GW2 PVE lacks: WvW Zerg amount of mobs
There were many events like this in the past. They were mostly nerfed into the ground as they were easy to farm. Now they are shells of what they used to be. Reduced number of mobs per players, but increased difficulty significantly of the remaining mobs. This meant you had to work as hard or harder for less loot rolls to the RNG gods. Then time was greatly increased on most of these events so they wouldn’t be profitable to farm in regards to gold per hour. Pent/Shet/Jofast used to be a great example of this. It’s still decent farming compared to the events left in the game, but they used to have tons of mobs.
It’s not unusual to see the centaur attacks in gendarran fields, and elsewhere, overwhelm low level players. There are similar attacks all over the game. They aren’t as challenging for a fully geared 80 obviously.

It’s not the amount of mobs but the downtime in events, the time between they could happen again, that killed Pen/Shelt/Jofast.
Infact if anything, there are more mobs since the April ’13 patch, when they overhauled many risen skills and events in Orr, allowing for elites and champions to spawn.
Combine less frequent events with harder to kill mobs, and you have less player interest.
For the toast!
