Hello there, I haven’t played GW2 for over a year now and was wondering what the population was like at the moment.

I’m currently downloading the game again as we speak however would just like some clarification on how active World PVP is etc.

Thank you!

The Megaserver has solved any and all population problems that existed a year ago.

MORE than enough people to make your PC lag no matter what specs!

Yep. No population issues apparent to players, if not counting for the sometimes too high population on a map when the daily asks you to do 4 dynamic events on that particular map.

We obviously don’t know how the overall population of the game is, but it appears to be healthy.

For WvW you should choose your realm more carefully though, as WvW does not utilize megaservers (except for Edge of the Mists).

If by World PvP, you mean WvW, it’s quite active in Tier 1 servers. No idea what server you were on. There are plenty of people playing the game.

Yeah active to the point of constant queues for prime time. I like T2-T3 much more because of no queues, but never having to look long for a fight. Just perfect.

Well I know some (a lot?) of people go to WvW for PvE or map completion, but I would like to believe most (or at least some) are there to do actual PvP

If you prefer lower populations, the game sucks now. They’ve been doing everything in their power to cram each zone full of people tripping all over each other. Megaserver. Specific zones and even specific bosses to kill for Dailies. Hope you don’t have claustrophobia.

This is exactly what Megaserver was designed to do. Hide the real population numbers.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

Source?

Because there are other reasons to have a mega server other than that.

In WoW, the most successful MMORPG of all time, on many servers, mid level zones are dead. People complained about this for years.

Anet said that they didn’t want to add new zones to the game and further divide the player base on each server without having the megaserver in place.

There were always plenty of people at world events, certainly on my server. In Iron Marches…not so much.

The megaserver means there is continuous traffic in the hotspots although when I went to mapping with my lowbies (gritting my teeth and suffering the recent downdates) players were few and far between. I played both UK and US times over Christmas, late nights aplenty. No doubt this will get argued away that I was in a server that was new because the other was full?

Anet said that they didn’t want to add new zones to the game and further divide the player base on each server without having the megaserver in place.

What does that mean? They want to keep fps low at world bosses or there aren’t enough players to go round?

Neither.

W/o megaservers, adding new zones for eg not only means you dilute the playerbase across more zones, but also more aspects of that zone too. eg, maguuma adds say 4 more zones – all you ended up with in the old system was was multiple versions of the new zone and prob very few close to being full. Now you only new versions of the zone, when one fills up. Less dispersal in other words.
