Q:

Why is the Gift of Battle vendor no longer available – instead we are forced FORCED to go into WvW in PvP area and go through a mess when before we could simply purchase Gift of Battle with badges of honor. This is not fair taking it away; obviously there is a preference for PvP to the point of forcing players into it. Get the vendor back, this isn’t asking for something new – this is asking for what was available to be returned. Not everyone is a PvP’r, we just want to make our legendary and play PvE where we are comfortable.

You’ll get a response of “WvWers have to do PvE a lot to make legendaries” in 3… 2… 1… Heck, you’ll probably get it while I’m typing this. And they do have a point tbh.

The good thing is, you don’t really have to do that much to finish a reward track. I just basically did some of the easy dailies and got the rest by escorting dolyaks from one place to another for what seemed like an eternity (probably around 6 hours in total). Terribly boring and at no point did it serve the purpose of making me interested in WvW, but it really wasn’t that bad. I only got attacked once or twice, just let them kill me and moved on. Item repair is free. /shrugs

EDIT: Oh yeah, I got yelled at for not fighting back once by someone who cared way too much about winning whatever our glorious server has been fighting for. I just blocked them.

It will not be returned to the vendor

You’re intended to do multiple things for a legendary. Saving Badges of Honor from achievement chests is not legendary. The vendor may not have been removed had badges not been awarded in AP chests, but that damage has been done.

You know, i went exactly through the same process, i was kittened that i couldn’t get the Gift of Battle through spvp because i find WvW to be tedious at best….until i got it in one evening of play and i had a great time in the process. I joined a squad that proved to be made of great players, we conquered most of EB and we never got defeated. It was a squad, but we were able to shatter zerg after zerg. They came at us 26 times, and 26 times they failed. In the end, i got what i wanted relatively quickly compared to most of the time gated content out there, and i had a wonderful time in a game mode that never really piqued my interest. I made friends too. I’m not saying i will WvWvW all day now but i will definitely hop in from time to time. Give it a shot with an open mind, things could change quite quickly. In any case, i wish you the best of luck in your chase of the Gift, hang in there!

Get some boosters and you are done in 6-7-8hours top. Try to complete as many dailies as possible and consume the potions. A full track is roughly 75 of those.

I agree. I came back to the game after a couple years of being gone recently. Working on Sharur. I’m just curious whether or not the EotM maps work for it. Those I used to find moderately enjoyable when you ran with a zerg. The Normal wvw maps though? I HATE fighting other players. I’ve tried it numerous times and never once found it enjoyable. On the contrary, it’s tedious and stressful.

Isn’t the legendary supposed to be a long term goal? Besides, 8 hours really is not that big a deal, just follow the zerg if nothing else.

And yes, Edge of the Mists works too, but you get less base points per tick for your WvW reward track.

Guys, i don’t know why are you defending or justify this change.

Previously we could buy a gift for 500 badges, which were dropped easily.

Now we have to go through a track, for at least 7 hours of playing.
And also, the introduction of tracks for wvw is not going to be a choice, because the gift will be the main goal for most of us ( and also, not knowing if we’ll craft a legendary item in the future, will always be the best choice so far ).

That said, i doubt they are gonna change the way we can acquire a gift of battle, but still what is your problem in thinking that “have to play” 8 hours “a specific content with a specific track” is better than getting the item almost instantly while you can do what you want?

Really sometimes i find myself speechless while i read threads.

Anet: now for the chain event you are going to do will take 6 hours instead 1.

Group A: Why do we have to farm that more?

Group B: It is right because it is normal that if you want to save a City from an army you can’t do this in only 1 hour. 6 hours is fine, and if you are with a good group you will only need 5.

/facepalm

It’s been like this for AGES now; The fact you didn’t know this up to this point, shows your inability to keep up to date (Unless you’ve been away – But that is what a search is also for)

It doesn’t take long at all to get the GoB .. Jump in and do 2-3 dailies and over time you are done..You don’t even need to zerg if you don’t want to.
Start GoB when you first start your legendary and you’ll get it done before you get everything else (Yes, this would require people to research every part of the legendary before they start – shocking)

We are heroes. This is what we do!

got mine in 5 hours of roaming in Wvw this weekend, its not that bad honestly. max boosters + killing everything you come across + taking keeps towers when a zerg would siege one. The amount of WvW rank you can gain in a day is incredible, and it can be fun, which i wasnt expecting.

People (PvE folks, at least) aren’t saying that it is better, just that it’s not as bad as it seems at a first glance. In other words, most non-WvW people don’t like this change, but it’s not something to get bent out of shape about.

Just do it spread over a few days. You don’t need to spend 8 consecutive hours to finish the Gift of Battle reward track. You don’t even need to follow a squad that may or may not be in one of your matchup’s maps (though I would recommend it as it can be quite fun to partake in the large scale battles of this game too — a death doesn’t cost you a dime; repairs are free and so are the Waypoints). You can go around flipping camps, killing Dolyaks, capturing ruins, taking out sentry posts and the likes. There’s plenty of Gold to be earned in WvW as well, so there’s that too.

They didn’t say it’s “better”, nobody does. You’re twisting people’s words to make a blatantly false statement. The only people supporting this change are a few hardcore WvW purists who feel that “turnabout is fair play” because they had previously been forced in a similar situation. Now PvE folks suffer like they used to. That is all there is to it. Kindly stop twisting people’s words for your personal agenda.

As a non wvwer and non pvper, i supported this change. Legendaries should involve leaving ones comfort zone and spreading the content across as many modes as are accessible. Ive had to do fractals, jumping puzzles and achievements i would normally avoid, as well as wvw and before tokens were cheap, pvp as well.

500 badges still required doing wvw anyway. We also have edge of the mists which is just a train of capping pve camps to help. Alongside dailies, there are enough options to avoid the worst of wvw if you want to. Sure it is a bit longer, but in the grand scheme of making a legendary, it is a blip.

Look at it from a wvw and pvp point of view. Those guys have to leave wvw to play pve for legendary weapons, more than we have to join wvw for ours.

Use WvW reward track booster from guild hall and the XP booster, so you get 316 every five minutes on Tier 6. It takes about 8 hours to do so. No big deal. I usually do that in 2-3 sessions.

I’ve never really gone for all of them ‘cause I’m lazy and in no hurry for gifts… but that’s good to know. The ease of the dailys does depend a bit on how well your server is doing. For example, if they’re doing really well, they take longer to complete as you have to run across the whole map just to find a flag for Land Claimer.

I currently have over 200 WvW potions sitting around waiting to be spammed.

Indeed. I personally enjoy both WvW and map completion (at least HoT anyway) so it makes no difference to me. But it does seem like there are so many entitled purist pvers that demand to get gift of battle without any effort whilst purist wvwers have to still do map completion (either HoT or central tyria) which takes a hell of a lot longer to do than GoB, and is arguably more tedious.

It’s 6-8 hrs without boosters, with Boosters it’s between 3-4 hrs to complete.

Also there is a way to get the GoB without ever doing any WvW besides going into Spawn and purchasing an item for WvW Big Spender it’s Called Karmic and Ley Line Converters.

So either do 3-8 hrs of WvW or due the Converter method that requires zero WvW.

It was a mistake a GoB only require 500 batches after wvw was removed from map completion. Then they have tried to add a wvw rank restriction but it was not successful as 14 wvw rank is very easy to obtain. Finally they’ve made wvw teward track….

I still remember my first legendary required to map wvw as well for the GoE, where i was strictly pve only. It took me 4 months to finally take that final poi at the borderland north west tower where it was almost always under enemy control. I got killed countless of time when i travel to the tower whenever it was avaible. I missed that poi until that borderland finally became my home bl.

It is more frustrating than that merely couple hrs of reward track, epecially one can finish without walking outside of spawn.

The history is more complex than people have been saying. It’s true originally we could buy the gift of battle with badges of honor, But it’s also true that originally we had to complete all 4 WvW zones as part of world complete, which depending on your server could sometimes take months.

Back then badges of honor didn’t come in achievement point chests, so we had to get them by playing It’s a pretty good bet you’d have needed 8 hours of playing in WvW to get a legendary when the game launched. Achievement point rewards like badges and not having to do map completion in those zones changed the landscape.

It’s not any harder now than it was at launch.

Agreed, I’d say it was much easier now. I remember working towards my first legendary. It took me a long time to get those 500 badges and you really had time it right to ensure you could cap things like enemy borderlands and stonemist castle (at which point you’d try and relog as many toons as poss before it was recapped).

The WvW players who argue that they have to do PvE when crafting legendary weapons, and therefore, the way of obtaining the Gift of Battle is just fair, forget that PvP and PvE are not equal game modes that stand next to each other.

PvP is an addition to PvE. Basically every player starts in PvE, and then, if he likes, he can do PvP (I mean WvW here, but it’s player vs. player). Very few players start playing an MMO game immediately in PvP, and stay there all of the time. In a Venn diagram, the circle that represents PvP players would be in a bigger circle of PvE players and only a tiny area of it outside of the PvE circle.

Most WvW players have no problem playing PvE, and GW2 is mainly a PvE game. Sorry, but those game modes are not equal. Just because you have to do PvE to get a legendary weapon, it doesn’t mean it’s fair for PvE players to have to do PvP. There are lots of players who hate PvP, and will not participate. It’s usually the most toxic environment of games. At least you cannot exchange messages with players from other servers, but the map chat is enough to get the picture.

I’ve played PvP in the games I played before I started GW2, starting 17 years ago with Unreal Tournament and Quake (at that time, not every other player met your mom). I have no problem doing PvP in GW2, I just find WvW boring, just as you guys find PvE boring. But I respect that many people have good reasons to stay far away from PvP, and they will not be able to get a legendary weapon. Not because they are not willing to put the work or grind in, other parts of the legendary journey require that, but simply because for them, it’s not just “play a bit PvP”, it means getting ganked in a toxic environment where the locals don’t even want them in their game.

It would be the best for every party, WvW and PvE players to remove that item from the quest or make it available through other means. As far as I can tell, WvW players are not happy with PvE players filling server spots and having no clue what to do. You say just kill dolyaks or capture camps that are protected by NPCs. If half of the server population did that, how would you fill your blob? Best thing for a WvW server would be if only dedicated WvW players filled the available spots, not noobs like me who show up with a Berserker Daredevil using double pistol and PvE traits.

I was going to comment on how it’s actually quite easy to get the gift of battle and how in the grand scheme of crafting a legendary, it’s like a drop in the pond that’s hardly worth fretting over, but I also do agree with Faaris’ point to some degree.

At the end of the day, PvE players playing WvW just to get certain items they need for their legendary can seem like an inconvenience to both PvE and WvW players. I do understand why it was done in the past, because legendary weapons were essentially not just a cosmetic item, but also a symbol of your mastery over all game content (you needed to do world completion, dungeons and other game modes to get everything you needed), but now that we have mode specific legendaries like the new legendary back items that show your mastery of PvP or WvW respectively, I think that’s less of a necessity now.

In the end, it wouldn’t bother me if it remained as is, because it’s not really a train smash, but I also wouldn’t disagree with the idea of not needing to play WvW in order to get an item that is not specifically tied to that game mode.

I admit I will be able to support one of these, as as soon as ANet granted a way to spend WvW currencies to unlock hearts. I think PoIs and such should still need to be done, but hearts should be like HPs, some way to convert one currencies to the other. The time it takes to acquire the gift of battle pales when compared to completing all the hearts on the map. Not I admit I say this as a PvXer.

Yeah, it sucks, OP, but there are things you can do to minimize the pain.

Use your WvW boosters. Celebration boosters and others can give you XP which might lead to reward chests. Get the guild hall bonus for reward tracks.

Follow a commander. Find a flag, zip to the closest waypoint, and find ’em. Problem is, commanders are very flighty, and when threatened or intensely bored, they will disappear, often appearing back at a castle or other spawn.

Play “just enough” Don’t go for short sessions with just doing a daily or two. You won’t get much participation, and it’ll make the whole thing seem longer. But also don’t waste time if you’re not getting participation. Retreat to some PvE when things get obnoxious (#1 server rolling your team again, commander not communicating, etc).

I got four gifts of battle recently through the reward track. Three of them I got by spending time in WvW following a commander and making sure to do dailies. The fourth GoB and four completed tracks for the legacy armor were gained by just doing dailies and/or just spending about 1/2 hour a day running around in WvW with a zerg big or small.

WvW is not my thing. I’m mainly a PvE player, but I am learning to appreciate WvW a lot more and I actually let myself enjoy it when I am in there. It feels like it takes a lot less time if you resolve to enjoy the WvW play.

I think it was a mistake to remove the vendors. However, no amount of whining has changed Anets mind on this yet (keep at it though, the mapping requirement in WvW was removed because of the perpetual whining).

I say that as primarily a wvw player. Let the thing be bought with badges and let the people who don’t get how awesome WvW can be, leave with their little trinket.

WvW was not removed from map completion due to player complaints.

It was removed because they decided to cycle the borderlands maps and that likely was causing issues with map completion on their end, not to mention locking new players out of map completion until ANet decided to start cycling the maps.

That it fell in line with what the PvE only people were asking for was pure coincidence.

BS They removed it long before there was a map rotation. They removed it because of the complaints. They should never have had it, but lets not kid ourselves. They reacted to excessive consumer complaints as any other vendor would. No need to make excuses for them.

It was removed right before HoT’s launch when they had announced that the WvW maps were going to be swapped out and eventually rotate.

Considering ANet’s done things that make it so players have to actually play WvW to get the legendary, I really highly doubt they made a decision that would mean players did not have to play WvW. So I’m not making excuses. I’m looking at the evidence and making a ruling.

It was removed 7 months prior to HoTs launch date though, i wouldnt exactly say thats right before HoT launch date.

March of 2015 for the removal of WVW map completion as part of world completion, October of 2015 for HoT launch date. While the new maps may have a played a part in it, im sure that people constantly nagging anet about it being removed as part of total map completion also played just as much a part in their decision, because otherwise they could have kept the maps as part of it and continued to make people wait to map them as they did prior.

Ooops on the time, I thought the announcement on WvW maps had happened a lot closer to HoT’s launch than that. But given that anything added for WvW wasn’t dependent on getting HoT, it could have things launch prior.

I highly doubt it was just as much if any part. It goes against the other moves regarding WvW that ANet has done.

I think a large part of it was they couldn’t figure out how to keep the inactive WvW maps counting towards map completion or proactively keeping support/bug tickets down from people going: I’ve got everything mapped and I can’t see where I’ve missed anything, when what they’re missing is the hidden WvW maps.

Now the timing of the removal being prior to the WvW maps being rotated out may have been influenced by the complaining, but I highly doubt it was any part of the reason why it was removed.

Another part of it may have been that more and more servers like mine didnt have a WvW population making it really difficult to get certain areas mapped. On my server you would go into WvW and wed have maybe one or two camps, maximum because nobody did WvW, it was awful. On top of that you needed to be decently lucky with the(if i remember right) random color rotation they had set up to get the areas you needed if your server couldnt take them through playing.

Regardless, i think its a good thing they removed it from being needed for world exploration. I just dont agree that they need to make the GoB available through a merchant again(and theyve stated they wont either) you can still get it without playing WvW, just takes longer…

Now if only i had something to spend these tokens on..
