GW2 Wants to be a PvP game but isn't..(?)
( I’m not saying that you should eat Lego… )
its a pvx game,
but most balance issues are aimed at pvp.
so yes your alone in it
Does anyone else feel like they tried to make GW2 a PvP game with all skills and traits working towards short burst functions with long cd’s and a lot of counter cc? Personally I feel like the game wants to be PvP but really isn’t which makes some awkward game play
Nope. You are assuming all PvE games must be as bad as classic MMOs are, which is not true. GW1 had the same “issue” – players saw the low level cap and thought it was a feature for PvP, while in fact it was one of the most important PvE features in the game. Those players had simply been conditioned by classic MMOs to expect something else.
treadmill, of being in that obvious pattern of every time I catch up you are going to
put another carrot in front of me” – Mike O’Brien right before Ascended weapons
Alright but I’m not really talking about level cap / meaning of level at all here. I mean the way they built the skills and traits, they feel like they belong in a PvP environment where burst and movement is key whereas PvE demands durability and sustainability.
Also I’m not sure what you mean with classic MMO’s and how they are bad? :S
I think anet is really trying to get this game to be an esports, at least the spvp side. I am okay with that but I don’t think they should force it. Example in another game: PlanetSide 2 developers just signed a contract with MLG to try and get that game popular in the esports world. This is going to fail horribly because PS2 isn’t set up as an esports game, let alone a tactical game that requires thinking. I am fine with GW2 spvp trying to be an esport but don’t force it. It will come if it has the potential.
But to your other points, there is a low amount of weapons skills in the game because it is just easier to balance that way and of course there is a counter to everything, so that may be why you are thinking that. But yeah the end-game is set up to be pvp so it makes sense it is a major focus of combat.

I don’t understand why Anet is making this so hard on themselves.
The only thing they need to make this game an e sport is an ingame ladder, featuring detailed warzone statistic.
The moment that thing is up you can bet your kitten every one will be competing like crazy trying to top the ladder for “the highest damage dealt per match”.
An ingame ladder. Honestly it really is that simple.

I think they are doing that. I remember one of the developers said during the twitch live stream that they are working on leaderboards and ladders, competitive stuff like that to facilitate esports.

PvE is very much about movement. Generally, the ideas that work in pvp in this game tend to work in pve as well. PvE mobs must obey the same rules we do. So if you restrict a mob’s movement, that mob can’t get to you to hit you. If you put up a reflection against a ranged mob then it will nullify that mob’s damage. If you blind a veteran before a big attack then the attack will miss. If you don’t move out of the way of a big slam move then you’ll pay the price.
As for sustainability, I am not sure what isn’t sustainable. Everything is as sustainable as it’s cooldown. The removal of a mana pool makes most everything sustainable except elites. You don’t stick in one place hitting your biggest attack over and over because that’s not the way combat works in pve or pvp. You move, counter, and hit.
I never joined this game for PvP. I would never take PvP in an MMO seriously.

If Anet is trying to turn the game into an esport, it’s missing many, many, many features.
MMO’s are not the best types of games for pvp. ArenaNet may try to get this to be an e-sport or even have some decent pvp but they have a lot of work ahead of them in part due to it being an mmo.
OP whats your profession? so i can take alook at the traits and see what are “sustainable”
I don’t see how anyone can take pvp in this game seriously with something like downed state. Who would want to watch it?
ITT GW2 fanboys who can’t see how kitten PvP is in Guild Wars 2.
Yes, GW2 has one of the most awkward PvP in an MMO I’ve played. The PvP in this game is either kill someone in 2 seconds, or survive longer than 2 seconds so as to be a distraction so that someone else can kill someone in 2 seconds. There’s no such thing as “sustain” in GW2 pvp since “sustain” means you’ll last an extra few seconds.
Not to mention the Anet devs failed completely at PvP modes.
sPvP is boring, noone wants to level up AGAIN just to get cooler looking armor when you’ve already got it all in PvE
Zerg v Zerg, I mean World v World speaks for itself.
