 80. What do you guys think of that?

Wasted in the sense that as you level up the practicality of keeping that level 19 armor decreases. You absolutely wouldn’t want to keep wearing it at level 29, so if you still want to keep that look, then you must transmute again.

I personally solve the problem by looking like a patched together hobo on any non-80 character. This of course defeats the purpose of having a wardrobe system at all.

What would be nice IMO is a limitless transmutation charge, similar to the gathering tools. I can’t see myself more than very rarely buying/using a set of transmutations at the gem store. I could however see the value of spending a larger amount to never need to keep track of them again.

If it is your 1st toon then you won’t have many skins to change till lvl 80, also you get a charge for every city you complete and a big chance to get when finishing any other map.

If you are leveling an alt, then you probably have tons of tomes of knowledge and t-charges, you don’t need to change the skin of your alt every 5~10 levels.

I have 8 lvl 80’s, most of my alts I bought the lvl 30 cultural and kept till lvl 80 transmuting every 10~15 levels (my male ele and thief was exception, the HoM set looks too good and doesn’t require t-stones ) and still I had almost a stack of transmutation stones before the update, even if the changes of getting a charge is 1/10 of used to be it is still very easy to keep changing your skins.

You do still have to pay to transmute at level 80.
I don’t have any issues with the current system, since all of my characters are already 80, but I can see how it could affect lower levels.
In the other hand, new players will probably be ignorant to the fact that things used to be different, so they won’t care.

Yes I know, but before the update BLC and buy from TP was the only options to get t-crystal to transmute lvl 80 gear, now you just need to do 1 city map to a guaranteed t-charge, so now it is way easier (easier =/= free).

I’m both ways when it comes to this.

On one hand, my low level characters looked better before because I had a bunch of transmutation stones that I had no use for otherwise, so I felt more free to experiment with different looks. That said, I had no use for those stones because on they reached level cap, they were useless, they are not now.

Charges are MUCH easier to get by these days, a city completion gets you one when previously you would get just a stone (which became useless at 80) and the only realistic way to get the crystals was using the gem store.

That said, I’m rather happy I played GW1 and got the heritage set unlocked so if I don’t like the skins I’m getting at a particular level, I’ll just use that instead..

locoman, the only thing I don’t agree with is that you did not get “one” yellow stone on map completion before the wardrobe system. You got 3. So effectively it is exactly the same, yet it isn’t because now you basically use THREE yellow charges for one change on a character, regardless of level.

Nope, I am not changing looks on any characters until I have maxed out their armor. Will not be wasting charges on something I’ll have to re-transmute after an hour or two of play. So, has ANet actually achieved anything useful with the wardrobe? Not as much as one might have thought when it was first announced.

The system was easy and already in place. All they have to do is maintain the ratio of 3 stone = 1 crystal. But make is 1 stone = 1 charge like it should have been and give use 3 charges for map completion. That way people can blow charges left and right for sub 80 gear, but when they do level 80 gear it costs 3 charges, eating up the excess charges faster.

The reason they didn’t do this, though, is because they wanted to make a bunch of cash for gem store sales on charges. It’s an annoyance, but it’s all we’re ever going to get. If you want more charges you get one charge for every map you complete. So complete all the maps on all your characters and you’ll get your charges.

Actually, we used to get three stones on city completions so as you did these you could amass quite a number of stones useful for alts. As others have said, that encouraged transmuting the armor of your alts prior to them reaching level 80 to try different ‘looks’. Now days I only (sometimes) transmute my alts to the various Heritage skins gotten from the Hall of Monuments as those transmutations are free.

this would be cool for levelling, other games have things like a skin slot, were skins are separate from armour so you can switch gear and keep the same look.
but a simple way to transmog gear lv 70 and under would work too
