In order of popularity (in my opinion):
PvE, WvW, JP (Jumping Puzzles) and PVP

WvW and PvE switches places regularly.

PvE is too broad a term. I’d argue that a lot of people PvP but don’t do dungeons at all. Dungeons and fractals are really their own separate thing. I know people who only want to run dungeons/fractals and could care less about the open world and vice versa.

I think your definition of “a lot” differs greatly with my definition.

I seriously doubt there are people who only do open-world PvE without doing dungeons and vice versa.

I would say it could be true. Some people hate dungeons, but do pve content, farming, events every day.

There has been loads of polls on % of players who play PvE & PvP & WvW, they all fairly consistantly show :

PvE only 40%
WvW only 30%
PvP only 10%
2 out of 3 or 3 out of 3 20%

Also the low PvP figure reflects my experience of other games with PvP in them, its always 10% to 20% of the player population who mainly do it, but they are a very vocal minority…its why games developers find it hard to justify spending loads of game resources on it.

My answer for GW2, would be introduce more PvE rewards for PvP and you will get more people doing PvP.

Perhaps one of the reasons more people do WvW is you can kit your character out in exotic armour/weapons which you can use in PvE?

10 laurels is a lot of laurels. Even if the laurel “bug” was to be made a perma-feature, I doubt it will entice people to grind away at PvP. Personally after many matches during beta and initial launch, I find it to be even less satisfying than harvesting or crafting. If I want to PvP, I would prefer FPS or a hack and slash like War of the Roses: Kingmaker.

WvW is another matter altogether, it can be quite exciting. However there needs to be more rewards, objectives and variation imho.

I wasn’t really trying to be funny when I mentioned JP. It seems that JPs are quite popular (Not really my thing, but idc doesnt affect me in the slightest) and devs have dedicated imo the appropriate resources towards it, so much so it can be considered a feature. I bet a lot of JP fans still miss the Clock Tower and Wintersday JPs and would probably still run them.

However if you are going for a MMORPG and end up with JPs as part of the architecture, you might want to consider that organic changes have occurred.

I started playing a couple of weeks after launch. I don’t PVP and never went into a dungeon.

As for offering PVE-focused rewards for PVP, that just kittens off the vocal minority who enjoy PVP because PVE players are usually pretty bad at it. It’s best when the only motivation to PVP is PVP.

Eventually you will go into dungeons. Why wouldnt the vocal minority want more PVP noobs to kill? A lot of PVE builds dont work well in PvP and vice versa.

Why do you assume that people will eventually go into dungeons. Do you realize, by percentage, the amount of people who solo MMOs? Probably not, but let me give you a clue.

Scott Hartsman, the lead designer of Rift, said and I’m paraphrasing here) an MMO today only ignores solo players at its own peril. In addition, Guild Wars 2 in their own FAQ had a question about soloing, even when the FAQ was a lot smaller.

Everyone keeps thinking their preferred play style is in the majority, but I know from experience, solo players rarely come to forums and almost never join guilds so how would you know they were out there.

But just looking at this forum, you’d still see plenty of solo posters posting. And many of them will have never entered a dungeon. I have a dozen people in my guild who don’t do dungeons at all, and don’t PvP at all, but love the open world.
